Download or read book Electoral Politics in Sri Lanka written by S. Keethaponcalan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines and analyses electoral politics in Sri Lanka through the theoretical framework of manipulation. The following questions guided the study: how do political actors manipulate elections, and what are the salient features of electoral politics in Sri Lanka? Primary and secondary data formed the basis of the analysis, examining eight presidential elections. The research findings indicated that Sri Lankan governments, political parties and political leaders have taken advantage of six types of electoral manipulation, including constitutional tinkering, field fixing, time fixing, vote suppression, process manipulation and resource manipulation. Through a close examination of eight presidential elections, research carried out for the volume found that elections are often associated with violence; presidential elections are mainly a majoritarian affair in which minority communities play only a marginal role; there is a significant gender imbalance, as women’s participation in the electoral process is very limited; despite the presence of a large number of candidates contesting the election, it always remains a two-way race; and amid extensive manipulation and other problems, voter participation tends to be high. This volume will be a valuable resource for students, academics and researchers who focus on democracy, good governance, electoral studies and South Asian politics and history, and will enhance the conceptual foundation of democracy advocates and activists.

Book Synopsis Constitutional Law and the Politics of Ethnic Accommodation by : Bashir Mobasher
Download or read book Constitutional Law and the Politics of Ethnic Accommodation written by Bashir Mobasher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores whether the legal and political institutions of Afghanistan were able to incorporate diverse ethnic groups into the political process. Ethnic accommodation has gained central stage in the literature on institutional design and democratic consolidation. However, some divided societies are more explored than others, and Afghanistan is one understudied country that is critically important for testing and improving our theories of institutional design in a democratizing, plural society. This work examines the Constitution of 2004 and those provisions of electoral laws and political party laws that together devised Afghan political institutions including those of the presidential system, unitary government, electoral systems as well as the party system. It argues that due to their incongruence in design and effects, the Afghan political institutions failed to fully accommodate ethnic groups in the political process. This book adopts a holistic approach, while also paying careful attention to the details of each of the individual pieces of political institutions designed by the Constitution of 2004. Taken together, this approach yields insights into the boundaries and interactions of institutional design and how their interactions hinder or advance ethnic accommodation in varying contexts. The book will be essential reading for academics, researchers and policy makers interested in constitutional law and politics.

This book was released on with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor George Derwent Thompson (1903 - 1987) of England pioneered the method of reading Greek classical literature in Marxist approaches. His book "Aeschylus and Athens" in 1941 and "Marxism and Poetry" in 1945 received international attention. He was a member of the Communist Party of England and left the party after the Chinese Revolution due to differences of opinion. However, he continued to write various books enriching Marxism. He was close to the people until the very end. The rise of China today is the basis of his predictions. Professor K. Kailasapathy is a student of George Thompson. While studying for his Ph.D., Thomson was the master of ceremonies. Following his style, K. Kailasapathy submitted a study on the heroic poetry of the Tamils under the title ‘Tamil Heroic Poetry’. Oxford University published it in 1968. Comrade KAS was an enthusiastic nurturer of the method of studying traditional literature from a Marxist perspective.Comrade KAS can be said to be like George Thompson of Sri Lanka. They both deal with their confidence as they choose to embark on their play activities. Some within the party have struggled to advance the debate on it. Today their struggle is proving to be the right one. Those who stood in front of them have all but disappeared. The commemorative committee is delighted to announce the release of this memorial book in honor of the late General Secretary of Sri Lanka Communist Party (Left), K.A. Subramaniam, on the first month commemoration of his passing. These are just a few short snippets that commemorate comrade KAS. But these pages show that the deep and meaningful ideas and assessments contained within are not mere lip service or formal phrases usually awarded to a deceased person.
Book Synopsis Understanding Elections through Statistics by : Ole J. Forsberg
Download or read book Understanding Elections through Statistics written by Ole J. Forsberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections are random events. From individuals deciding whether to vote, to individuals deciding who to vote for, to election authorities deciding what to count, the outcomes of competitive democratic elections are rarely known until election day... or beyond. Understanding Elections through Statistics explores this random phenomenon from three primary points of view: predicting the election outcome using opinion polls, testing the election outcome using government-reported data, and exploring election data to better understand the people. Written for those with only a brief introduction to statistics, this book takes you on a statistical journey from how polls are taken to how they can—and should—be used to estimate current popular opinion. Once an understanding of the election process is built, we turn toward testing elections for evidence of unfairness. While holding elections has become the de facto proof of government legitimacy, those electoral processes may hide the dirty little secret of the government, illicitly ensuring a favorable election outcome. This book includes these features designed to make your statistical journey more enjoyable: Vignettes of elections, including maps, starting each chapter to motivate the material In-chapter cues to help one avoid the heavy math—or to focus on it End-of-chapter problems designed to review and extend what was covered in the chapter Many opportunities to turn the power of the R Statistical Environment to the enclosed election data files, as well as to those you find interesting The second edition improves upon this and includes: A rewrite of several chapters to make the underlying concepts more clear A chapter dedicated to confidence intervals, what they mean, and what they do not Additional experiments to help you better understand the statistics of elections A new introduction to polling, its terms, its processes, and its ethics From these features, it is clear that the audience for this book is quite diverse. It provides the statistics and mathematics for those interested in statistics and mathematics, but it also provides detours for those who just want a good read and a deeper understanding of elections.

Book Synopsis Rivalry and Revolution in South and East Asia by : Partha S. Ghosh
Download or read book Rivalry and Revolution in South and East Asia written by Partha S. Ghosh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this study reveals the forces of nationalism and internationalism at work side by side in the populous and volatile regions of South and East Asia which make up the 11 chapters of this volume. They cover regional security, political economy, territorial disputes and national unification. Problems such as those of Cambodia and the nuclearization of India, Pakistan and North Korea create serious international concern, while unresolved regional issues force nationalistic and military conflict. The irresistible popular pressure for economic integration with the global system, often without any corresponding commitment to political freedom, underlies it all. The cumulative effect of these diverse processes creates an explosive mix of international rivalries and national revolutions which raises the question of the possible arrival of the ‘Asian Century’.

Book Synopsis Shock to the System by : Michael K. Miller
Download or read book Shock to the System written by Michael K. Miller and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How violent events and autocratic parties trigger democratic change How do democracies emerge? Shock to the System presents a novel theory of democratization that focuses on how events like coups, wars, and elections disrupt autocratic regimes and trigger democratic change. Employing the broadest qualitative and quantitative analyses of democratization to date, Michael Miller demonstrates that more than nine in ten transitions since 1800 occur in one of two ways: countries democratize following a major violent shock or an established ruling party democratizes through elections and regains power within democracy. This framework fundamentally reorients theories on democratization by showing that violent upheavals and the preservation of autocrats in power—events typically viewed as antithetical to democracy—are in fact central to its foundation. Through in-depth examinations of 139 democratic transitions, Miller shows how democratization frequently follows both domestic shocks (coups, civil wars, and assassinations) and international shocks (defeat in war and withdrawal of an autocratic hegemon) due to autocratic insecurity and openings for opposition actors. He also shows how transitions guided by ruling parties spring from their electoral confidence in democracy. Both contexts limit the power autocrats sacrifice by accepting democratization, smoothing along the transition. Miller provides new insights into democratization’s predictors, the limited gains from events like the Arab Spring, the best routes to democratization for long-term stability, and the future of global democracy. Disputing commonly held ideas about violent events and their effects on democracy, Shock to the System offers new perspectives on how regimes are transformed.
