"It was God, my dear little boy. Don't you remember the psalm we read in the synagogue last week: 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the mountains, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord who made the heavens and the earth'? God made the Taurus Mountains on the west of our dear city and He made those peaks of the Amanus you see off there in the East, over which the storks fly in the autumn, and He made this wonderful river, the Cydnus, which dashes through the cleft in the mountains and makes those great waterfalls which you love and which rushes headlong through the city on its way to the blue sea."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostle Paul was the first great missionary, pastor, and the theologian of the early Christian church, and today we recognize that St. Paul's contributions to Christianity make him the most important biblical figure in the New Testament next to only Jesus Christ and God. Yet how much do we truly know about this resilient, strong-willed man of faith? How did this man, once a devout Jew and zealous Pharisee, come to never lose sight of his mission to spread the new theology that would later be known as Christianity? In St. Paul the Apostle, author Irving Brittle Jr. uses resources from more than one hundred academics, theologians, and researchers to sow a basic, concise biographical and historical portrait of St. Paul the apostle. He touches on Paul's life within the Roman Empire and his time as a "zealot Pharisee" before the transformational encounter on the road to Damascus, where Paul first had his life-changing vision and dialogue with Jesus Christ. St. Paul the Apostle also covers Paul's three missions through Asia Minor, Eastern Europe, and Rome, and it introduces the cast of companions who accompanied Paul while he spread the Gospel of Christ. Even though we may not know the exact time of his martyrdom at the hands of Hero, Paul can rest assured his Gospel of Jesus Christ and his thirteen epistles are still the cornerstone of mainstream Christianity today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul, Hero and Saint: An Apostolic Story of Roman Battles and Catholic Victories Some great men bear a message to a few. Of their own land or of their own time. Others live on from age to age in the minds of a select number who choose a Sphere in life like to that of their inspirer. But there are also great men who, in their appeal, partake of the character of universality: they speak to many of their own day and they speak likewise to many of all times. Of this last type, beyond all doubt, is St. Paul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born to wealth, adventuresome in spirit, shrewd in business, gallant in war, and a beau ideal of his class, Tommy Hitchcock was the epitome of the American hero, a legend even in his own time. To Scott Fitzgerald, Tommy embodied the ideal of the aristocratic man of action, basing two of his characters loosely on Tommy. Tommy joined the Lafayette Escadrille during WWI at the age of 17. He was shot down, captured by the Germans, and then made a dramatic escape to Switzerland. Within a few years after the war, he had become one of the stars of the “Golden Age of Sport.” In the 20s and 30s, Tommy dominated polo more decisively than Bobby Jones did golf or Babe Ruth did baseball. Settling in New York with his growing family, he became an investment banker and threw famous parties in Great Neck, Long Island, which attracted the rich and famous as well as celebrities such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Always impecunious, the Fitzgeralds were easy to attract to a lavish party, but not so easy to convince to leave. When America entered WWII, Tommy re-entered the service, but was told he was “too old” for combat flying. He became the biggest booster of the new P-51, then in development, becoming instrumental in convincing the Army to build it to protect Flying Fortresses on their bombing raids over Germany. We were losing hundreds of the heavy bombers to Luftwaffe Messerschmitt’s because we didn’t have a fighter that could reach Germany with the bombers. The P-51 was a game-changer. Hermann Goering, commander of the Luftwaffe, told his American interrogators after the war that when he saw P-51s flying unopposed in the skies over Berlin, he knew the gig was up and Germany would lose the war. Tragically, on April 18, 1944, Tommy died test-flying one of the new P-51s in England. He will forever be an American hero.
