Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Golden Age, the philosophical discussion on the nature of Brahman or the Ultimate Consciousness was dominated by the three Acharyas - Sri Sankaracharya (circa 788-820 C.E), who propounded Advaita or radical monoism, Sri Ramanujacharya (1017-1137 C.E) who was the foremost proponent of Vishishtadwaita or Qualified-monoism, and Sri Madhavacharya (circa 1238-1317 C.E), proponent of Dwaita, Dualism. It is our good fortune that we are able to celebrate the one thousandth birth anniversary of the second of these great Acharyas, Sri Ramanuja. This Volume of Essays written by Srivaishnava scholars and practitioners from India and the USA is our modest effort to acquaint the Life and Legacy of Sri Ramanuja. The Essays in the Volume are divided in two parts. Part I contains five essays by Dr. Prema Nandakumar, a renowned scholar who has the unique ability to explain complicated topics in simple and elegant prose. The five essays together give a complete view of Sri Ramanuja's accomplishments. Her essays include a critique of his principal writings, his pursuit of Ubhaya Vedanta which skilfully combined the ancient Sanskrit texts and Tamil devotional hymns of the Alwars to enhance the religious fervor of the Srivaishnava devotees, his vision and management ability which led to the creation of a superb organizational structure which helped to sustain the growth of Srivaishnavism; and above all, how his teachings influenced the spread of bhakti movements all over India and abroad. The Essays in Part II are intended for those who want a deeper understanding of specific aspects of Sri Ramanuja's teachings. V. Sadagopan gives a detailed timeline of important occurrences in Sri Ramanuja's life. Tirumanjanam Sundararajan's essay contains an account of the interpretational differences between Sri Ramanuja and his teacher Yadava Prakasa. The short paper by M.G.Prasad and the relatively longer discussion by Madhavakkannan help the readers to understand Gadya Thrayam, the three pieces of Prose which are of great appeal to common persons who follow Srivaishnavism. Part II also includes an Essay by Krishna Kashyap which discusses the main tenets of Vishishtadwaita Vedanta.

Book excerpt: Rare and blessed is the occasion when a saint, an illumined soul, Swami Ramakrishnananda, a direct-disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, undertakes the task of writing a biography of an Acharya, a world-teacher, Sri Ramanuja. No writer, however erudite and accomplished, can bring to his work that revealing insight which a saint does by virtue of his illumination. From this point of view, the biography of Sri Ramanuja in Bengali, authored by Swami Ramakrishnananda, is a unique work. Whether one belongs to the ranks of orthodox followers or to those of the heterodox, going through the pages of this book, one would surely feel the devotional fervour the author had for Sri Ramanuja. The book was translated into English by Swami Buddhananda, Interspersed with more than 150 colour photographs, annotated with many additional notes, and additional material appended, this new edition of the book, brought out to commemorate Sri Ramanuja’s 1000th Birth Year, will surely communicate the transforming power of the great life of a mighty and magnanimous world-teacher written by an illustrious apostle of another great world-teacher.

We are constantly in pursuit of that joy which has eluded us forever, thus far. When we realize our true nature and origin, it enables our progression towards attaining a happy and fearless state in life. Each one of us is a divine Soul; unborn, unchanging, immutable and eternal; an inseparable potency of that Supreme God, who dwells in us eternally. Though each one of us has the potential to experience a divine existence, being immortals, we have chosen to take birth in this mortal world; taking birth to die and dying to take birth again, in some 8.4 million bodies. There is a mismatch in what is happening to us. We are immortals, but the bodies we acquire in this world are not. We can attain the divine, eternal world of God, if we realize our imperishable relationship with God, who alone can grant us the state we all seek. With that realization, we can transcend causes and effects of this karmic world, overcoming grief and pain. We not only achieve material success, but also live a useful life, for the self, for our families and for the society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian philosophy was more decisively established with the Upanishads, the first of which may have been written in the 7th century BC. Early Upanishads, which dominate the late ancient period of thought, were key to the emergence of several classical philosophies. In the Upanishads, views about Brahman and atman were proposed. Buddhism, now a major world religion, also appeared in the ancient period of Indian philosophy. The Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, lived during the 6th century BC. Religious, or spiritual, metaphysics, a field that currently receives little attention among philosophers in academia in the West, considers the question of the nature of a Supreme Being and its relation to the world. Indian Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, and theistic Vedanta all have contributed to this debate. Within spiritual metaphysics, an insistence on spiritual monism is probably the most important consideration that Indian thought upholds, though with numerous variations: Much Buddhist philosophy promotes the idea of the interdependence of everything; theistic Vedanta finds no gap between the world and God; and Advaita Vedanta insists that everyone’s true self is nothing other than Brahman, the Absolute. This book presents information on some of the basic concepts of this subject. Contents: • Zoroastrianism • Judaism • Christianity • Islam • Tribal Religions of India • Phenomenology • Vedanta Philosophy • Maya: Nature and Arguments

Book excerpt: This book is less about Sri Vaishnavism as a creed and far more about a modern Sri Vaishnava’s outlook on life. Understanding the ancient Indian spiritual and religious tradition of Sri Vaishnavism can never be complete without some acquaintance with its scriptural literature that is found written mostly in the Sanskrit and native vernacular. In India today, English-educated modern youth, as well as young Indian communities at large in the global diaspora, lacking mastery in either language, completely miss out being able to appreciate and experience life, and the world itself, in the many rare, brilliant and quite “unusual” ways in which their distant ancestors saw it all and recorded their experiences too as scriptural insight. This book is a collection of 18 delightful essays in truly felicitous English, each one of which enables and then vividly brings to life for readers a deep and fresh understanding of the ancestral verities of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhakti Schools of Vedānta’, of which this volume is a part, is a work intended to bring to the notice of the general reader that it is not correct to equate Vedānta exclusively with Advaita Vedānta, associated with Śrī Śaṅkarācārya. There are several other Ācāryas who have expounded the Vedānta in quite a different way and whose status as teachers of Vedānta requires recognition. The personages treated in the above book are Sri Rāmānuja, Śrī Nimbārka, Śrī Vallabha, Śrī Madhva and Śrī Caitanya. Besides their theo-philosophies, detailed accounts of their lives are given. For it is the support of their lives that gives more authority to their teachings than the philosophical writings of mere armchair philosophers. The frame-work of their lives is mainly historical, but most of the miraculous and extraordinary incidents mentioned in them may largely be projections of the pious imaginations of their followers. These too are to be respectfully received and not pooh-poohed as mere cock and bull stories. It is the way of the Indian mind to convey the idea that these Ācāryas are endowed with extraordinary powers. But for this, their teachings could not have survived through so many centuries influencing the lives of innumerable generations of men.

For too long, taboos and restrictions have made the lay person, the ordinary individual and the uninitiated seeker slightly wary of this potent talisman that has been left for our benefit by the ancient rishis of India. In the pages of this book, Rev. Dada JP Vaswani demystifies mantras of their abstraction and esoteric aspects and brings them closer to us for our use. He has chosen to share with you some of his own favourite mantras, with his characteristically lucid and eloquent expositions on the significance of each. Also included in the book are answers to questions on the use of mantras and their effects. His wisdom, his insights and his profound scholarship are freely offered to us, so that we may move onward, forward, Godward! J P Vaswani needs no introduction to readers of inspirational literature. He is regarded as one of the leading spiritual luminaries of India, a practical philosopher and a man of God whose grace has influenced thousands all over the world. A gifted writer and brilliant orator, Dada, as he is lovingly called, has addressed distinguished audiences worldwide, communicating only as he can, the positive messages of love, faith, joy and peace. Book excerpt: Over the course of seven days, Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda captivated an eager audience with his commentary on the Shreemad Bhagavatam, extracting the essence of its message and deepening the understanding and experience of everyone present. This book is the result of that event. About the Shreemad Bhagavatam: Despite being compiled long ago by Sage Veda Vyasa, the Shreemad Bhagavatam’s message is very relevant today for it describes the powerful connection to the Divine presence that resides within the heart of every human being. Its verses prove that whenever humanity is most in need, the Divine manifests Itself on Earth to answer the call of the sincere devotees, and to re-establish balance, right action, and the life-affirming power of Divine Love. Paramahamsa Vishwananda’s commentary gives an enlightening spiritual context to these stories of men and women, kings and beggars, avatars and demons, and seamlessly connects them to the deeper issues and questions that concern all of us today: life purpose, responsibility, honesty, jealousy, pride, ego, stewardship of the Earth, and much more.

Book excerpt: The Sri Guru Gita is a discussion between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, in which Parvati asks Shiva, "Who do you consider the greatest one on Earth?" While the complete Sri Guru Gita is 400 verses long, this book contains the in-depth commentary of Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda on what He considers the most important 182 verses of this scripture, which is focused entirely on praises that show us how to open up the heart to receive Divine Grace. Sanskrit verses and translations are included in this selection. Paramahamsa Vishwananda says, "The Sri Guru Gita is one of the most wonderful songs which shows us that everything happens only through the Grace of the Guru." Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda is a fully realised spiritual Master, whose international mission, known as Bhakti Marga, 'the path of devotion', is based in the heart of Europe. He travels the world to encourage all people to recognise the universal Love that lies within each human being, and to awaken their innate ability to express that Love in daily life.
