Book excerpt: Is he hallucinating? Or is our hero actually traveling into vintage photographs? Robert Eringer takes you on a journey unlike any other, running into Mark Twain, and others from bygone eras--all the while paying homage to an iconic TV series, The Twilight Zone. Last Flight Out is a highly imaginative odyssey unlike any other in literature and, if you're willing to suspend reality, may be the most fun reading you may have had in a long time. Worn down by the stresses and strains of everyday life, harassed bar owner goes for a drive, winds up at the airport and, on impulse, grabs the last evening flight. Onboard, he meets a woman in retro garb that recommends he continue to Sausalito and visit a vintage photography shop. Finding himself outside the shop while walking around next morning, he wanders in and discovers a vast collection of black-and-white and sepia photographs. Feeling for the proprietor, an elderly hippie, for whom vintage pics is clearly a passion, he springs for a photo of Mark Twain. Much later, in his hotel room, after an evening of food and drink, the bar owner feels giddy then suddenly finds himself facing off to Samuel Clemens across a pool table. Stunned, he allows himself to be goaded by Clemens into a game of billiards--and the adventure begins. Just as mysteriously as he traveled to New York in 1908, he is back in his hotel again. Convinced that the gallery proprietor slipped hallucinogenic drugs into a Tootsie Pop that came with the photo, he returns to the gallery to demand an explanation. The proprietor vehemently denies doing anything remiss, suggesting that every photo in his shop is an adventure, and that the nature of the protagonist's journey is his alone. But then the proprietor has an idea of his own: If the journey to see Mark Twain truly happened, why not do the same with a photo of President Kennedy's arrival in Dallas on November 22nd, 1963 and prevent an assassination that, in the old hippie's mind, causes an escalation of the Vietnam War leaving many of his friends dead and his own life in turmoil. He quickly finds such a photo, taken at Love Field, and the next journey begins...

Book excerpt: For nearly ten years beginning in 1993, Robert Eringer lived a clandestine life of intrigue, conducting a spectrum of covert operations for the FBI's foreign counterintelligence division. His primary assignment: to lure American traitor Edward Lee Howard to capture. About to be arrested by the FBI for spying for Moscow, CIA officer Howard defected to the Soviet Union in 1985. But then he wanted to tell his story to the world. Utilizing cover as a book publishing consultant, the author gained Howard's trust as his editor and confidant. As Eringer's skillfully orchestrated ruse progressed, he pierced not only Howard's inner circle of KGB cronies--including the KGB's former chairman, making him an unwitting intelligence asset--but also Howard's Cuban intelligence contact network in Havana. Only at the eleventh hour did a highly politicized Justice Department order Howard's "extraordinary rendition" scrapped; he died mysteriously under ominous circumstances in Moscow in 2002. Nonetheless, the secrets Eringer gathered shed light on such sensitive espionage cases as the treachery of senior CIA turncoat Aldrich Ames and FBI traitor Robert Hanssen. In addition to his counter-espionage docket, Eringer undertook assignments for the FBI's criminal division, including a ruse he devised to hasten the extradition from France of notorious convicted murderer Ira Einhorn. Ruse tells the unknown side of a significant piece of U.S. intelligence history, an unvarnished insider's view of the FBI between the end of the Cold War and the events of 9/11.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motional Blur tells the story of a disaffected surfer, Luke Andersen, who drives for a black car service part-time. When he’s summoned for a fare involving a five-and-a-half hour ride from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas, this obligation ruins his birthday plans, even though he tries to refuse but doesn’t succeed. When they reach Vegas, his mysterious fare, Charles Gearhart, a man in his mid-60s, tells Luke to keep going. What should have been a day drive becomes a seemingly meandering trip through the western United States, with Gearhart directing Luke through Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. Luke repeatedly tries to beg off, but can’t. The deeper he gets into this journey, the more intrigued he becomes by his passenger, who constantly imparts wisdom to help his wayward driver grow up. Theirs is a journey in search of answers. And, in the novel’s stunning conclusion, they find them. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: A new novel featuring a detective with Tourette's syndrome sounds a lot like Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn, but don't be fooled. Lo Mein is Robert Eringer's second book (after 1998's Crinkum Crankum) to star ex-FBI agent Jeff Dalkin, a Bruce Willis look-alike with an involuntarily foul mouth, and this time he's on the trail of a New York artist-turned-terrorist. Willard Stukey is going to keep murdering people who are dressed as Disney characters until he gets a solo exhibition at MoMA and a fullpage review in the New York Times. And Dalkin is the intrepid sleuth hired by Michael Eisner himself to stop the madness. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

Book excerpt: The true story of Ira Einhorn, the Philadelphia antiwar crusader, environmental activist, and New Age guru with a murderous dark side. During the cultural shockwaves of the 1960s and ’70s, Ira Einhorn—nicknamed the “Unicorn”—was the leading radical voice for the antiwar movement at the University of Pennsylvania. At his side were such noted activists as Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. A brilliantly articulate advocate for peace in a turbulent era, he rallied followers toward the growing antiestablishment causes of free love, drugs, and radical ecological reform. In 1979, when the mummified remains of his girlfriend, Holly Maddux, a Bryn Mawr flower child from Tyler, Texas, were found in a trunk in his apartment, Einhorn claimed a CIA frame-up. Incredibly, the network of influential friends, socialites, and powerful politicians he’d charmed and manipulated over the years supported him. Represented by renowned district attorney and future senator Arlen Specter, Einhorn was released on bail. But before trial, he fled the country to an idyllic town in the French wine region and disappeared. It would take more than twenty years—and two trials—to finally bring Einhorn to justice. Based on more than two years of research and 250 interviews, as well as the chilling private journals of Einhorn and Maddux, prize-winning journalist Steven Levy paints an astonishing and complicated portrait of a man motivated by both genius and rage. The basis for 1998 NBC television miniseries The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer, The Unicorn’s Secret is a “spellbinding sociological/true crime study,” revealing the dark and tragic dimensions of a man who defined an era, only to shatter its ideals (Publishers Weekly).
