Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Contributor(s): John Bertram Phillips (1906-1982) was a Bible translator, writer, and clergyman. His work translating the New Testament made him one of Britain's most famous Bible communicators. He talked of the revelation received as he translated the New Testament, describing it as ""extraordinarily alive""--unlike any experience he had had with non-scriptural ancient texts. He referred to Scripture speaking to his condition in an ""uncanny way."" Phillips was a masterful apologist and defender of the Christian faith. He upheld the basic tenets of the faith, and was able to present them as fresh to the modern reader and hearer, much as he had done with his translation of the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scraps of information about St. Luke scattered in the New Testament forms the basis for the fictive life of the author of the Third Gospel and the book, Acts of the Apostles. Although fervid in his belief, The New Way that was later on called Christianity in the year A.D. 40, Lukes whole life was mainly sustained by his calling as a beloved physician. To the very end of his life, Luke remained an active practitioner of medicine. His training in this art, where case histories had to be recorded for each patient probably gave him that polished edge to write with great style. What little is known about Luke comes from his association with St. Paul who was also responsible for baptizing the doctor. By joining Pauls missionary journeys Luke was able to travel through the cities of Asia Minor, and the northern and southern regions of Greece. The climax of his travels with Paul was a trip to Jerusalem accompanied by other Greek disciples. Here in this sacred city Luke received from the apostles the commission to write the early history of The New Way. Of course, he also undertook writing the Third Gospel.

Excerpt: ...evil men then living on earth, or, as it would seem, above all the wicked souls which from the beginning of the world had cursed it by their lives, he thought of himself as the chief. Yet he was but a Jew, with only the Old Testament to enlighten his conscience and touch his heart He knew about the personal spirit of evil, the enemy of God and of his own soul, and he knew that he had consented to the temptation of the adversary in the very presence of his Maker and his Lord. But a Christian understands much more than this concerning the malice of sin. He knows that his offences were so many blows at the love of God which had come in the Person of Jesus Christ to seek him out and to save him. Our Lord may justly complain of each one of us: "Mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of My Bread, hath lifted up his heel against Me." Not for our condemnation, however, does He by the lips of the psalmist speak this tender reproach. He desires to awaken in us life-long penitence, that so He may insure our eternal salvation. This thought has been quite wonderfully expressed for us by a modern poet: "Once, staggering blindly on the brink of hell, Above the everlasting fire-flood's awful roar, God threw His heart before my feet, And, stumbling o'er that obstacle divine, I into Heaven fell." But St Luke has something still more wonderful to tell us about habitual penitence. He relates that when our Lord rode into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday, the multitude cried out: "Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest" Through the Messiah, man is reconciled to God, and this brings to Heaven itself greater glory and a deeper peace. Shall I not, then, ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke's carefully researched and orderly account of the life of Christ is one of the finest pieces of historical writing from the ancient world. More importantly, it boldly proclaims the story and significance of Jesus, emphasizing his "gospel" as good news for the whole world. In this illuminating commentary, respected pastor R. Kent Hughes explores Luke's historical claims about the life of Christ and his overarching message, offering helpful insights into the biblical text and pastoral reflections on how it applies to everyday life. Written to help preachers and Bible teachers communicate God's Word more effectively, this commentary explores how the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus constitute the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and guarantee salvation to all who believe on his name. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Harrington. What truly sets this book apart is the way in which Harrington effectively bridges the gap between modern biblical scholarship and Christian spirituality. In addition to a brief but complete narrative analysis of the Gospel of Luke and essential background information on the Evangelist himself, this book includes suggestions for ways we might "pray" Luke's Gospel and live out its transforming message in our daily lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The perfect Christmas gift for anyone interested in the historical background behind the birth of Jesus of Nazareth." — Robert J. Hutchinson, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible, The Dawn of Christianity, and Searching for Jesus. "Utterly refreshing and encouraging." — Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Martin Luther "The best book I know about the Magi." — Sir Colin John Humphreys, Ph.D., author of The Mystery of the Last Supper Modern biblical scholars tend to dismiss the Christmas story of the “wise men from the East” as pious legend. Matthew’s gospel offers few details, but imaginative Christians filled out the story early on, giving us the three kings guided by a magical star who join the adoring shepherds in every Christmas crèche. For many scholars, then, there is no reason to take the gospel story seriously. But are they right? Are the wise men no more than a poetic fancy? In an astonishing feat of detective work, Dwight Longenecker makes a powerful case that the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem really happened. Piecing together the evidence from biblical studies, history, archeology, and astronomy, he goes further, uncovering where they came from, why they came, and what might have happened to them after eluding the murderous King Herod. In the process, he provides a new and fascinating view of the time and place in which Jesus Christ chose to enter the world. The evidence is clear and compelling. The mysterious Magi from the East were in all likelihood astrologers and counselors from the court of the Nabatean king at Petra, where the Hebrew messianic prophecies were well known. The “star” that inspired their journey was a particular planetary alignment—confirmed by computer models—that in the astrological lore of the time portended the birth of a Jewish king. The visitors whose arrival troubled Herod “and all Jerusalem with him” may not have been the turbaned oriental kings of the Christmas carol, but they were real, and by demonstrating that the wise men were no fairy tale, Mystery of the Magi demands a new level of respect for the historical claims of the gospel.
