Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Menace of Spiritualism It looks as if the penalty of trying to force the hand of God, and of lifting the veil to communicate with the Great Beyond was total loss of that childlike and clinging faith which is the priceless inheritance of the sons of God - Unless you become as a little child. Up to date in rare cases only have I been able to persuade necromancers to shake ofi Spiritistic practices and to return once more to the Church of their childhood. They tell you that they have actually seen, and that it is more blessed to have seen than to believe. When their choice lies between Christianity and Necromancy they choose the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritism the Origin of All Religions In presenting this little book to the public, I must ask the kind indulgence of the reader, for it has been the work Of my leisure hours; a recreation Of the mind from the dry details of law, which teaches us to deal with facts according to law, and to reason out its relations with the many conflicting, interests of mankind. In trying to trace out the origin of these laws customs and usages, it has led me far back into the night of time, when man emerged from the obscurity of barbarism. Like the explorer of some great river, as he ascends he beholds the stream branching off into many little rivers, and they grow less and less, until at last he finds its source in some far-off mountain, fed by the melting of the snows or springs that gush from out the granite rocks. So it is' with law and religion, they both come from the invisible source the mind of man. One tea'ches him his relations to his fellow-man, and the other to his Creator; one relates to his social nature, the other to his moral and spiritual nature. They are closely allied and have much to do with each-other, the religious status of a people having had much to do in shaping their government and civilization. Where a liberal religion has prevailed the laws have partaken of its nature and the people prospered and were happy; when illiberal if has tyrannized over man and made him a slave to caste and priesthood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it first appeared over 500 years ago, the Elucidation of Necromancy (Lucidarium artis Nigromantice) and the closely related Heptameron have become essential guides for individuals seeking to call on angels and other supernatural beings for help. Countless amulets and pendants have been made with its designs, and elements have repeatedly been adapted and incorporated into other manuals of ritual magic. In spite of this, neither a critical edition nor a translation has been previously published. In particular three manuscripts of Lucidarium have come to light recently, which provide a clearer and fuller ritual than the printed Heptameron. For example, they add critical instructions for making the seven angel sigils, which have become so widely known. Together they bring to life this important current of esoteric tradition, showing how it has been repeatedly adapted and used by different individuals for centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In classical antiquity, there was much interest in necromancy--the consultation of the dead for divination. People could seek knowledge from the dead by sleeping on tombs, visiting oracles, and attempting to reanimate corpses and skulls. Ranging over many of the lands in which Greek and Roman civilizations flourished, including Egypt, from the Greek archaic period through the late Roman empire, this book is the first comprehensive survey of the subject ever published in any language. Daniel Ogden surveys the places, performers, and techniques of necromancy as well as the reasons for turning to it. He investigates the cave-based sites of oracles of the dead at Heracleia Pontica and Tainaron, as well as the oracles at the Acheron and Avernus, which probably consisted of lakeside precincts. He argues that the Acheron oracle has been long misidentified, and considers in detail the traditions attached to each site. Readers meet the personnel--real or imagined--of ancient necromancy: ghosts, zombies, the earliest vampires, evocators, sorcerers, shamans, Persian magi, Chaldaeans, Egyptians, Roman emperors, and witches from Circe to Medea. Ogden explains the technologies used to evocate or reanimate the dead and to compel them to disgorge their secrets. He concludes by examining ancient beliefs about ghosts and their wisdom--beliefs that underpinned and justified the practice of necromancy. The first of its kind and filled with information, this volume will be of central importance to those interested in the rapidly expanding, inherently fascinating, and intellectually exciting subjects of ghosts and magic in antiquity.

Book excerpt: Exhuming the dreadful powers of the Underworld, Charnel Whispers explores the Maergzjiran Cabal's path of necromancy in a pathworking format designed to guide the Disciple through his or her rites from the basic composition of the death essence fully into becoming a Leiche (Lich); masterfully weaving aspects of death and undeath with ease, controlling the most intimate and destructive of energies known to mankind. Such topics covered are: what it means to be a Necromancer, sylvan necromancy, conjuring various agents of the Underworld, reanimating the dead, controlling the death essence, death curses, grave familiars, Spirits of Keraktes, construction and animation of the golem, and undead apotheosis. Written by the Master of the Tower of Atrophy, Charnel Whispers enlightens the soul in various means. Of these, the most potent and crucial is that of using "whispers." The Cabal's utilization of whispers almost fully removes the need for ritual components in all manner of rites. Using the most carnal and spiritually powerful parts of the Disciple's soul, all arts of necromancy are manifested before you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich is a manuscript that few scholars have noticed and that no one in modern times has treated with the seriousness it deserves. Forbidden Rites consists of an edition of this medieval Latin text with a full commentary, including detailed analysis of the text and its contents, discussion of the historical context, translation of representative sections of the text, and comparison with other necromantic texts of the late Middle Ages. The result is the most vivid and readable introduction to medieval magic now available. Like many medieval texts for the use of magicians, this handbook is a miscellany rather than a systematic treatise. It is exceptional, however, in the scope and variety of its contents—prayers and conjurations, rituals of sympathetic magic, procedures involving astral magic, a catalogue of spirits, lengthy ceremonies for consecrating a book of magic, and other materials. With more detail on particular experiments than the famous thirteenth-century Picatrix and more variety than the Thesaurus Necromantiae ascribed to Roger Bacon, the manual is one of the most interesting and important manuscripts of medieval magic that has yet come to light.
