Andy has finally been invited to be the cabin boy on his uncle's square-rigged cargo vessel, Java Sea. From the time the ship leaves Baltimore until it returns, carrying cargo to South American ports-of-call, Andy is exposed to an entirely new world. As the adventure unfolds, daily duties such as working in the galley and learning new skills like triangulation-figuring distances with a compass and a known triangle base line-keep Andy continually on the alert. When Captain Murphy agrees to take an English Naval Officer and his family to Halifax, Andy is presented with the opportunity for a whole new adventure that could eventually change the course of his life. Storms of the Indian Ocean course up the coast of Western Australia in winter - saltwater sailor and Master Mariner Gretta Finneson is on a desperate solo voyage in Vagabond, a vintage racing yacht. She must complete the passage to save a dolphin and whale watch charter in the pristine wildlife sanctuary at Shark Bay from development and destruction by powerful Chance Syndicates. Time and the odds are against her. The freedom of those who travel these trackless horizons of windswept oceans and the lonely outback is endangered, and it seems that failure is inevitable. Fellow Traveller, landscape artist Aidan Randell, cannot help her for he is tied to the fragile musician Zelina who is beset by floods and bushfires in her southern forest sanctuary. Adventurer, poet, and artist M.A. Hill is a unique voice in Australian literature, and she tells a powerful story that mirrors the relentless battle for the survival of our world's wild places. As the plot unravels in this second novel of The Travellers Trilogy, the diverse characters populate a landscape that is at once original yet familiar. The first novel, 'Trackless; a journey that follows no trails,' was praised as 'a compelling read' (Cockburn Gazette) 'a work of sheer literary genius' and 'one of the best books I've ever read.' The final tale, 'Setback: a passage through the dark,' will be released soon. If you read Tim Winton, you will enjoy the work of M.A.Hill. Her prose is lyrical, and her storytelling overlays many dimensions of reality.

Book Synopsis The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer by : Ray Pointer
Download or read book The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer written by Ray Pointer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of animated cartoons has for decades been dominated by the accomplishments of Walt Disney, giving the impression that he invented the medium. In reality, it was the work of several pioneers. Max Fleischer--inventor of the Rotoscope technique of tracing animation frame by frame over live-action footage--was one of the most prominent. By the 1930s, Fleischer and Disney were the leading producers of animated films but took opposite approaches. Where Disney reflected a Midwestern sentimentality, Fleischer presented a sophisticated urban attitude with elements of German Expressionism and organic progression. In contrast to Disney's naturalistic animation, Fleischer's violated physical laws, supporting his maxim: "If it can be done in real life, it isn't animation." As a result, Fleischer's cartoons were rough rather than refined, commercial rather than consciously artistic--yet attained a distinctive artistry through Fleischer's innovations. This book covers his life and work and the history of the studio that bore his name, with previously unpublished artwork and photographs.

Book excerpt: The true story of Canada's greatest sailor, the first to sail around the world single-handedly. When Joshua Slocum sailed into port in Massachusetts on June 27, 1898, he was the first man ever to have completed a voyage around the world without technology, money or companion. When a goat ate his charts, he managed to navigate through the Caribbean by memory and intuition. This is the true-life adventure story of an extraordinary man, who ran away to sea at sixteen and never looked back. Born on a farm in Nova Scotia, he apprenticed on voyages to China, Hong Kong and Indonesia; met and married his wife in Sydney, Australia, and raised his family aboard sailing vessels in ports around the world. He survived mutinies, lost cargoes, terrible storms, and treacheries at sea before resolving on his voyage around the world in a dilapidated oyster sloop he named The Spray. After settling down and writing his memoirs, he set sail on November 14, 1909, and was never seen again.
