The first is the Ethics, rigorously set out in geometrical terms, with definitions, axioms, and theorems. In the Ethics, Spinoza takes the reader down the path of reason to an ultimate beatitude, a rational salvation, a kind of peace of mind attained through the true knowledge of God, oneself, and one's place in the world. The other is of a very different sort. The Tractatus theologico-politicus is set out in twenty chapters. It begins with a discussion of prophecy and revelation, followed by a detailed description of Scripture, and what we can learn from it, the message of scripture. And that message is to be obedient to God, and to love our neighbours as ourselves. Two books, two styles of argument, two very different paths to salvation, arguably two Gods and arguably two very different kinds of kinds of salvation at the end. But one author. The challenge is evident: how do these books fit together? One is about reason, the other about revelation, one is about personal salvation, the other more focused on how we live together. Spinoza's writing has always drawn strong reactions, both positive and negative: he was accepted by some as a kind of secular prophet offering us a guide to life, and rejected by others as a kind of atheist and heretic. One of the main objectives of the book is to show how early and how deeply Leibniz, Bayle, Arnauld, Henry More, Anne Conway, Richard Baxter, Robert Boyle, Henry Oldenburg, Pierre-Daniel Huet, Richard Simon, and Nicholas Steno, among many others, were affected by and led to wrestle with his principal ideas. There have been surprisingly few biographies of Spinoza, given his fundamental importance in intellectual history and history of philosophy, Bible criticism, and political thought. Jonathan I. Israel has written a biography which provides more detail and context about Spinoza's life, family, writings, circle of friends, highly unusual career and networking, and early reception than its predecessors. Weaving the circumstances of his life and thought into a detailed biography has also led to several notable instances of nuancing or revising our notions of how to interpret certain of his assertions and philosophical claims, and how to understand the complex international reaction to his work during his life-time and in the years immediately following his death.

La dottrina di Spinoza costituisce dunque uno sforzo potente per assoggettare la ragione alle cose, all’Essere com’è, anziché assoggettare o far dipendere le cose dalla ragione o spirito: proprio il contrario di Kant e dell’idealismo. Non vi è una ragione sopra le cose, le cose non sorgono da una ragione, ma da una cieca Sostanza senza intelletto, né volontà, né fini; questa negazione della teleologia è radicale negazione del deismo e insieme del razionalismo.” Giuseppe Rensi (1871-1941) fu filosofo e avvocato. Fin da giovane s’interessò di politica iscrivendosi al Partito socialista. Nel 1898 partecipò ai moti milanesi e, per sfuggire alla condanna seguita alla cruenta repressione del generale Beccaris, si rifugiò in Svizzera. Nel 1908 rientrò in Italia dove iniziò la carriera di avvocato e ricoprì la cattedra di Filosofia morale all’università di Genova. La crisi sopraggiunta a seguito della Prima guerra mondiale inclinò il suo pensiero verso posizioni scettiche; la sua riflessione è caratterizzata da forti tinte pessimistiche e ateistiche. Brevemente incuriosito dal fascismo al suo esordio ne divenne uno dei maggiori oppositori quando il fascismo rivelò la sua vera natura; tra i firmatari del Manifesto degli intellettuali antifascisti, venne perciò espulso dall’Università dal regime. Arrestato assieme alla moglie, solo grazie a un falso articolo dell’amico Emanuele Sella che ne annunciava la morte, fu rimesso in libertà dal duce che nel frattempo temeva la cattiva immagine all’estero data da questo arresto. Venne quindi “confinato” presso il centro bibliografico dell’Università di Genova per compilare schede sulla storia ligure. Tuttavia egli continuò le sue pubblicazioni. Nel 1941 venne ricoverato, ma i bombardamenti su Genova obbligarono a rinviare un intervento chirurgico decretando la sua morte. Durante il funerale i pochi discepoli che seguivano il feretro vennero schedati e dispersi dai fascisti. L’edizione di Spinoza che presentiamo comprende entrambe le versioni, quella del 1929 e quella del 1941.

Preoccupied by the question of why and how Jews should rule themselves in the absence of a biblical or messianic sovereign state or king, they forged a creative synthesis of insights from early modern Christian politics and Jewish law and traditions to assess and argue over their formidable communal government.
