Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schott’s Original Miscellanywas a publishing phenomenon. It sired a host of sequels and parodies. But no matter how patiently and for how many years they begged, the potential canine readership was left to pine, unserved. Until now. Spott’s Canine Miscellanyis the obsessive dog owner’s answer to the original. It echoes (and parodies) the randomness of entry and stylish design of the original, but has been written entirely for dogs and their doting owners and admirers. The result is an irresistible potpourri of canine facts, embracing the essential, the trivial, the intriguing, and the extraordinary. In the pages of this perfect kennel-top or coffee-table book to paw through at random, you will discover such whimsical treats as dog epigraphs, the origins of breed names, an international guide to the word “dog,” the world’s oldest dog, award-winning dogs, Aesop’s fabled dogs, dog-bite statistics, a Lassie profile, and dogs who went down with theTitanic. It is, in short, the perfect companion for your perfect companion.

Download or read book Telling Tales written by David Blamires and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany has had a profound influence on English stories for children. The Brothers Grimm, The Swiss Family Robinson and Johanna Spyri's Heidi quickly became classics but, as David Blamires clearly articulates in this volume, many other works have been fundamental in the development of English chilren's stories during the 19th Centuary and beyond. Telling Tales is the first comprehensive study of the impact of Germany on English children's books, covering the period from 1780 to the First World War. Beginning with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, moving through the classics and including many other collections of fairytales and legends (Musaus, Wilhelm Hauff, Bechstein, Brentano) Telling Tales covers a wealth of translated and adapted material in a large variety of forms, and pays detailed attention to the problems of translation and adaptation of texts for children. In addition, Telling Tales considers educational works (Campe and Salzmann), moral and religious tales (Carove, Schmid and Barth), historical tales, adventure stories and picture books (including Wilhelm Busch's Max and Moritz) together with an analysis of what British children learnt through textbooks about Germany as a country and its variegated history, particularly in times of war.

Book Synopsis The Reign of James VI by : Julian Goodare
Download or read book The Reign of James VI written by Julian Goodare and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2000-01-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of James VI (1567–1625) remains one of the most enigmatic in Scottish history. There are long periods within it that resemble black holes in our knowledge. This study is a concerted attempt by a group of ten scholars of the reign, drawn from three different disciplines, to shed light on its politics and government, viewed through various perspectives. These include the royal court, which is analysed through its literature, architecture and ceremony; noble factionalism; relations with England; a revised model of tensions between church and state; and the relationship between the government and the Highlands, the Borders and the south west, a future region of opposition to Charles I. This study also analyses James as a literary author, correspondent, husband and 'universal king'. The book offers alternatives to accepted views of the reign, dismissing both Melvillianism and 'laissez faire monarchy' as useful tools. It sees the centre of politics as the interaction between an expanded and increasingly expensive royal court and a phenomenal growth of the state, based on a huge increase in legislation and the business of the Privy Council.

Where else can you find, packed onto one page, the names of golf strokes, a history of the Hat Tax, cricketing dismissals, nouns of assemblage, an unofficial motto of the US Postal Service, and the flag of Guadeloupe? Where else but Schott's Original Miscellany will you stumble across John Lennon's cat, the supplier of bagpipes to the Queen, the labors of Hercules, and the brutal methods of murder encountered by Miss Marple? A book like no other, Schott's Original Miscellany is entertaining, informative, unpredictable, and utterly addictive.
