Book excerpt: Television has changed drastically in the Soviet Union over the last three decades. In 1960, only five percent of the population had access to TV, but now the viewing population has reached near total saturation. Today's main source of information in the USSR, television has becomeMikhail Gorbachev's most powerful instrument for paving the way for major reform. Containing a wealth of interviews with major Soviet and American media figures and fascinating descriptions of Soviet TV shows, Ellen Mickiewicz's wide-ranging, vividly written volume compares over one hundred hours of Soviet and A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable introduction to Signals and Systems, this textbook has been developed by the author from his experience of teaching this particular subject to undergraduate students. It is suitable for B.E./B.Tech students in such disciplines as Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering. The book provides a clear understanding of the issues that students face in assimilating this highly mathematical subject. It is a comprehensive analytical treatment of signals and systems with a strong emphasis on solving problems. Each topic is supported by sufficient numbers of solved examples. Besides, a variety of tricky objective type questions have been included at the end of every chapter. Emphasizing systems approach, the book offers a unified treatment of both continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems. The analysis tools such as Fourier transform, Laplace transform, sampling theorem and Z-transform are presented elaborately. Conceptual understanding is reinforced through plenty of worked examples. The book concludes with a chapter focused on realization of Finite Impulse Response (FIR) and Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters. Several appendices provide the requisite background mathematical material for ease of reference by the students

Book excerpt: An overarching framework for comparing and steering complex adaptive systems is developed through understanding the mechanisms that generate their intricate signal/boundary hierarchies. Complex adaptive systems (cas), including ecosystems, governments, biological cells, and markets, are characterized by intricate hierarchical arrangements of boundaries and signals. In ecosystems, for example, niches act as semi-permeable boundaries, and smells and visual patterns serve as signals; governments have departmental hierarchies with memoranda acting as signals; and so it is with other cas. Despite a wealth of data and descriptions concerning different cas, there remain many unanswered questions about "steering" these systems. In Signals and Boundaries, John Holland argues that understanding the origin of the intricate signal/border hierarchies of these systems is the key to answering such questions. He develops an overarching framework for comparing and steering cas through the mechanisms that generate their signal/boundary hierarchies. Holland lays out a path for developing the framework that emphasizes agents, niches, theory, and mathematical models. He discusses, among other topics, theory construction; signal-processing agents; networks as representations of signal/boundary interaction; adaptation; recombination and reproduction; the use of tagged urn models (adapted from elementary probability theory) to represent boundary hierarchies; finitely generated systems as a way to tie the models examined into a single framework; the framework itself, illustrated by a simple finitely generated version of the development of a multi-celled organism; and Markov processes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this annual series, Applied and Computational Control, Signals, and Circuits, is to keep abreast of the fast-paced developments in computational mathematics and scientific computing and their increasing use by researchers and engineers in control, signals, and circuits. The series is dedicated to fostering effective communication between mathematicians, computer scientists, computational scientists, software engineers, theorists, and practicing engineers. This interdisciplinary scope is meant to blend areas of mathematics (such as linear algebra, operator theory, and certain branches of analysis) and computational mathematics (numerical linear algebra, numerical differential equations, large scale and parallel matrix computations, numerical optimization) with control and systems theory, signal and image processing, and circuit analysis and design. The disciplines mentioned above have long enjoyed a natural synergy. There are distinguished journals in the fields of control and systems the ory, as well as signal processing and circuit theory, which publish high quality papers on mathematical and engineering aspects of these areas; however, articles on their computational and applications aspects appear only sporadically. At the same time, there has been tremendous recent growth and development of computational mathematics, scientific comput ing, and mathematical software, and the resulting sophisticated techniques are being gradually adapted by engineers, software designers, and other scientists to the needs of those applied disciplines.

Book excerpt: Since the turn of the last century when the field of catalysis was born, iron and cobalt have been key players in numerous catalysis processes. These metals, due to their ability to activate CO and CH, haev a major economic impact worldwide. Several industrial processes and synthetic routes use these metals: biomass-to-liquids (BTL), coal-to-liquids (CTL), natural gas-to-liquids (GTL), water-gas-shift, alcohol synthesis, alcohol steam reforming, polymerization processes, cross-coupling reactions, and photocatalyst activated reactions. A vast number of materials are produced from these processes, including oil, lubricants, waxes, diesel and jet fuels, hydrogen (e.g., fuel cell applications), gasoline, rubbers, plastics, alcohols, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, feed-stock chemicals, and other alternative materials. However, given the true complexities of the variables involved in these processes, many key mechanistic issues are still not fully defined or understood. This Special Issue of Catalysis will be a collaborative effort to combine current catalysis research on these metals from experimental and theoretical perspectives on both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. We welcome contributions from the catalysis community on catalyst characterization, kinetics, reaction mechanism, reactor development, theoretical modeling, and surface science.

Book excerpt: Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes summarizes the present knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of free flavin, modified flavins occurring in nature, and deazaflavin. This information forms the fundamental basis for understanding the catalytic properties of flavoenzymes. Flavoproteins involved in transport, electron transfer, oxidation, dehydrogenation and hydroxylation reactions are discussed with respect to their biochemical and biophysical properties. The book presents the catalytic mechanisms of the flavoproteins in detail and, where available, three-dimensional structures and molecular biology data are included. The medical aspects of free and protein-bound flavin are also briefly discussed. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes is an essential reference source for chemists, biochemists, toxicologists, biologists, pharmacologists, and researchers in the pharmaceutical industry.

It is written to show readers how to design effective and working electronic filters. The background information and equations from the first edition have been moved into an appendix to allow easier flow of the text while still providing the information for those who are interested. The addition of questions at the end of each chapter as well as electronic simulation tools has allowed for a more practical, user-friendly text. Provides a practical design guide to both analog and digital electronic filters Includes electronic simulation tools Keeps heavy mathematics to a minimum
