Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All people are travelers through life. Although we may take different approaches on our journey, we are all eventually headed for a destination. If you’re not thinking about the endpoint of your travels, now is the time to start. In Yes! Jesus Is the Only Way to Heaven, author Renee E. Woods shares the testimony of the life of a traveler whose journey would have ended in hell, from which there would be no escape. Thank God, that trip has been forever canceled; she has been rerouted and one day will enter into heaven, a destination that comes with everlasting benefits. Woods has a vital message to share: God gave humanity free choice to accept or reject His perfect will for salvation through the propitiation of Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of the Father. And the only infallible way to be saved from hell and enter heaven is to accept Jesus. Full of thought-provoking testimonies and scriptures, this study presents an inspirational exploration of faith and an invitation to all to embrace what God has to offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one million people from all walks of life have been uplifted and entertained by Heaven Bound, the folk drama that follows, through song and verse, the struggles between Satan and a band of pilgrims on their way down the path of glory that leads to the golden gates. Staged annually and without interruption for more than seventy years at Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Heaven Bound is perhaps the longest running black theater production. Here, a lifelong member of Big Bethel with many close ties to Heaven Bound recounts its lively history and conveys the enduring power and appeal of an Atlanta tradition that is as much a part of the city as Coca-Cola or Gone with the Wind.

Book Synopsis An Index to African-American Spirituals for the Solo Voice by : Kathleen A. Abromeit
Download or read book An Index to African-American Spirituals for the Solo Voice written by Kathleen A. Abromeit and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-01-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituals were an intrinsic part of the African-American plantation life and were sung at all important occasions and events. This volume is the first index of African-American spirituals to be published in more than half a century and will be an important research tool for scholars and students of African-American history and music. The first collection of slave songs appeared in 1843, without musical notation, in a series of three articles by a Methodist Church missionary identified simply as c. Collections that included musical notation began appearing in the 1850s. The earliest book-length collection of spirituals containing both lyrics and music was published in 1867 and entitled Slave Songs of the United States. Not since the 1930s, with the publication of the Index to Negro Spirituals by the Cleveland Public Library, has an index of spirituals been compiled. The spirituals are neatly organized in four indexes: a title index, first line index, alternate title index and a topical index that includes twenty major categories. A bibliography of indexed sources serves as a guide for further research.

Book Synopsis Woke Me Up This Morning by : Alan Young
Download or read book Woke Me Up This Morning written by Alan Young and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many studies of African-American gospel music spotlight history and style. This one, however, is focused mainly on grassroots makers and singers. Most of those included here are not stars. A few have received national recognition, but most are known only in their own home areas. Yet their collective stories presented in this book indicate that black gospel music is one of the most prevalent forms of contemporary American song. The author is a New Zealander who came to the South seeking authentic blues music. Instead, he found gospel to be the most pervasive, fundamental music in the contemporary African-American South. Blues, he concludes, has largely lost touch with its roots, while gospel continues to express authentic resources. Conducting interviews with singers and others in the gospel world of Tennessee and Mississippi, Young ascertains that gospel is firmly rooted in community life. This book includes his candid, widely varied conversations with a capella groups, with radio personalities, with preachers, and with soloists whose performances reveal the diversity of gospel styles. Major figures interviewed include the Spirit of Memphis Quartet and the Reverend Willie Morganfield, author and singer of the million-selling "What Is This?" who turned his back on fame in order to pastor a church in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.
