Book excerpt: The interaction of circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses with commercial vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) was studied using a pump-probe configuration in connection with an autocorrelation setup for time-resolving anticipated polarization changes in the VCSEL output. In addition, extensive theoretical modeling was performed to gain greater insights into the physical bases for output polarization in VCSELs. The objective of these efforts was to determine if VCSEL output polarization could be switched on a picosecond time scale, and if the polarization of multiple elements in a VCSEL array could be externally controlled and 'pinned' to a particular desired orientation. The theoretical modeling was completed. Experimental verification of the model could not be carried out because the VCSELs available at the time did not have high enough output power.

Book excerpt: The huge progress which has been achieved in the field is covered here, in the first comprehensive monograph on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) since eight years. Apart from chapters reviewing the research field and the laser fundamentals, there are comprehensive updates on red and blue emitting VCSELs, telecommunication VCSELs, optical transceivers, and parallel-optical links for computer interconnects. Entirely new contributions are made to the fields of vectorial three-dimensional optical modeling, single-mode VCSELs, polarization control, polarization dynamics, very-high-speed design, high-power emission, use of high-contrast gratings, GaInNAsSb long-wavelength VCSELs, optical video links, VCSELs for optical mice and sensing, as well as VCSEL-based laser printing. The book appeals to researchers, optical engineers and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we first show our experimental results on polarization instabilities in quantum dot (QD) lasers with vertical cavity, so called VCSELs. Their characteristics are different from what is typically observed in their QW counterparts: light that is linearly polarized close to lasing threshold becomes elliptically polarized as current is increased and then a wide region of polarization mode hopping between nonorthogonal, elliptically polarized modes sets on. Within this region the average dwell time decreases by eight orders of magnitude from seconds to nanoseconds. To our best knowledge this is the first observation of such a diversified dynamics of polarization mode hopping in a single VCSEL. We have also carried out theoretical studies of optically injected QD lasers accounting for the intradot carrier dynamics through the higher-energy excited states. We show that experimentally observed excitable pulses are complemented by self-pulsations resulting from the so-called bottleneck phenomenon. Finally, we have theoretically investigated optically injected QD laser lasing simultaneously from the ground and excited states. We show that although the external light is injected to the ground state mode alone, modulation of the relaxation time induced by injected signal can provide a gain switching mechanism leading to generation of picosecond pulses from the excited state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse mode control of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is achieved by spatially filtered optical feedback. The spatial filter consisted of a pinhole, either 42 pm or 81 pm, in the 5.8x magnified VCSEL image plane of a confocal lens arrangement. The pinhole was translated to map out the voltage drop across the VCSEL from spatially-selective feedback. For low injection currents, spatially filtered feedback enabled single fundamental mode operation due to higher-order mode suppression by appropriately locating the pinhole. For higher injection currents with five laser modes, spatial selection of feedback enabled control of the relative mode intensities and wavelengths. The maximum increase in mode intensity achieved was 1.8x for the 42 pm pinhole and 2.-1 . for the 81 m pinhole. The maximum frequency shift achieved was -2.7 GHz and -7.1 GHz with the 42 p.m and the 81 pm pinholes. The spatially-selective optical feedback produced long-lived changes to the VCSEL even after the feedback was blocked - results for two separate trials where the recovery time was 38 minutes are presented (although results varied for different bias and feedback conditions).

Book excerpt: This reference book provides a fully integrated novel approach to the development of high-power, single-transverse mode, edge-emitting diode lasers by addressing the complementary topics of device engineering, reliability engineering and device diagnostics in the same book, and thus closes the gap in the current book literature. Diode laser fundamentals are discussed, followed by an elaborate discussion of problem-oriented design guidelines and techniques, and by a systematic treatment of the origins of laser degradation and a thorough exploration of the engineering means to enhance the optical strength of the laser. Stability criteria of critical laser characteristics and key laser robustness factors are discussed along with clear design considerations in the context of reliability engineering approaches and models, and typical programs for reliability tests and laser product qualifications. Novel, advanced diagnostic methods are reviewed to discuss, for the first time in detail in book literature, performance- and reliability-impacting factors such as temperature, stress and material instabilities. Further key features include: practical design guidelines that consider also reliability related effects, key laser robustness factors, basic laser fabrication and packaging issues; detailed discussion of diagnostic investigations of diode lasers, the fundamentals of the applied approaches and techniques, many of them pioneered by the author to be fit-for-purpose and novel in the application; systematic insight into laser degradation modes such as catastrophic optical damage, and a wide range of technologies to increase the optical strength of diode lasers; coverage of basic concepts and techniques of laser reliability engineering with details on a standard commercial high power laser reliability test program. Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics reflects the extensive expertise of the author in the diode laser field both as a top scientific researcher as well as a key developer of high-power highly reliable devices. With invaluable practical advice, this new reference book is suited to practising researchers in diode laser technologies, and to postgraduate engineering students.
