Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopf algebras have important connections to quantum theory, Lie algebras, knot and braid theory, operator algebras and other areas of physics and mathematics. They have been intensely studied in the past; in particular, the solution of a number of conjectures of Kaplansky from the 1970s has led to progress on the classification of semisimple Hopf algebras and on the structure of pointed Hopf algebras. Among the topics covered are results toward the classification of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras (semisimple and non-semisimple), as well as what is known about the extension theory of Hopf algebras. Some papers consider Hopf versions of classical topics, such as the Brauer group, while others are closer to work in quantum groups. The book also explores the connections and applications of Hopf algebras to other fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of Algebra and Geometry, a subject within the SCIENCES collection published by ISTE and Wiley, and the second of three volumes specifically focusing on algebra and its applications. Algebra and Applications 2 centers on the increasing role played by combinatorial algebra and Hopf algebras, including an overview of the basic theories on non-associative algebras, operads and (combinatorial) Hopf algebras. The chapters are written by recognized experts in the field, providing insight into new trends, as well as a comprehensive introduction to the theory. The book incorporates self-contained surveys with the main results, applications and perspectives. The chapters in this volume cover a wide variety of algebraic structures and their related topics. Alongside the focal topic of combinatorial algebra and Hopf algebras, non-associative algebraic structures in iterated integrals, chronological calculus, differential equations, numerical methods, control theory, non-commutative symmetric functions, Lie series, descent algebras, Butcher groups, chronological algebras, Magnus expansions and Rota–Baxter algebras are explored. Algebra and Applications 2 is of great interest to graduate students and researchers. Each chapter combines some of the features of both a graduate level textbook and of research level surveys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text aims to provide graduate students with a self-contained introduction to topics that are at the forefront of modern algebra, namely, coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras. The last chapter (Chapter 4) discusses several applications of Hopf algebras, some of which are further developed in the author’s 2011 publication, An Introduction to Hopf Algebras. The book may be used as the main text or as a supplementary text for a graduate algebra course. Prerequisites for this text include standard material on groups, rings, modules, algebraic extension fields, finite fields and linearly recursive sequences. The book consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 introduces algebras and coalgebras over a field K; Chapter 2 treats bialgebras; Chapter 3 discusses Hopf algebras and Chapter 4 consists of three applications of Hopf algebras. Each chapter begins with a short overview and ends with a collection of exercises which are designed to review and reinforce the material. Exercises range from straightforward applications of the theory to problems that are devised to challenge the reader. Questions for further study are provided after selected exercises. Most proofs are given in detail, though a few proofs are omitted since they are beyond the scope of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph integrates ideas from category theory, algebra and combinatorics. It is organized in three parts. Part I belongs to the realm of category theory. It reviews some of the foundational work of Benabou, Eilenberg, Kelly and Mac Lane on monoidal categories and of Joyal and Street on braided monoidal categories, and proceeds to study higher monoidal categories and higher monoidal functors. Special attention is devoted to the notion of a bilax monoidal functor which plays a central role in this work. Combinatorics and geometry are the theme of Part II. Joyal's species constitute a good framework for the study of algebraic structures associated to combinatorial objects. This part discusses the category of species focusing particularly on the Hopf monoids therein. The notion of a Hopf monoid in species parallels that of a Hopf algebra and reflects the manner in which combinatorial structures compose and decompose. Numerous examples of Hopf monoids are given in the text. These are constructed from combinatorial and geometric data and inspired by ideas of Rota and Tits' theory of Coxeter complexes. Part III is of an algebraic nature and shows how ideas in Parts I and II lead to a unified approach to Hopf algebras. The main step is the construction of Fock functors from species to graded vector spaces. These functors are bilax monoidal and thus translate Hopf monoids in species to graded Hopf algebras. This functorial construction of Hopf algebras encompasses both quantum groups and the Hopf algebras of recent prominence in the combinatorics literature. The monograph opens a vast new area of research. It is written with clarity and sufficient detail to make it accessible to advanced graduate students.

Book excerpt: This volume gives two new methods for constructing $p$-elementary Hopf algebra orders over the valuation ring $R$ of a local field $K$ containing the $p$-adic rational numbers. One method constructs Hopf orders using isogenies of commutative degree 2 polynomial formal groups of dimension $n$, and is built on a systematic study of such formal group laws. The other method uses an exponential generalization of a 1992 construction of Greither. Both constructions yield Raynaud orders as iterated extensions of rank $p$ Hopf algebras; the exponential method obtains all Raynaud orders whose invariants satisfy a certain $p$-adic condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a vector space whose dimension is the golden ratio? Of course not—the golden ratio is not an integer! But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: We prove that the kernel of the action of the modular group on the center of a semisimple factorizable Hopf algebra is a congruence subgroup whenever this action is linear. If the action is only projective, we show that the projective kernel is a congruence subgroup. To do this, we introduce a class of generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators and endow it with an action of the modular group that is compatible with the original one.

Book excerpt: Being the first monograph devoted to this subject, the book addresses the classification problem for semisimple Hopf algebras, a field that has attracted considerable attention in the last years. The special approach to this problem taken here is via semidirect product decompositions into Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras and group rings of cyclic groups of prime order. One of the main features of the book is a complete treatment of the structure theory for such Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account of a modern generalisation of differential geometry in which coordinates need not commute. This requires a reinvention of differential geometry that refers only to the coordinate algebra, now possibly noncommutative, rather than to actual points. Such a theory is needed for the geometry of Hopf algebras or quantum groups, which provide key examples, as well as in physics to model quantum gravity effects in the form of quantum spacetime. The mathematical formalism can be applied to any algebra and includes graph geometry and a Lie theory of finite groups. Even the algebra of 2 x 2 matrices turns out to admit a rich moduli of quantum Riemannian geometries. The approach taken is a `bottom up’ one in which the different layers of geometry are built up in succession, starting from differential forms and proceeding up to the notion of a quantum `Levi-Civita’ bimodule connection, geometric Laplacians and, in some cases, Dirac operators. The book also covers elements of Connes’ approach to the subject coming from cyclic cohomology and spectral triples. Other topics include various other cohomology theories, holomorphic structures and noncommutative D-modules. A unique feature of the book is its constructive approach and its wealth of examples drawn from a large body of literature in mathematical physics, now put on a firm algebraic footing. Including exercises with solutions, it can be used as a textbook for advanced courses as well as a reference for researchers.

It gives special attention to the change-of-rings spectral sequence for the cohomology of an extension of Hopf algebras and to the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence for the cohomology of classifying spaces and homotopy orbit spaces. In treating the change-of-rings spectral sequence, the book develops from scratch the necessary properties of extensions of Hopf algebras and constructs the spectral sequence in a form particularly suited to the introduction of Steenrod squares. The resulting theory can be used effectively for the computation of the cohomology rings of groups and Hopf algebras, and of the Steenrod algebra in particular, and so should play a useful role in stable homotopy theory. Similarly the book offers a self-contained construction of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, in a form suitable for the introduction of Steenrod operations. The corresponding theory is an effective tool for the computation of t
