Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology is one of the most highly debated topics in the world today. It is perceived to be a subjective and controversial genre leading to strained and fractured relationships causing friendships to become adversarial. Most of the time these arguments are developed as a result of a person's ignorance on a subject or their personal religious bias that blinds them to the poignancy of the truth. The Heart of Circumcision introduces the subject of fleshly circumcision according to God's law and Spiritual circumcision according to God's law and the debate that surrounds them both. These are just a few of the topics that are discussed in this revealing book study: 1. What is circumcision? 2. Is circumcision for the Jew and Gentile required for salvation? 3. What is Spiritual and Literal circumcision? 4. What is God's law pertaining to circumcision? 5. Who was commanded to be circumcised and why? 6. What is the New Testament view on circumcision and to whom is circumcision applicable to in the New Testament? 7. What is the circumcision of the heart? 8. How does one circumcise their heart? 9. Are Worshippers still under God's Law or has it been nullified by the death of the Messiah? 10. Are there health benefits to circumcision for the man and even for his female partner? This book is filled with scriptural documentation and an in-depth exegete on each verse pertaining to the subject. It is reinforced with scholarly documentation and is designed to propel the reader into a comprehensive understanding of the subject so the reader will be able to gain the advantage in any theological discussion.

Book excerpt: The issue of female circumcision was catapulted into the mainstream after the publication of Alice Walker's novel Possessing the Secret of Joy in 1992. Although Walker garnered much support for her depiction and denunciation of the ritual, many others decried her almost missionary-like stance. Excising the Spirit explores this sensitive issue by analysing it from both inside and outside the ritual community. Each of the texts chosen offers a very specific insight into the complexities surrounding female circumcision and shows how writers grapple with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Live in the Spirit: Paul and the Spirit of God brings to light a fresh understanding of the Greek concept πνεῦμα (spirit) in Paul’s ethical teaching. Placing Paul and his mixed audience within the Hellenistic Jewish and Greek (philosophical) traditions of the ancient world, this book examines his new message concerning πνεῦμα’s primary function in the acquisition of virtues and avoidance of vices. Looking in detail at the various ways in which Paul views πνεῦμα in his seven undisputed letters, Naveros Córdova explores πνεῦμα’s development from Paul’s initial ethical reflections in his early letters to a more mature view in his later letters. Naveros Córdova argues that it is within these traditions, represented by major Hellenistic Jewish and Greco-Roman writers, that Paul construes the framework of his ethical teaching. Paul finds in the power of God’s πνεῦμα a new ethical alternative for his mixed audience to living lives pleasing to God outside the observance of the Mosaic Law. Naveros Córdova demonstrates how Paul draws upon Platonic (immaterial πνεῦμα) and Stoic (material πνεῦμα) language that would have been familiar to his hearers in the early Christian communities to create a persuasive understanding of ethical performance and to show that the moral life of the believers springs from that πνεῦμα received from God. In his efforts to highlight πνεῦμα’s central role in his ethics, Paul moves beyond both traditions by describing the “Christification” of πνεῦμα not only in Stoic terms, but also in Middle Platonic categories of the first century CE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, in the United States and the third world combined, 13.3 million boys and 2 million girls are circumcised. Whether because of perceived medical, cultural, or religious necessity, most of these parents feel they have no alternative but to allow their children to undergo this surgery. Sparking intense debate, the circumcision of children is a highly controversial and complex phenomenon that touches a variety of sociological areas, such as religious beliefs, identity issues, medical conceptualizations, fear, and superstition. The contributors to this volume comprise an international panel of experts in the fields of medicine, psychology, law, ethics, sociology, anthropology, history, theology, and politics. In 18 chapters they discuss the history of circumcision; document the physical and psychological consequences of circumcision; present the latest anatomical discoveries about the male prepuce; analyze the role of circumcision in various traditions; reveal the medical industry's investment in the practice; describe current legislative efforts to protect children from circumcision; and outline effective, culturally sensitive methods that are being implemented today to safeguard the human rights of at-risk children. For its insights into this troubling aspect of culture, Understanding Circumcision: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to a Multi-Dimensional Problem is a critically important contribution to the growing body of literature on this subject.

Book excerpt: 'Holy Spirit and Religious Experience' seeks to find out how far the centrality of the Holy Spirit in Christian experience during the earliest period of the church was maintained or diminished in the third to the fifth generations (ca. AD 90-200). Three themes are explored. First, the sense of encounter with the divine presence, the numinous, a sense of being caught up into the divine being or being overwhelmed by the One who is beyond us. Secondly, a sense of being illuminated in respect to the truth, given deeper understanding of God's purpose, whether for the individual or the congregation, or guided in decision-making. Thirdly, a sense of ethical empowerment, an awareness of being helped by divine power, assisted in a course of action or development of character, in grappling with temptation, or in the ultimate test of loyalty, martyrdom. This book is arranged geographically, from Syria and Asia Minor in the East to Rome and Gaul in the West, including North Africa and Egypt. Christian authors within these areas are examined chronologically, from the later New Testament writers through the second century to Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian of Carthage, for the evidence they supply. The variegated picture which emerges, it is contended, reflects second-century Christianity.

This booklet tells how the circumcision of man's heart is accomplished from within and from without to rid him of his ingratitude, which replaced his gratitude when he sinned.

Book excerpt: Many, many people who claim to be Christians have no idea of what the Bible really teaches on this subject, so for many it will challenge their claim. It will test their faith which is always a good thing for a professing Christian to do. How should we define what a Christian is and what a Christian is not? The true answers to these questions cannot come from any of us, no matter what we claim and no matter how we choose to live. They must come from the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genesis 12-50: A Narrative-Theological Commentary uses narrative criticism to bring out the theological aspects of the biblical story. While basing itself on the Christian belief that Christ is the goal of all Scripture, it nevertheless allows the Hebrew Bible to speak for itself and to show how its inner message may receive completion in Christ. Hence, it adopts what the author calls a "two-stage" hermeneutics. A particular contribution of this commentary is the comparison and confrontation of patristic and early rabbinic exegesis as Christians and Jews struggled over the same texts, using them to support their diverse beliefs. The discussion is geared towards the average educated reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From God's mouth to the hearts of His people - this is the function of the Bible and is the reason it is called The Word of God. "The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit is the chief means by which men are built up and established in the faith, after their conversion. It is able to cleanse them, sanctify them, to instruct them in righteousness, and to furnish them thoroughly for all good works (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) J.C. Ryle. After many years of anger against God, the Lord wonderfully restored the author to Himself and laid the burden of this ministry on his heart. Every weeksince April 2000TFTWs (Thoughts From The Word) have been sent via the internet to God's people throughout the world. Many similar thoughts may be found at www.onhisshoulders.com. The Bible "can show you the way which leads to heaven. It can teach you everything you need to know, point out everything you need to believe, and explain everything you need to do. It can show you what you are - a sinner. It can show you what God is - perfectly holy. It can show you the great river of pardon, peace, and grace - Jesus Christ" J.C. Ryle, 1816-1900, Bishop of Liverpool, whose picture is on the front cover. The thoughts contained in this volume are published with the sincere prayer that God will use them to refresh and encourage the souls of His people.
