Book excerpt: Spreading processes appear in diverse natural and technological systems, such as the spread of infectious diseases and the dissemination of information. It has been demonstrated that the structure of interaction among population members can dramatically influence spreading dynamics. Therefore, researchers have focused on studying spreading processes over complex networks, where interaction among individuals could be highly heterogeneous. This dissertation aims to add to the current understanding of networked spreading processes by investigating various aspects of the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model. Our first contribution is related to the inverse problem of continuous time SIS spreading over a graph. In other words, we show the possibility of inferring the underlying network from observations on the node states through time. We formulate the inverse problem as a Bayesian inference problem and find the posterior probabilities for the existence of uncertain links. Second, we study the SIS spreading process over time dependent networks, where the contact network's links are not permanent. To analyze the effect of link durations on the epidemic threshold of the SIS process, we develop a temporal network model. In this model, the temporal links result from the transition of nodes between two auxiliary node states, namely active and inactive. Combining the dynamics of the network and the spreading process, we derive the mean-field equations that describe SIS spreading processes over such temporal networks. The analysis of these equations reveals the effect of link durations on the epidemic threshold in the SIS process. Third, we study the localization of epidemics in the SIS process. In general, the SIS model has an absorbing state where all individuals are healthy. However, depending on the infection rate value, this process can reach a metastable state, where the infection does not die out. In this metastable state, some parts of the network can be disproportionately infected. We quantify the infection dispersion in the network, and formulate a convex optimization problem to find an upper bound for the dispersion of infection in the network. Finally, we focus on the estimation of spreading data from partially available information. In general, various spreading-related functions are defined over the nodes of a network. Assuming access to the values of a function for a subset of the nodes, we use the concept of effective resistance distance and feed forward neural networks, to estimate the function for the remaining nodes. Although this dissertation focuses on the SIS model, the methods we have presented and developed here are applicable to a broad range of stochastic networked spreading processes. The exact mathematical treatment of such processes is intractable due to their exponential space size, and therefore there are still various unknown aspects of their behavior that require further work. Our studies in this dissertation advance the current knowledge about networked spreading models.

Book excerpt: The study of dynamic processes that take place on heterogeneous networks is essential to better understand, forecast, and manage human activities in an increasingly connected world. In this Thesis, we elucidate the role of the network topology as well as the nature of the underlying processes in a variety of phenomena rooted on highly connected network systems. We use real world applications as the motivation to address three distinct questions. The first question is: how is the spread of infectious diseases at the global scale mediated by long-range human travel? We show that network topology, geography, traffic structure and individual mobility patterns are all essential for accurate predictions of disease spreading. Specifically, we study contagion dynamics through the air transportation network by means of a stochastic agent-tracking model that accounts for the spatial distribution of airports, detailed air traffic and the correlated nature of mobility patterns and waiting-time distributions of individual agents. We formulate a metric of influential spreading-the geographic spreading centrality-which provides an accurate measure of the early-time spreading power of individual nodes. The second question is: what is the effect of human behavioral changes in their mobility patterns on the dynamics of contagion through transportation networks? We address this question by developing a model of awareness coupled to disease spreading through mobility networks, where we implement two kinds of behavioral changes: selfish and policy-driven. In analogy with the concept of price of anarchy in transportation networks subject to congestion, we show that maximizing individual utility leads to a loss of welfare for the social group, measured here by the size of the outbreak. The third question is: what are the mechanisms behind the formation of cell assemblies in neural activity networks? From a neuroscience perspective: How can one explain functional compartmentalization in a globally-connected brain? Here we show that simple mechanisms of neural interaction allow for the emergence of robust cell assemblies through self-organization. We demonstrate the properties of such neural network processes with a minimal-ingredients model of excitation and inhibition between neurons that leads to self-organization of neural activity into local quantized states, even though the underlying network system is globally connected.

Net- works can act as a substrate for dynamical process, such as the diffusion of information or disease throughout populations. Network structure can determine the temporal evolution of a dynamical process, including the characteristics of the steady state. The simplest representation of a complex system is an undirected, unweighted, single layer graph. In contrast, real systems exhibit heterogeneity of interaction strength and type. Such systems are frequently represented as weighted multiplex networks, and in this work we in- corporate these heterogeneities into a master equation formalism in order to study their effects on spreading processes. We also carry out simulations on synthetic and empirical networks, and show that spread- ing dynamics, in particular the speed at which contagion spreads via threshold mechanisms, depend non-trivially on these heterogeneities. Further, we show that an important family of networks undergo reentrant phase transitions in the size and frequency of global cascades as a result of these interactions. A challenging feature of real systems is their tendency to evolve over time, since the changing structure of the underlying network is critical to the behaviour of overlying dynamical processes. We show that one aspect of temporality, the observed “burstiness” in interaction patterns, leads to non-monotic changes in the spreading time of threshold driven contagion processes. The above results shed light on the effects of various network heterogeneities, with respect to dynamical processes that evolve on these networks.
