Download or read book Zebra Stripes written by Timothy M. Caro and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do zebras have stripes? Popular explanations range from camouflage to confusion of predators, social facilitation, and even temperature regulation. It is a challenge to test these proposals on large animals living in the wild, but using a combination of careful observations, simple field experiments, comparative information, and logic, Caro concludes that black-and-white stripes are an adaptation to thwart biting fly attack.
Book Synopsis Journal of Applied Nonlinear Dynamics by : J. A. Tenreiro Machado
Download or read book Journal of Applied Nonlinear Dynamics written by J. A. Tenreiro Machado and published by L& H Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary journal publishes original and new research results on Applied Nonlinear Dynamics in science and engineering. The aim of the journal is to stimulate more research interest and attention for nonlinear dynamical behaviors and engineering nonlinearity for design. The manuscripts in complex dynamical systems with nonlinearity and chaos are solicited, which includes physical mechanisms of complex systems and engineering applications of nonlinear dynamics. The journal provides a place to researchers for the rapid exchange of ideas and techniques in nonlinear dynamics and engineering nonlinearity for design. No length limitations for contributions are set, but only concisely written manuscripts are published. Brief papers are published on the basis of Technical Notes. Discussions of previous published papers are welcome. Audience Physicists, Engineers, Mathematicians, Earth and Environmental Scientists involved in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.
