Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sporting Magazine, Vol. 38: April 1811 N Friday, the 5th instant, died, in the hundreth year of his age, Mr. William Furnish, of York, and formerly an innkeeper in that city. No man was better known or more respected by all degrees in life. Indeed his good and upright con duct as a citizen-his cheerful, re spectable, and venerable appear ance as a man, commanded the ap probation of all who knew him, and of all who saw him; and from his open and honest freedom of conversation, he was held in great esteem by a number of gentlemen, and by none more than by the late Peregrine Wentworth, Esq. He was ever partial to the sports of the field, especially to greyhound cours ing; for which diversion he always kept the best dogs, and was rec honed a most accurate judge of them. But his long course is now run - and he has fallen into the grave, respected and highly vene rated, by a most extensive circle of 'relatives, friends, and acquaint ances, like a full, rich, and mellow isbockof corn, to which time had long not wished to put his scythe. Lately died, Charles Smith, Esq. Of Rochdale, ' a gentleman well known on the turf, and truly and honourably regarded by all gentle lman who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to training for climbing, there is an overwhelming amount of information out there. In The Science of Climbing Training, top Spanish climbing coach Sergio Consuegra has analysed our sporting needs from the perspective of exercise and sports science to provide an evidence-based approach to training for climbing. It is designed to help us improve climbing performance, whether we're taking the next step in our training as we work towards a project, or if we're a coach looking to optimise our athletes' training. It doesn't contain any 'magic' training methods, because there are none – although you might be shocked by the science behind some popular methods. The first part explains what training is and how different training methods are governed by the physiological and biomechanical processes that occur in the body. The second part looks at how to improve specific needs (such as finger strength and forearm muscle endurance) and general needs (such as basic physical conditioning, pulling strength, pushing strength, strength training for injury prevention) for the different demands and types of climbing and bouldering. The third and final part suggests the best ways to fit it all together. It looks at adjusting training volume and intensity, and tapering to encourage supercompensation, all to help us achieve improved performance, whether it's a breaking into a higher grade, ticking that long-standing project or climbing a dream route.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills an important gap in the sport governance literature by engaging in critical reflection on the concept of ‘good governance’. It examines the theoretical perspectives that lead to different conceptualisations of governance and, therefore, to different standards for institutional quality. It explores the different practical strategies that have been employed to achieve the implementation of good governance principles. The first part of the book aims to shed light on the complexity and nuances of good governance by examining theoretical perspectives including leadership, value, feminism, culture and systems. The second part of the book has a practical focus, concentrating on reform strategies, from compliance policies and codes of ethics to external reporting and integrity systems. Together, these studies shed important new light on how we define and understand governance, and on the limits and capabilities of different methods for inducing good governance. With higher ethical standards demanded in sport business and management than ever before, this book is important reading for all advanced students and researchers with an interest in sport governance and sport policy, and for all sport industry professionals looking to improve their professional practice.
