Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combined analytical and experimental investigation of the stability of composite cylindrical shells is presented. Forty-five fiber-glass filament wound cylinders were fabricated, buckled, and analyzed. The number 45 stems from considering three diameters (6 in, 12 in, 24 in), three filament configurations, and five loadings. All cylinders had essentially the same wall thickness, .035 in, and each cylinder length was nearly equal to its diameter. The five loadings were: (1) uniform axial compression, (2) torsion, (3) bending, (4)combined torsion and uniform axial compression, (5) combined bending and uniform axial compression. The analysis was based on linear anisotropic shell theory and the effects of boundary conditions were not considered. Preliminary tests were conducted to determine the in-plane stiffnesses and individual layer elastic properties. The experimental buckling loads were from 67 to 90% of predicted values for loading without torsion. The bending buckling stress was, for all practical purposes, equal to the axial buckling stress and the combined bending with uniform axial load interaction was essentially linear. The experimental torsion buckling loads were greater than the predicted values but the boundary conditions were not considered in the analysis. Buckling loads were computed for boron filament wound cylinders of the same size and winding configurations. These computations show that the buckling loads of boron and aluminum cylinders, of the same size, are nearly equal. A similar comparison on a weight basis would produce the same result since their densities are essentially equal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 8 presents the possibility that what is recognized as lunar cratering was caused by endogenous, volcanic activity rather than by the more widely accepted meteoritic impact mechanism. This book provides an introduction to the technology of rocketry. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of lunar volcanism and the interpretation of the widespread phenomenon of cratering. This text then provides a comprehensive examination of one of the major components of the solid propellant rocket. Other chapters consider the many problems associated with design, construction, and testing of motor cases of the solid propellant rocket. This book presents as well a thorough examination of interplanetary mission planning covering such vital elements as the process of mission decision making based on model theory. The final chapter deals with the exploration of the planet Mars. This book is a valuable resource for geoscientists, astronomers, and geologists.
Book Synopsis Torsional Shear Strength of Filament-wound Glass-epoxy Tubes by : L. David Wall (Jr.)
Download or read book Torsional Shear Strength of Filament-wound Glass-epoxy Tubes written by L. David Wall (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented from torsion tests conducted on 36 multilayered, filament-wound, glass-epoxy tubes. Configurations with helical windings and with alternating helical and circumferential windings were investigated for various winding angles. Under small loadings, shear moduli deduced from linear shear stress-strain curves were found to be in reasonable agreement with analytical predictions. Under larger loadings, various degrees of nonlinearity in shear stress-strain curves were encountered, depending on the helical winding angle. Experimental torsional strengths were defined by a 0.2 -percent offset yield stress or by maximum stress when large nonlinearities did not exist. These strengths were compared with torsional buckling predictions for orthotropic cylinders, and with material strength predictions based on orthotropic yield criteria and elastic stress analysis. Computed elastic buckling stresses were considerably higher than the experimental strengths for most of the test specimens except for those with only 30° and 45 [degree] windings. Experimental torsional strengths- were found to correlate with conventional yield predictions if predicted yielding in certain layers were ignored or if unrealistically large transverse tensile and shear strengths of unidirectional laminae were employed in the analysis.

Download or read book Flexible Pipes written by Qiang Bai and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the most well-respected teams of scientists in the area of pipelines, this revolutionary approach offers the engineer working in the energy industry the theory, analysis, and practical applications for applying new materials and modeling to the design and effective use of flexible pipes. Recent changes in the codes for building pipelines has led to a boom in the production of new materials that can be used in flexible pipes. With the use of polymers, steel, and other new materials and variations on existing materials, the construction and, therefore, the installation and operation of flexible pipes is changing and being improved upon all over the world. The authors of this work have written numerous books and papers on these subjects and are some of the most influential authors on flexible pipes in the world, contributing much of the literature on this subject to the industry. This new volume is a presentation of some of the most cutting-edge technological advances in technical publishing. This is the most comprehensive and in-depth book on this subject, covering not just the various materials and their aspects that make them different, but every process that goes into their installation, operation, and design. The thirty-six chapters, divided up into four different parts, have had not just the authors of this text but literally dozens of other engineers who are some of the world's leading scientists in this area contribute to the work. This is the future of pipelines, and it is an important breakthrough. A must-have for the veteran engineer and student alike, this volume is an important new advancement in the energy industry, a strong link in the chain of the world's energy production.

Book Synopsis Effect of Fiber Orientation on Initial Postbuckling Behavior and Imperfection Sensitivity of Composite Cylindrical Shells by : N. S. Khot
Download or read book Effect of Fiber Orientation on Initial Postbuckling Behavior and Imperfection Sensitivity of Composite Cylindrical Shells written by N. S. Khot and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koiter's approach is used to formulate the influence of fiber orientation on the behavior of the cylindrical shell in the initial postbuckling region. Results are presented for three-layer composite cylindrical shells of either glass-epoxy or boron-epoxy subjected to uniform axial compressive load. The results show that the initial postbuckling coefficient that characterizes the extent of imperfection sensitivity of a structure is greater for the glass-epoxy shells than for the boron- epoxy shells. For the glass-epoxy cylinders the slope of the load vs. end-shortening curve in the initial postbuckling region is found to have high negative value, which is not significantly affected by the change in fiber orientation. This suggests that the buckling of a nearly perfect glass-epoxy cylinder under prescribed end-shortening will be catastrophic, regardless of fiber orientation. However, for the boron-epoxy cylinders the negative slope varies with the change in fiber orientation, and whether the failure will be catastrophic or not will depend on the fiber orientation.
