Les sollicitations sont exposées dans un cadre déterministe et stochastique. Pour ce dernier, le cas de variétés de configuration euclidienne ou riemannienne est abordé. La difficulté réside dans le type d’équations différentielles non linéaires particulières utilisées. Le cadre théorique ainsi que des schémas numériques sont détaillés pour chaque équation. Trois types de problèmes sont d’abord étudiés dans le cas particulier d’un solide à un degré de liberté : la force de frottement, la loi d’impact en déterministe et le frottement dans un cadre stochastique. Ensuite, de nombreux exemples sont commentés et fournissent, dans un cadre théorique ou applicatif, de nombreux modèles accompagnés de leurs schémas numériques. Des rappels théoriques fondamentaux sont proposés ainsi que deux preuves complètes de convergence de schémas numériques dans le cas du frottement déterministe ou stochastique.

The author emphasizes the various points of view (combinatorial, differential, and algebraic) and is interested in the description of its smooth points, symplectic structure, volume and connected components. He also shows how a three manifold bounded by the surface leaves a trace in this character variety. These notes were originally designed for students with only elementary knowledge of differential geometry and topology. In the first chapters, the author does not focus on the details of the differential geometric constructions and refers to classical textbooks, while in the more advanced chapters proofs occasionally are provided only for special cases where they convey the flavor of the general arguments. These notes might also be used by researchers entering this fast expanding field as motivation for further studies. The concluding paragraph of every chapter provides suggestions for further research.

This meeting is part of a series of seve ral other interdisciplinary conferences such as Elmau 1972, London 1974, Dortmund 1976, Elmau 1977, Tokyo 1978. The old science classification scheme proposed by Auguste Comte tends to be eve ry day a bit more blurred out: one gives here, if needed, one additional illustra tion of this trend. The three key words "far from equilibrium", "instabilities" and "structures" best illustrate the new concepts which emerge from the description of the dynamics of various systems relevant to many different research areas. Laser emission, chemical reactions, fluid motions, exhibit very particular phenomena when, under appropriate external action,they occur far from equilibrium. These proceedings include the experimental description of such phenomena as well as theoretical at tempts in understanding them. Most of the topics investigated here belong to the domains of physics and chemistry but one should be careful not to underestimate the underlying potential biological interest. If the study of simple systems (e. g. , described by a few variables) has been qui te successful for several centuries, the recent bearing of our attention on complex systems constitutes a genuine epistemological breakthrough bridging the gap which used to exist between the sciences and the humanism.
