Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. GOD'S TESTIMONT AGAINST SPIRITUALISM. "There is, perhaps, no fact within the range of biblical science," says Rev. C. Munger, "in which critics are more agreed than in this, namely, that the word demon denotes a spiritual being, or that demons among the Greeks, Jews, and Christians, according to common belief and use, were spirits.... There is an entire unanimity among critics, so far as we have examined, in the fact named.... "Whether the spirit is human or superhuman, is not so well agreed; neither is it at all material to our argument." Without such an admission, so far as the Jews are concerned, the practice of Christ and his apostles can never be satisfactorily explained. If they did not regard the spirits, or demons, by them cast out, real existences, they intentionally misled the people. We have shown that demons among the heathen were worshiped as the ghosts of departed heroes, conquerors, and potentates, and that popular superstition had deified them. Many of these demons were supposed to be evil spirits, while many of them were held in high esteem for their moral virtues. This was the heathen view. But the New Testament writers invariably use the term to denote evil spirits. God has regarded the practice of consulting the dead with so much displeasure, that he has enacted stringent statutes against it. The thunderbolts of the divine displeasure are suspended over our heads at every step we take in this direction. To seek unto mediums is to forsake God. "We are to turn from them as from the path to hell. The law declares, "There shall not be found among you a necromancer." Deut. xviii, 11. The people understood this to mean, "one who consulted disembodied spirits." "A man also, or a woman, that hath a familiar...

Book excerpt: William Rimmer (1816–1879) is arguably the first modernist American sculptor, although his inventive originality has not been fully acknowledged. Rimmer cultivated an art of ideas and personal expression whilst supporting himself as a physician and, later, as a teacher of art anatomy at the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York. Unlike his contemporaries, he advocated the creation of sculpture drawn entirely from the artist’s imagination, as opposed to antique archetypes or live models. In this way, he sought to reframe excellence in American art as something that must be found within, rather than derived from Europe. In this new monograph, the meaning of Rimmer’s works is for the first time considered from a combination of perspectives, such as close visual analysis (including X-ray and infrared), historical documentation, and social context. These are enriched with discussion of the artist’s own bipolar disorder, deeply-held spiritualism, and views on gender equality—considering women just as talented as men, he used naked male models in all-female classes long before his contemporaries, and produced an allegorical sculpture of fighting lions that criticized the tyranny of men over women. This book will be of great interest to academics, students, art museums, collectors, dealers, art historians, and members of the public with an affinity for Rimmer’s work. It will also appeal to those with a broader interest in American culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a rhetorical analysis of female spirit medium's autobiographies in the historical and social contexts of Victorian era America. Invisible Hosts explores how the central tenets of Spiritualism influenced ways in which women conceived of their bodies and their civic responsibilities, arguing that Spiritualist ideologies helped to lay the foundation for the social and political advances made by women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As public figures, female spirit mediums of the Victorian era were often accused of unfeminine (and therefore transgressive) behavior. A rhetorical analysis of nineteenth-century spirit mediums’ autobiographies reveals how these women convinced readers of their authenticity both as respectable women and as psychics. The author argues that these women’s autobiographies reflect an attempt to emulate feminine virtues even as their interpretation and performance of these virtues helped to transform prevailing gender stereotypes. She demonstrates that the social performance central to the production of women’s autobiography is uniquely complicated by Spiritualist ideology. Such complications reveal new information about how women represented themselves, gained agency, and renegotiated nineteenth-century gender roles. Elizabeth Schleber Lowry is Lecturer in Rhetoric and Composition at Arizona State University.
