Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardware and Computer Organization is a practical, introductory book covering the architecture of modern microprocessors. It is designed to take practicing professionals under the hood of a PC and provide them with an understanding of the basics of the complex machine that has become such a pervasive part of our everyday life. The book is divided into three major sections: Hardware Fundamentals and Digital Design; Assembly Language Programming; and Computer Architecture. The book covers the basic theories and concepts of how hardware and software cooperatively interact to accomplish real-world tasks. It begins with a discussion of hardware and computer fundamentals, and then moves on to cover complex systems. The very important area of memory and its organization is covered in detail. Finally, the book looks at computers from a macro point of view, with performance issues, as well as pipelines, caches, and virtual memory are discussed. The book also looks into the future of reconfigurable hardware. Unlike other major books covering this subject matter, Dr. Berger's is aimed not at how to design a computer's hardware, but at providing an understanding of the total machine its strengths and weaknesses, how to deal with memory, how to write efficient assembly code that interacts directly with the hardware and takes best advantage of the underlying machine. Also unlike most other books, Berger shows how real engineering decisions are made in industry. The DVD accompanying the text will contain the following: source code files for all the code examples used in the text working demo versions of two different processor simulators video lectures from industry notables covering several of the major topics dealt with in the text.

Book excerpt: This publication provides a framework of best practice guidance on the management of healthcare waste to help healthcare organisations and other producers meet legislative requirements. It replaces the Health Services Advisory Committee guidance document 'Safe disposal of clinical waste' (1999). The guidance has been revised and updated to take account of legislative changes governing waste management, storage, carriage, treatment and disposal, health and safety. Key recommendations include: adopting a new methodology for identifying and classifying infectious and medicinal waste called the 'unified approach'; a revised colour-coded best practice waste segregation and packaging system to promote standardisation across the UK; the use of European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes for waste documentation; and an offensive/hygiene waste stream to describe non-infectious waste (human hygiene waste and sanitary protection waste such as nappies, incontinence pads etc.).

Regional externalities are a specific subset of externalities that can be defined as externalities where space plays a dominant role. The book offers examples of this class of externalities that can be divided into three categories: (1) externalities related to mobility and transport; (2) external economies of scale and cluster effects, and (3) spatial environmental externalities.

Book excerpt: Time domain electrometry (TDE) is a general term which includes time domain reflectrometry and time domain transmissiometry. It is a commercially-viable technique for leak detection, contaminant monitoring, and moisture content determination in contaminant transport modelling. Under demographic pressure, contaminated sites are increasingly being re-developed for domestic and industrial use; and this presents an urgent need for reliable, non-intrusive and integrated methods of subsurface characterization, detection and monitoring of organic and inorganic pollutants, soil moisture content and salinity. This book provides an overview of the potential application of TDE in geoenvironmental engineering and describes the geophysical methods used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted field of protease in the cellular environment and focuses on the recently elucidated functions of complex proteolytic systems in physiology and pathophysiology. Given the breadth and depth of information covered in the respective contributions, the book will be immensely useful for researchers working to identify targets for drug development. Multidisciplinary in scope, the book bridges the gap between fundamental and translational research, with applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry, making it a thought-provoking read for basic and applied scientists engaged in biomedical research. Proteases represent one of the largest and most diverse families of enzymes known, and we now know that they are involved in every aspect of a given organism’s life functions. Under physiological conditions, proteases are regulated by their endogenous inhibitors. However, when the activity of proteases is not correctly regulated, disease processes such as tumour progression, vascular remodelling, atherosclerotic plaque progression, ulcer, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and inflammation can result. Many infective microorganisms require proteases for replication or use them as virulence factors, which has facilitated the development of protease-targeted therapies for a variety of parasitic diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We construct the first comprehensive dataset of contingent liability realizations in advanced and emerging markets for the period 1990–2014. We find that contingent liability realizations are a major source of fiscal distress. The average fiscal cost of a contingent liability realization is 6 percent of GDP but costs can be as high as 40 percent for major financial sector bailouts. Contingent liability realizations are correlated among each other and tend to occur during periods of growth reversals and crises, accentuating pressure on the budget during already difficult times. Countries with stronger institutions are able to better control and address the underlying risks so that they are less exposed to contingent liability realizations.
