Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritism the Origin of All Religions In presenting this little book to the public, I must ask the kind indulgence of the reader, for it has been the work Of my leisure hours; a recreation Of the mind from the dry details of law, which teaches us to deal with facts according to law, and to reason out its relations with the many conflicting, interests of mankind. In trying to trace out the origin of these laws customs and usages, it has led me far back into the night of time, when man emerged from the obscurity of barbarism. Like the explorer of some great river, as he ascends he beholds the stream branching off into many little rivers, and they grow less and less, until at last he finds its source in some far-off mountain, fed by the melting of the snows or springs that gush from out the granite rocks. So it is' with law and religion, they both come from the invisible source the mind of man. One tea'ches him his relations to his fellow-man, and the other to his Creator; one relates to his social nature, the other to his moral and spiritual nature. They are closely allied and have much to do with each-other, the religious status of a people having had much to do in shaping their government and civilization. Where a liberal religion has prevailed the laws have partaken of its nature and the people prospered and were happy; when illiberal if has tyrannized over man and made him a slave to caste and priesthood. So it is with law and religion, they both come from the invisible source - the mind of man. One teaches him his relations to his fellow-man, and the other to his Creator; one relates to his social nature, the other to his moral and spiritual nature. They are closely allied and have much to do with each other, the religious status of a people having had much to do in shaping their government and civilization. Where a liberal religion has prevailed the laws have partaken of its nature and the people prospered and were happy; when illiberal it has tyrannized over man and made him a slave to caste and priesthood. In all religions there are good moral precepts, and if man would live up to them he would be wiser and better, but his animal nature is so strong that it often tempts him to violate them; but they act upon and tend to restrain him. It is contended by some that man could not be governed without a religion. It makes but little difference what a man's religion is, if he be honest and will respect the rights of another. No one should say, "My religion is orthodox and yours is heterodox;" we should all be willing to let every one worship God in accordance with the dictates of his own conscience, for we are all in the fog and know but little of the life to come. We now and then catch a stray bit of evidence that goes to confirm us in the belief of the immortality of the soul. God has declared that In the last days perilous times Shall come, and men Shall give heed to seducing spirits. I am trying to reveal to you the character and plan of attack of these same Spirits. Surely in vain the net is spread in the Sight of any bird. The battle is on, and in View of its terrible nature and in the very face of such a fee, a spade is a Spade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fellowship of the Spirit Religion is any and all reaction of the spirit of man to the approach of God. What gives the New Testament its unique place in the history of religion is that it records the most universal approach which God has made to man, and also the beginning of the human reaction to that approach alike in thought and in conduct. It records the latter also from several different angles. And the concurrence of these two forms of response is of the highest importance. For it is evidence of the arrival of power. And the character and direction of the power attest its origin as of God. The name given to that power in the New Testament is the Spirit of God. Its Character and direction are ascertainable because it is also the Spirit of Christ, and Him we know as the Jesus of the Gospels. The characteristic feature of the Church of the New Testament is that it is the Church of the Spirit. The Spirit is at once its creative, and its normative force. As experienced by those who felt it, the coming of the Spirit may be described as an over whelming sense of sonship, and an overwhelming sense of brotherhood. The evidence of the New Testament provides material for the study of these two factors of the religious consciousness. And it accredits their reality by the testimony it contains to corresponding standards of ethical achievement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religions of Authority, and the Religion of the Spirit Tms volume forms a sequel to the work which the author published in 1897, under the title, Outlines of a Philosophy of Religion based upon Psychology and History. Two systems of theology still confront one another: the theology of authority and the theology of experience. They are characterised by methods radically opposed in the scientific development of religious ideas and Christian dogmas. To the solution of the question of method the present work is consecrated. At the present hour one method is dying and destined soon to disappear; the other is taking on ever more vigorous development, and is destined to triumph. New discoveries, new philosophies, new beliefs, new political and economic conditions and theories, all have their moral and theological aspects. It is, therefore, the function of Moral Theology to ap ply to every new phase of human activity, which has a moral bearing, the already established principles of morality, and to set forth such rules of conduct as may be applicable to this new phase in practical life. If Christians had tho/roughly believed the Bible and acceptedits revelations in this regard, it may be that Modern Spiritual ism would never have been born. Now it must be stated that the author lays no claim to any phase of mediumship; he is but an humble student of the truth, and as this little book is sent out in the interest of the truth, free from all spirit of contro vetsy, he has no fears as to the ultimate results, whatever may be the opinion of bigots who are wise in their own conceit of the subject of which this book treats. And I am sure that no fair-minded, no philosophic thinker, will dream of treating it with derision or contempt. Her writings on religion were famous in her day and still resonate right up to the present. This book was drawn and expanded from some talks Underhill gave in Oxford, in which she attempted to link psychology and spirituality. She also discusses the place of institutional religion and of spirituality in the context of wider society. As elsewhere in her writings she emphasises the wonder of incarnation and life. The Life of the Spirit and the Life of Today is certainly recommended for fans of Underhill, but any religious individual will find resonance in her writing and should certainly take the time to explore why she was so influential. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of Supernatural Conceptions and Development of Religions The knowledge of the advent of man and his sta tus in the universe wherein he found himself prior to the attainment of modern science, was derived from traditionary legends evolved from the vivid imagi nations oi the human brain attempting to interpret the history of his creation, and the purpose of his existence. It is apparent that those legends have a fictitious origin, although they were assumed to be divine revelations. There is a tendency in the hu man mind to retain its early impressions with great tenacity; and it is difficult, and often impossible, to unlearn the most illogical and preposterous falla cies that men have been taught as truths in their earlier life while they seize with avidity every pre tension to reveal a future life they have learned to believe in, but of which no man has any knowl edge or comprehension, except from the fabulous traditions of unknown writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion, and Other Essays With regard to the essay on Apollo and the Mouse, it is to be remembered that animals acquire sacredness in religion in many ways besides what they may inherit from totemism. The works of Mr. J. G. Frazer show that, among agricultural peoples, the Corn Spirit is recognised in a vast number of animal forms, which are prominent in agricultural magic and religion. Thus a sacred animal associated with a god, say the Pig with Demeter, is not necessarily a survival. Of a totem. That the indo-european peoples were once totemic cannot be certainly proved, though many facts point in that direction. When we first meet them in history they have reached a point in civilisation at which we could not expect to discover more than faint and dubious totemic traces.
