Book excerpt: In 1877 Victorian-era Spiritualists who believed in communication with the dead held a camp meeting on the shores of Onset Bay in Wareham, Massachusetts. The community they founded at Onset soon emerged as one of America's leading centers of Spiritualism. Subsequently buffeted by a series of scandals that exposed several of its mediums as frauds and facing an influx of tourists intent on recreation rather than religious revelation, Onset saw Spiritualist influence collapse after just two decades. Spiritualist Onset: Talking with the Dead by the Sea is a fascinating exploration of this charming Victorian village's unique origins and the rapid rise and controversial decline of Spiritualism in "the Spiritualists' Summer Home by the Sea".

There Alice falls in love with a charismatic medium, Thomas Chester Holloway, who convinces her that she has the power to correspond with the dead. Since its incorporation in 1739, Wareham has persevered and flourished through the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Industrial Revolution. In the nineteenth century, the seaside town quickly became a tourist destination and experienced an early economic boom as salt works, manufacturing mills, ironworks, nail factories and cranberry harvesting developed in the region. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of June 13, 1814, the British warship HMS" Nimrod" attacked the town of Wareham, Massachusetts. As a center for shipbuilding and iron, Wareham was a perfect target for the British fleet. When the lead barge deceptively appeared with a white flag at its bow, Wareham never suspected anything but a truce and was ill prepared for the attack. A raiding party with six barges and two hundred men burned the town's cotton mill, destroyed its vessels and took its citizens as hostages. When "Nimrod" tried to flee the shores, it ran aground and had to throw its cannons and guns overboard in order to lighten its load and sail away. Wareham was left smoldering in its wake. Follow authors J. North Conway and Jesse Dubuc as they trace the attack from the initial spotting of the British fleet to the discovery of the lost "Nimrod "cannons.

Download or read book Massachusetts Correctional Institution-Bridgewater written by Michael J. Maddigan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once known as MCI-Bridgewater and earlier as the Massachusetts State Farm, the Bridgewater Correctional Complex opened in 1854. It was one of several progressive charitable institutions the state created as a model for communities around the world. However, deteriorating conditions for its residents shadowed Bridgewater's evolution from an almshouse to a prison and hospital for the criminally insane. A century later, it was among the nation's most notorious asylums. Historian Michael J. Maddigan offers a riveting examination of this infamous history, including the inspiration for state-sponsored welfare, moral and legal challenges and the experiences of the people who lived and worked there.

Book Synopsis The Specter of the Indian by : Kathryn Troy
Download or read book The Specter of the Indian written by Kathryn Troy and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the significance of Indian control spirits as a dominating force in nineteenth-century American Spiritualism. The Specter of the Indian unveils the centrality of Native American spirit guides during the emergent years of American Spiritualism. By pulling together cultural and political history; the studies of religion, race, and gender; and the ghostly, Kathryn Troy offers a new layer of understanding to the prevalence of mystically styled Indians in American visual and popular culture. The connections between Spiritualist print and contemporary Indian policy provide fresh insight into the racial dimensions of social reform among nineteenth-century Spiritualists. Troy draws fascinating parallels between the contested belief of Indians as fading from the world, claims of returned apparitions, and the social impetus to provide American Indians with a means of existence in white America. Rather than vanishing from national sight and memory, Indians and their ghosts are shown to be ever present. This book transports the readers into dimly lit parlor rooms and darkened cabinets and lavishes them with detailed séance accounts in the words of those who witnessed them. Scrutinizing the otherworldly whisperings heard therein highlights the voices of mediums and those they sought to channel, allowing the author to dig deep into Spiritualist belief and practice. The influential presence of Indian ghosts is made clear and undeniable.
