Book excerpt: Famous for being deathly serious, the vampire genre has a consistent yet often critically overlooked subgenre--the comedic spoof and satire. This is the first book dedicated entirely to documenting and analyzing the vampire comedy on film and television. Various types of comedy are discussed, outlining the important differences between spoofing, serious-spoofing, parody and satire. Seminal films such as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Love at First Bite, Vampire in Brooklyn, Dracula: Dead and Loving It and What We Do In the Shadows are featured. More importantly, this book demonstrates how comedy is central to both the common perception of the vampire and the genre's ever-evolving character, making it an essential read for those interested in the laughing undead and creatures that guffaw in the night.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Vampire Fiction since 1900: Blood Relations, as that subtitle suggests, makes the case for considering Spanish vampire fiction an index of the complex relationship between intercultural phenomena and the specifics of a time, place, and author. Supernatural beings that drink blood are found in folklore worldwide, Spain included, and writers ranging from the most canonical to the most marginal have written vampire stories, Spanish ones included too. When they do, they choose between various strategies of characterization or blend different ones together. How much will they draw on conventions of the transnational corpus? Are their vampires to be local or foreign; alluring or repulsive; pitiable or pure evil, for instance? Decisions like these determine the messages texts carry and, when made by Spanish authors, may reveal aspects of their culture with striking candidness, perhaps because the fantasy premise seems to give the false sense of security that this is harmless escapism and, since metaphorical meaning is implicit, it is open to argument and, if necessary, denial. Part I gives a chronological text-by-text appreciation of all the texts included in this volume, many of them little known even to Hispanists and few if any to non-Spanish Gothic scholars. It also provides a plot summary and brief background on the author of each. These entries are free-standing and designed to be consulted for reference or read together to give a sense of the evolution of the paradigm since 1900. Part II considers the corpus comparatively, first with regard to its relationship to folklore and religion and then contagion and transmission. Spanish Vampire Fiction since 1900: Blood Relations will be of interest to Anglophone Gothic scholars who want to develop their knowledge of the Spanish dimension of the mode and to Hispanists who want to look at some canonical texts and authors from a new perspective but also gain an awareness of some interesting and decidedly non-canonical material.

Instead, I'm thrust into a world I know nothing about, a world I'm not ready for, and a world filled with real, live vampires. Well, I'm not sure that they're live, but you know what I mean. The people who live here in this house - the vamps - are older than me. They're more experienced than me. They're...broodier than me. They also know that when this adventure is over, I'm going to have to make a very hard choice, and I'm just not sure that I'm ready. Sweet Nightmares: The Vampire's Melody is a polyamorous, bisexual, open-door steamy book featuring vampires, biting, and lots and lots of fangs. This story includes puns, humor, joking around, pop culture references, and of course, lots of drinking blood.

Book excerpt: Past the sparkling blue sea and inside the solid walls of the white marble city of Darenjar, an unseen venom spreads, bringing all under the control of a dark power. But still the people speak of the wars of a thousand years ago, of the days before the Lost God was banished, of the days when dragons flew the skies, of the Prophecies. The young thief Berran knew nothing much of lost gods or prophecies when he unintentionally stole Raiephin's Tear, a creation of the Dark God that has all the magic of the world imbued in its core. It is a daring act that attracts the eyes of those with evil intent. The theft sparks off a chain reaction of events with Berran in the middle. The authorities have never been fond of him, but now someone very high up wants him dead. Since stealing the Tear, he finds he has an inexplicable command over the highest levels of magic. His mystery-shrouded past isn't coughing up any answers, but it is doing a good job creating more questions. Enduring pain and hardship, Berran realizes that friendship is only one part of the key to unlocking the riddles of his life. He knows he's not a brave hero like those in the stories of old. However, at times fear proves to be a good thing as Berran is swept up in the inextricable grasp of a powerful prophecy, trying to resurrect the Lost God and restore the magic that is slipping away from the world.

Book excerpt: When you like, live forever, what's there to live for? 'About three things I was absolutely certain. First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe. Second, there was a vampire part of him - which I assumed was wildly out of his control - that wanted me dead. And third, I unconditionally, irrevocably, impenetrably, heterogeneously, gynecologically, and disreputably wished he had kissed me.' And thus Belle Goose falls in love with the mysterious and sparkly Edwart Mullen in this hilarious send-up of Twilight. Pale and klutzy, Belle arrives in Switchblade, Oregon looking for adventure, or at least an undead classmate. She soon discovers Edwart, a super-hot computer nerd with zero interest in girls. After witnessing a number of strange events - Edwart leaves his hash browns untouched at lunch! - he saves her from a flying snowball and Belle has a dramatic revelation: Edwart is a vampire. But how can she convince Edwart to bite her and transform her into his eternal bride, especially when he seems to find girls so repulsive? Complete with romance, danger, insufficient parental guardianship, creepy stalker-like behaviour, and a vampire prom, Nightlight is the hysterical tale of a vampire-obsessed girl, looking for love in all the wrong places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1897, Bram Stoker’s Dracula has never been out of print. Yet most people are familiar with the title character from the movies. Count Dracula is one of the most-filmed literary characters in history—but has he (or Stoker’s novel) ever been filmed accurately? In its third edition, this study focuses on 18 adaptations of Dracula from 1922 to 2012, comparing them to the novel and to each other. Fidelity to the novel does not always guarantee a good movie, while some of the better films are among the more freely adapted. The Universal and Hammer sequels are searched for traces of Stoker, along with several other films that borrow from the novel. The author concludes with a brief look at four latter-day projects that are best dismissed or viewed for ironic laughs.

Book excerpt: Take the Paragon rules from Tremorworks. Add a gun toting cyborg, a fairy, a young girl who's a martial arts enthusiast and a guy with psychic powers. Place them in a world where they know they are characters in a game like world. A world populated by dragons, AI constructs, magic, and possibly a mermaid or two. Stir. This is the result. Everyone has an inventory, NPCs are stuck being average, and those select few that become Player Characters solve the mysteries of the world as best they can. In fact, they do it officially, for the government, as part of a 5 year initiative. Our heroes find that, for about the last hundred years or so, someone has been quietly abducting PCs around the world for unknown reasons. They have to find out who, and put a stop to it, because it seems they are next on the list to disappear. Here you'll find a little humor, a little romance, a little gunplay, and a whole lot of adventure.
