Book Synopsis Suffolk Returns from the Census of Religious Worship of 1851 by : T. C. B. Timmins
Download or read book Suffolk Returns from the Census of Religious Worship of 1851 written by T. C. B. Timmins and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Census returns provide a detailed information about patterns of religious life in 19c Suffolk, revealing much about both orthodox Anglicanism and Dissent. The reader is in John Clare's world... Every county should publish its Census and see that it is done as excellently as that for Suffolk. RONALD BLYTHE, CHURCH TIMES The census returns edited in this volume provide a unique sample of mid nineteenth-century religious life. They are printed in calendared form, and their findings set in local and national context; information about land and property ownership is supplied, making it possible to compare patterns of ownership in most parishes with the presence or absence of Dissent. Chapel dates are collated with those in meeting-house certificates and printed notices, while much detail refused by Anglican clergymen is recovered, together with communicant numbers and/or information about the frequency of Holy Communion. The appendices present the evidence about places of worship omitted, and contain facsimiles of the census forms. T.C.B. TIMMINS has prepared editions of two volumes of church registers: of John Chandler, Dean of Salisbury, 1404-17, and John Waltham, Bishop of Salisbury, 1388-1395.

Download or read book Agincourt written by Stephen Cooper and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overwhelming victory of Henry V's English army at Agincourt in October 1415 has passed into myth _ as one of the defining events of the Hundred Years War against France, as a feat of arms outshining the previous famous English victories at Cr_cy and Poitiers, and as a milestone in English medieval history. This epic story of how an exhausted, outnumbered army, commanded by an inspirational leader, crushed a huge French force on French soil has given rise to legends and misconceptions that make it difficult for us to reach a clear understanding of what really happened on the battlefield 600 years ago. But that is what Stephen Cooper attempts in this thoroughgoing, perceptive and fascinating reconstruction and reassessment of the battle and its history. In graphic detail he describes the battle itself and the military expedition that led to it. He examines the causes of the conflict and the controversies associated with it, and traces how the story of the battle has been told over the centuries, by eyewitnesses and chroniclers and by the historians of the present day.??As featured in the Yorkshire Post, The Star (Sheffield) and Rotherham Advertiser.

Book excerpt: Unsurpassed in the years since its first publication in 1917, English Church Woodwork is the definitive guide to the ornate craftsmanship of the Gothic period. FH Crossley spent over twenty years recording, measuring and photographing churches across England and Wales: from his archive of over 10,000 pictures, the 380 reproduced here show the finest examples. Accompanied throughout by FE Howard's clear and authoritative text, the survey includes rood screens, misericords, quire stalls, pulpits, lecterns, doorways and font covers, highlighting both the incredible levels of skill and fascinating regional variations in the woodwork. English Church Woodwork is both ambitiously wide in scope and satisfyingly comprehensive: a fitting tribute to what is arguably the finest legacy of the medieval ages.

Download or read book John Kirby's Suffolk written by and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facsimiles of four rare mid-eighteenth-century maps of Suffolk, and early roadbook from the same period. Here, published in facsimile for the first time since the eighteenth century, are John Kirby's extremely rare large-scale Suffolk maps of 1736 and 1737 and the 1735 edition of his road-book The Suffolk Traveller, the earliest single-county roadbook. Those who subscribed for the 1736 map received the 1735 Traveller gratis. The maps of 1764 and 1766 which his sons published after his death are also provided, the former decorated with twelve engravings of castles and abbeys in the county. The earliest maps were the result of a survey of the whole county which Kirby carried out, with some help from Nathaniel Bacon, between 1732 and 1734. Although it is easy to pointto inaccuracies, the hand-coloured maps are highly decorative and correct many of the errors common on earlier Suffolk maps in county atlases. The heraldry on the one-inch maps and the named owners and occupiers of the larger estates provide the basis for new select directories of the county in the mid 1730s and mid-1760s. This work of Suffolk topography includes a biography of John Kirby himself and a full account of the travails of publishing his maps and book. Contributions by JENNY JAMES.
