Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality has emerged as a prominent theme in contemporary culture. It is seen in issues as diverse as Eastern philosophies and religious awakenings; its psychological impact is apparent in alternative medicine, Alcoholics Anonymous, and meditation. In their own ways, each of these has helped people get relief from the problems psychiatrists often treat. But the mental health profession has generally ignored these isues, focusing on specific target symptoms, from anxiety to heavy drinking. Their efforts rely increasingy on medications and brief therapies as they succumb to the chilling influence of managed care. This raises an important question: Can the spiritual and professional, two perspectives that seem different, be reconciled? This book is designed to provide an answer to this question. It draws on recent findings in psychology, neuroscience, and innovative therapies to understand how people in America and worldwide express their spiritual needs. It then shows how the mentally ill, substance abusers, and people troubled by a sense that something is missing in their lives can be helped by developing a sense of personal meaning, while still benefitting from contemporary therapy and medications. Finally, it examines shortcomings in both the biomedical and spiritually-oriented approaches. The book draws on clinical experience and recent research studies, including the author's work over thirty years. This is enhanced by case studies drawn from patients, mental health professionals, the lay public, and even cult members. All this is brought together to create a vivid understanding of how mental health treatment can be made more effective by giving meaning to people's lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Divine Science and Healing To understand the height and depth and breadth of Truth expressed in these pages, it is essential that the student place him or herself at one with Infinite Omnipresent Spirit, and then know that the teaching has been formulated from the consciousness and realization of this oneness. A consciousness of the way creative power expresses itself in creation is also a knowledge of the power expressed in the Spoken Word; of how the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us and is full of grace and truth. Divine Science teaches that re-creation or re-generation is simply a repetition of God creating or generating. This brings us back to original Truth and proves that man, his nature, form and all is sourced in God. In the science of numbers an understanding of principle secures correct solution of every problem and produces a true example. In Divine Science a knowledge of the nature and infinitude of the One All secures truthful conclusions, right thought, word and deed, and demonstrates health, peace, and satisfaction. He who is uncertain hesitates, and he who hesitates is like a wave of the sea, agitated and tossed by the wind. - James, 1:6. He is like a ship at sea in thick darkness, attempting to make safe harbor without guidance from a beacon light, and is at the mercy of wind and wave. All who hesitate will find true anchorage for soul and body in the Truth of Divine Science. It points the way to wholeness for all to enjoy who will partake. This book is not intended as light reading, to be read and laid aside, but, instead, should be thoroughly studied and applied, which will bring perfect illumination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has recently been much interest in the relationship between science and religion, and how they combine to give us a 'binocular' perspective on things. One important phenomenon which has been neglected in recent work is the concept of spiritual healing. This edited collection explores a variety of approaches to spiritual healing from different religious points of view, identifying both what it is and how it works. The authors also explore the biological and psychological processes, open to scientific enquiry, through which healing may be mediated. As such, this book indicates the central proposition that religious and scientific perspectives answer different questions about healing, and there is not necessarily any conflict between them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a thinker and a researcher, I have always been pulled deeper into the spiritual dimension of healing over my many years of clinical practice in the field of therapy. Had many questions about an inner power inside us as humans that is waiting to be called out. This power was simply our spiritual power. Adding spirituality to the counseling psychology process would lead to a greater sense of humility, compassion, and forgiveness, as well as divine healing. In this book, I will examine the developing role of spirituality in counseling psychology by analyzing several counseling programs that used the combination of spiritual and psychological/ mental counseling methods in counseling clients. In addition, this book asserts that this integrated approach to counseling psychology causes momentous changes in the human subconscious mind. Human souls co-exist with the human body, and so, must be nurtured. The psycho-spiritual approach touches on the spiritual part of man to sort things out. We shall uncover a hidden healing pattern throughout human history and the development of world faiths that demands humans to acknowledge that they are inadequate and insufficient without the spiritual link. Researchers have shown that those who are more spiritually linked and interested in connecting to their higher mind are healthier, less sad, and more confident than their counterparts who are not connected spiritually. Studying counseling psychology programs in depth was a wonderful way for me to prove that incorporating the spiritual aspect into the counseling process can help people achieve their ultimate full mental health by connecting them to the divine higher intelligence both consciously and subconsciously, and by learning that healing faith teaches us who we are and what our true meaning in this world is.
