Book Synopsis Gyrodynamics and Its Engineering Applications by : Ronald N. Arnold
Download or read book Gyrodynamics and Its Engineering Applications written by Ronald N. Arnold and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gyrodynamics and Its Engineering Applications deals with the engineering applications of gyrodynamics in a manner that stresses the physical concepts. Topics covered range from the kinematics of rigid bodies to frames of reference, along with moments and products of inertia. Gyro-verticals and the gyrodynamics of machines are also considered. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with a historical background on gyroscopes and an introduction to vectors, the kinematics of a particle, and rotating systems. The emphasis is on certain fundamental ideas governing the movement of bodies in three dimensions. Motion with respect to moving axes is discussed in detail, with particular attention to the intangible Coriolis acceleration. Subsequent chapters focus on the inertial characteristics of bodies and certain dynamical theorems; the motion of a free body and of a symmetrical gyroscope under gravity; gyroscopic vibration absorbers and stabilizers; the gyro-compass; suspensions for gyroscopes; gyro-verticals; and rate and integrating gyroscopes. The book also discusses inertial navigation as well as the whirling of shafts and aircraft gyrodynamics. This monograph is intended primarily for engineers, but should also prove valuable to university teachers, research workers, and those who encounter gyroscopic problems.

Book excerpt: A description of the inertial technology used for guidance, control, and navigation, discussing in detail the principles, operation, and design of sensors, gyroscopes, and accelerometers, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of particular systems. An engineer with long practical experience in the field, the author elucidates such recent developments as fibre-optic gyroscopes, solid-state accelerometers, and the global positioning system. This will be of interest to researchers and practising engineers involved in systems engineering, aeronautics, space research, and navigation on both land and sea.
Book Synopsis Theory of Gyroscopic Effects for Rotating Objects by : Ryspek Usubamatov
Download or read book Theory of Gyroscopic Effects for Rotating Objects written by Ryspek Usubamatov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights an analytical solution for the dynamics of axially symmetric rotating objects. It also presents the theory of gyroscopic effects, explaining their physics and using mathematical models of Euler’s form for the motion of movable spinning objects to demonstrate these effects. The major themes and approaches are represented by the spinning disc and the action of the system of interrelated inertial torques generated by the centrifugal, common inertial, Coriolis forces, as well as the change in their angular momentum. These torques constitute the fundamental principles of the mechanical gyroscope theory that can be used for any rotating objects, like rings, cones, spheres, paraboloids and propellers of different designs. Lastly, the mathematical models for the gyroscopic effects are validated by practical tests.

Excerpt: ...that so long as the axle lies North and South and is horizontal, it is not affected by the action of gravity. If for any reason it is displaced from the meridian (but not so far as a West-East position), the rotation of the earth still causes a dip, and therefore the gravity couple comes into play, restoring CN to the North-South position; while at the same time a couple is produced by air-currents which eliminates dip as CN approaches the meridian. A mathematical discussion of the forces called into play is given in Appendix V. CHAPTER VI. STEADY MOTION OF A TOP. 75. The student is reminded at the commencement of this chapter that, when a solid body is under consideration, (i) Angular velocity about any line means total angular velocity--not relative to some moving plane, unless this is expressly stated. (ii) Angular velocity about a line which is moving means (total) angular velocity about the line fixed in space, with which the moving line happens to be coinciding at the instant in question. 76. In the preceding chapter the bodies whose rotation we have discussed have been symmetrical bodies, as, for example, a fly-wheel; and all the rotations have been about an axis of symmetry, i.e. the axle. If the axis were not an axis of symmetry, an angular velocity about this axis would in general involve angular momentum (about this axis, and also) about the two axes perpendicular to it, as is shown in the next article. In this chapter we propose to discuss the equations of motion of an ordinary spinning top, in which case it is clear that only the axle of the top is an axis of symmetry, and any other axis is not. But we shall see in Art. 79 that, since the top is a solid of revolution, any axis perpendicular to the axle of the top is the same...

This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatment of the Theory of Spinning Tops and Gyroscopic Motion The object of this book is to bring within the range of the abler Mathematicians at our Public Schools and of First Year undergraduates at the Universities, a subject which has hitherto been considered too difficult for any but the more advanced students in Mathematics, while even they have in many cases failed to derive more pleasure from the study of spinning tops than is contained in submitting the problem to the action of a complicated piece of Mathematical machinery which automatically, though unintelligently, turns out the correct result. In this attempt to present an elementary, and at the same time a scientific view of the subject, I have expanded several of the suggestive ideas put forward in Dynamics of Rotation by Professor Worthington, to whom is due a large debt of thanks for much liberal criticism and assistance in the earlier chapters, and for permission to borrow his article on Brennan's Monorail. In my other critics I have been similarly fortunate. Dr. Besant, Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, read and commented on several chapters in their first edition of manuscript; and in dedicating this volume to him I have endeavoured to express the interest in the subject, and the love of it, which I owe to his inspiring teaching. Professor Hopkinson of the Engineering Laboratory at Cambridge has also read certain portions, while much assistance has been rendered by my friend and late colleague Mr. W. M. Page, Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge, with whom I have spent many pleasant hours discussing various points. Lastly, the whole work has been carefully criticised by Mr. G. Bistwistle, Fellow and Principal Mathematical Lecturer of Pembroke College, Cambridge, to whom my sincerest thanks are due for much time devoted to the book and for many valuable suggestions. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating many fundamental concepts of physics and engineering through the working principles of popular science toys is inexpensive, quickly reaching the senses and inspiring a better learning. The systematic way of setting theoretical model equations for the toys provides a remarkable experience in constructing model equations for physical and engineering systems.Given that most science toys are based on the principles of physics, and to cater to the needs of graduate and master-level programme students in physics and engineering, the present book covers more than 40 wide ranging popular toys. For each toy various features are presented including history, construction, working principle, theoretical model, a solved problem and 5-10 exercises.A course on The Physics of Toys can be designed based on the proposed book to be taught as a full course at graduate and master-level and even to students who have never been exposed to physics. Further, the features of the toys covered in this book can be used to illustrate various concepts and principles in different branches of physics and engineering.
