Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 A bold approach to understanding the American evangelical experience from an anthropological and psychological perspective by one of the country's most prominent anthropologists. Through a series of intimate, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute, sensitive, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion, Luhrmann's book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise.

Book excerpt: A delightfully-written exploration of faith for those who are searching and for those who are settled What if we stopped trying to find the perfect church in the right Christian tradition and intentionally explored our faith with all our Christian brothers and sisters? Can Christians embrace God fully by exploring other faith traditions? In Not All Who Wander, we discover that we do indeed find Jesus in a church, and traces of him in our everyday lives as well. Not All Who Wander walks readers through the author’s faith journey, and how her experience with churches in a number of traditions has left her longing for more of Jesus than any one church offers. It also presents stories from other believers to give readers a sense of how alike, and different, our spiritual experiences can be. Rhoades has developed a passion for discovering all the ways we worship Jesus and invites readers to join her. With utter delight, she’s discovered no matter which traditions she worships with, Jesus meets her there.

Book excerpt: A fresh look at the earliest Christian movement reveals what made the new faith so compelling...and what we need to change today to make it so again. Once upon a time there was a version of the Christian faith that was practically irresistible. After all, what could be more so than the gospel that Jesus ushered in? Why, then, isn't it the same with Christianity today? Author and pastor Andy Stanley is deeply concerned with the present-day church and its future. He believes that many of the solutions to our issues can be found by investigating our roots. In Irresistible, Andy chronicles what made the early Jesus Movement so compelling, resilient, and irresistible by answering these questions: What did first-century Christians know that we don't—about God's Word, about their lives, about love? What did they do that we're not doing? What makes Christianity so resistible in today's culture? What needs to change in order to repeat the growth our faith had at its beginning? Many people who leave or disparage the faith cite reasons that have less to do with Jesus than with the conduct of his followers. It's time to hit pause and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and little chance of survival. It's time to embrace the version of faith that initiated—against all human odds—a chain of events resulting in the most significant and extensive cultural transformation the world has ever seen. This is a version of Christianity we must remember and re-embrace if we want to be salt and light in an increasingly savorless and dark world.

Book excerpt: Nearly every church is trying to help their congregants build relationships with others, grow as disciples, and/or engage in meaningful service through small groups. Many have argued that these small groups are the preferred vehicle for relationship building, disciple making, and membership assimilation in the local church, especially in large, multisite churches. Leading Small Groups That Thrive shows small group leaders, step by step, how to plan for, launch, build, sustain, and multiply highly effective, transformational, healthy small group experiences where people grow spiritually together. Based on a large-scale research study of small group pastors, leaders, and members, Leading Small Groups That Thrive gives church leaders both what they want--practical, straightforward, actual small group member voices and experiences, and compelling guidance on how to build transformational groups complemented with real-life examples and data of successful small groups--and what they need--substantial, challenging insights and a data-driven model grounded in the latest research on church small groups.

Book excerpt: Never before has a book been written that openly shares the true life-changing accounts of ordinary people who have heard God's Voice. When God Spoke to Me: The Inspiring Stories Of Ordinary People Who Have Received Divine Guidance and Wisdom shares seventy poignant stories written by men and women from around the world whose lives have changed in profound and unexpected ways as a result of hearing God's Voice. DavidPaul Doyle gathered these stories together to show the world that God speaks to all of us-in countless different ways-and that we all possess an intimate and often untapped connection with God, regardless of our personal struggles, our backgrounds or our faith. As you'll read below, these personal accounts are filled with such raw and captivating authenticity and emotion that they truly transcend religious and spiritual boundaries. This is the most soul-stirring collection of true stories ever assembled describing true-life experiences of hearing God's Voice. Hear what others have said about this book: "This inspiring book is a rich storehouse of stories of people who-in the midst of addiction, grief, anger, rebellion, loneliness, and many other situations that afflict us all-have heard the voice of a God who can restore and renew. These testimonies are the best evidence we can hope for that the Ancient of Days is still transforming lives in the 21st century!" Richard J. Mouw, President and Professor of Christian Philosophy, Fuller Theological Seminary "This book is delightful because it confirms that all of us can speak with the Divine. In these stories we hear regular people and how their lives shift because of their connection to God. It is very inspiring!" Mariel Hemingway, Actress, Author of Mariel's Kitchen "It seems that God does not check on either one's green card, photo ID or denominational membership before He speaks! Nothing seems cooked up or even unlikely about these testimonies from a range of people. As for the rest of us: are we really listening?" Harvey Cox, Harvard Professor of Divinity, Author of The Future of Faith When God Spoke to Me by DavidPaul Doyle "I loved When God Spoke to Me! I've now added it to my library of resources for developing sermons. These fantastic stories are powerful illustrations of the Truth principles of love, compassion, and forgiveness that I teach." Rev. Lane Williams, Unity Church of Vermont "Each and every story included in this book speaks to me, and of my experience. When we hear what we believe to be the voice of the God of our understanding, our hearts are forever changed. Your heart will never be the same after you read these stories, told by those who've heard and understood what a loving and merciful God has spoken directly to them." Lama K. T. The Spirit of God enlightens the eyes of our hearts. And in one self-authenticating sight, our minds are sure and our hearts are satisfied. Justified certainty and solid joy meet in the peculiar glory of God.

Most Christians know God speaks through His Word, but when He speaks through the spiritual senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, it can leave a person feeling crazy! In You Can Hear the Voice of God Through All Your Spiritual Senses, the author shares how she came to her senses in Christ in more ways than one! Have you ever dared to ask or believe that there might be more-now-on this side of Heaven? More that we don't have to wait to access? More of something on which you just can't quite put your finger? That's how Sallie Dawkins felt. She was no longer satisfied with living a complacent or powerless life as a Christian. She had a holy hunger for more. And the Lord answered that desire. A heart encounter with God in 2015 challenged Sallie's entire belief system. It was the beginning of the end of two-and-a-half decades of wavering faith and started her on a supernatural journey of discovery that rapidly transformed her life. Now a Christian Healing Evangelist, Sallie Dawkins is an expert at coaching born-again Christians in spiritual growth. When she realized others were asking the same questions she once asked, she was inspired to write The Awakening Christian Series. This series is for Christians seeking a closer relationship with God. In book one, You Can Hear the Voice of God Through All Your Spiritual Senses, the author shares with heartwarming honesty the lessons she's learned in her pursuit of growing in spiritual maturity. This book will help you to: - Discover your true identity as a child of God - Grow in awareness of God's presence as you navigate the supernatural awakening of your spiritual senses-and it doesn't mean you're crazy - Recognize the voice of God over the other voices vying for your attention - Grow in confident faith even after years of doubt and unbelief - Restore peace, clarity, and freedom in your life as you learn to harness negative thought patterns Teaching through testimony, the author uses Bible verses to illustrate her points and answers FAQs regarding the supernatural. The lessons Sallie shares about her journey of spiritual growth can benefit every born-again Christian. You'll find valuable resources and application questions at the end of each chapter to help you achieve victory in your spiritual walk. Sallie will show you how God brought healing to her own life, and how He can do it for you, too! You'll find this book inspiring, empowering, and encouraging as you build upon basic spiritual concepts for overcoming challenges and creating the supernatural life you desire. Applying the foundational truths presented in this book will help you experience God in fresh ways and gain confident faith. This book is a must-read for born-again Christians who desire to grow in spiritual maturity and the gifts of the Spirit to live a happy, purposeful life in Christ. Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nancy Tatom Ammerman examines the stories Americans tell of their everyday lives, from dinner table to office and shopping mall to doctor's office, about the things that matter most to them and the routines they take for granted, and the times and places where the everyday and ordinary meet the spiritual. In addition to interviews and observation, Ammerman bases her findings on a photo elicitation exercise and oral diaries, offering a window into the presence and absence of religion and spirituality in ordinary lives and in ordinary physical and social spaces. The stories come from a diverse array of ninety-five Americans — both conservative and liberal Protestants, African American Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Wiccans, and people who claim no religious or spiritual proclivities — across a range that stretches from committed religious believers to the spiritually neutral. Ammerman surveys how these people talk about what spirituality is, how they seek and find experiences they deem spiritual, and whether and how religious traditions and institutions are part of their spiritual lives.
