Book excerpt: First platted as Park Resort and later Harrison, Panama City received its current designation in 1909. More than 100 years ago, men of vision recognized the attractiveness and potential of this land along the shores of St. Andrews Bay, and those visionaries established a city that is now anticipating its centennial year. A local newspaper once reported that such men "saw that nature had dealt kindly with that section of the country and that with properly directed effort a great future awaited it." Others claimed the area was "nothing but a wilderness." Today nature's kindness to those who reside on these shores is apparent. This volume pays tribute to the city by recognizing the places, events, and, most importantly, the individuals who have inspired its success.

Book excerpt: The town of Millville, Florida, was born out of the need for lumber to build houses and ships in the late 1800s, when settlers coming to St. Andrews Bay had no way to travel but by sailing vessels. Millville had a sawmill, a shipyard, and several stores. In the winter of 1885-1886, several families organized a Sunday school. They built a small schoolhouse, and the newly formed Watson's Bayou Literary Society met. By 1910, it was the largest community around the bay and the center of commerce and industry for the area. In 1913, leaders incorporated the town, and voters elected W.I. Singletary their first mayor. The future was bright. By 1918, 2,000 residents lived in the town ith hotels, a theater, 31 business establishments, and several churches. Millville was still the largest town on St. Andrews Bay, but just to the west was the growing town of Panama City. In 1926, Millville was annexed into the incorporated limits of Panama City.

Along the way, it was integral to the grand plans for some well known business empires and set a few historical precedents before maturing into a prosperous if somewhat obscure short line. This latest edition includes added and expanded information throughout.

Book excerpt: Greer Hennessy is a struggling movie location scout. Her last location shoot ended in disaster when a film crew destroyed property on an avocado grove. And Greer ended up with the blame. Now Greer has been given one more chance—a shot at finding the perfect undiscovered beach town for a big budget movie. She zeroes in on a sleepy Florida panhandle town. There's one motel, a marina, a long stretch of pristine beach and an old fishing pier with a community casino—which will be perfect for the film's climax—when the bad guys blow it up in an all-out assault on the townspeople. Greer slips into town and is ecstatic to find the last unspoilt patch of the Florida gulf coast. She takes a room at the only motel in town, and starts working her charm. However, she finds a formidable obstacle in the town mayor, Eben Thinadeaux. Eben is a born-again environmentalist who's seen huge damage done to the town by a huge paper company. The bay has only recently been re-born, a fishing industry has sprung up, and Eben has no intention of letting anybody screw with his town again. The only problem is that he finds Greer way too attractive for his own good, and knows that her motivation is in direct conflict with his. Will true love find a foothold in this small beach town before it's too late and disaster strikes? Told with Mary Kay Andrews inimitable wit and charm, the New York Times bestseller Beach Town is this year's summer beach read!

If golf novels had a leaderboard, Miracle at St. Andrews would be at the top. Though nobody has ever identified a single secret—no universally accepted truth—to the sport, every real player searches for one. Travis McKinley is one such seeker. A former professional golfer who feels like he's an amateur at the rest of life, he makes a pilgrimage to the mythical greens at St. Andrews. On the course where golf was born, every link, hole, fairway—even the gorse—feels like sacred ground. Ground that can help an ordinary player, an ordinary man, achieve a higher plane.

Book excerpt: Discover the haunted history of this Florida Gulf Coast city with tales of battles, murders, natural disasters and the restless spirits they left behind. Located on the coast of Florida’s panhandle, Panama City offers plenty of charm, fun and sun. But it also has a dramatic past that still lingers among its old buildings and historic landmarks. Staff at the City Center for the Arts can still hear the footsteps of inmates pacing the cells of the Old County Jail that once occupied the grounds, and a phantom known as Virginia still frequents the elevators of the historic Bay County Courthouse. Not all spirits bring doom and gloom, however—one local family learned how to befriend the resident ghost of their new home that was fond of whistling at night. Using extensive research and interviews, author Beverly Nield details the ghastly history of haunted Panama City.

Book excerpt: Pull up a lounge chair and have a cocktail at Sunset Beach – it comes with a twist. Drue Campbell’s life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried – to Drue’s eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job. It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance – her grandparents’ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions. With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her father’s firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may – or may not – involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: there’s a storm on the horizon. Sunset Beach is a compelling ride, full of Mary Kay Andrews' signature wit, heart, and charm.

Book excerpt: The Glenwood Community has been referred to at varying times by sundry groups as "The Quarters," as "East End," as "Shine Town," and some extremely negative designations. It has existed since the nineteen-twenties; and it has a noble history, with an incredible record of perseverance and buoyancy. Like Bay County, it has been populated by people from several areas of the country; however, the turpentine, fish, and sawmill industries as well as tourism and stevedoring initiatives impacted the growth of the population. All of the aforementioned represented sources of livelihood for some of the early settlers. There was an innate desire by many of these pioneers to become independent and mimic the free enterprise system so common to this country by becoming entrepreneur. Their efforts showed an unusual amount of wisdom in that each business enterprise focused on the needs of a people in a segregated society of unequal financial opportunity.
