Book excerpt: Billie Ridell liked to dabble in the occult mainly because he was an outcast with his classmates at school. Billie stood about four feet nine inches tall with jet-black hair and a lisp when he would talk. Billie always dreamed about being Class President one day and even his ultimate dream was to be the President of the United States of America but that was stretching it a bit too far. Billie never stood up for himself. He would just suppress his feelings but we all know that's not healthy to bottle up your anger. As Billie was finishing out his senior year at Ragsdale High School, Billie’s classmates invited him to a Graduation party at Darren's house as a peace offering for all the bad deeds that were done to him during his school years. Billie had no idea this wasn't a peace offering, it was just another trick that would cause Billie to want to get even with his classmates. His classmates didn't know they were about to unleash an evil force that would be the last trick that they would ever play on anyone again. Billie was so excited to go to the party and have a good time and put all the pranks behind him. Boy was he in for a big surprise. Billie showed up right on time dressed in his cap and gown and ready to party before graduation which would begin in about three hours. As Billie knocked on the door he could hear the laughter and music that was coming from inside the house, but the laughter was about the prank that the classmates would be playing on Billie. The door opened and Billie stepped inside ready to party. Everyone was so nice to Billie and telling him how nice he looked and congratulating him on graduating in the top ten of his class. Darren the main prankster of the whole bunch took Billie over to get some punch and cake to eat. The punch that Billie was about to drink was laced with enough sleeping pills to knock him out for a solid hour so the classmates could carry on the prank.

Book excerpt: Keynote An accessible and beautifully illustrated introduction to the Books of the Dead the collections of magical spells on papyrus that the Egyptians believed would help them safely reach their afterlife. Sales points A concise introduction to the perennially fascinating subject of ancient Egyptian attitudes to death and the dead The British Museum holds an unequalled collection of Book of the Dead manuscripts on papyri New photography captures the exquisite detail of the painted vignettes that accompany the spells Published to accompany a major exhibition at the British Museum, 4 November 2010 6 March 2011 Description For most ancient Egyptians, life on earth was short. But death was not an end; it was merely the entering of a new phase of being. They believed that the afterlife was a real place, but various obstacles, torments and judgements had to be overcome to reach it. To ensure a safe passage, wealthy Egyptians took with them specially commissioned compilations of spells, written on papyrus rolls. There was a large number of spells to choose from: spells for obtaining air, food and water; for transforming your body into another form, such a bird or lotus; for warding off hostile snakes and crocodiles; for preventing your heart from disclosing all your sins; for not permitting others to steal your body parts and soul; for not doing work in the realm of the dead, and so on. Through these fragile papyrus texts and vignettes and a selection of other funerary objects, this book reveals what the ancient Egyptians believed lay between life and the afterlife. The Author John H. Taylor is a curator at the British Museum specializing in ancient Egyptian funerary archaeology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Ceremonial Magic - Arthur Edward Waite - The Book of Ceremonial Magic by Arthur Edward Waite was originally called The Book of Black Magic and of Pacts. It was first published in a limited run in 1898, and distributed more widely under the title The Book of Ceremonial Magic in 1910Writing in the late 19th century, Waite had studiously researched many obscure tenets of magic. Much of this book concerns the obscure occult tomes, which the author condenses and presents to readers in this single volume. Waite's studies uncover a variety of knowledge; there are thousands of spells and rituals that date back to Medieval times and have a theological basis. Many exist to ward off devils, witches or other evil phenomena, while others seek to conjure beneficent spirits. Another intriguing aspect of ceremonial magic is the ability to form pacts with supernatural beings. These rituals in themselves act to compel supernatural entities to assist a human being; none of them involve offering one's soul. However, many require one or more materials and ingredients to begin - grave dust or a certain plant for instance. Waite disapproves of those who reprint and sell the older magical grimoires for two principle reasons. Firstly the quality of the English translations is low, often proscribing completely different instructions and requisites for a given ritual than was given in the original source text. Secondly these books make no distinction between 'white' or 'black' magic; such lack of organization makes it difficult for the modern reader to distinguish the practices. Over 150 symbols, seals, insignia, charts and other illustrations populate this text, each offering insight into how the magician correctly undertakes his tasks. Waite includes many scripts that the performer of magic must read out loud as he attempts to conjure, summon or communicate with forces from other planes of existence.

Although condemned by mainstream churches, this folk saint's supernatural powers appeal to millions of Latin Americans and immigrants in the U.S. Devotees believe the Bony Lady (as she is affectionately called) to be the fastest and most effective miracle worker, and as such, her statuettes and paraphernalia now outsell those of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Saint Jude, two other giants of Mexican religiosity. In particular, Chesnut shows Santa Muerte has become the patron saint of drug traffickers, playing an important role as protector of peddlers of crystal meth and marijuana; DEA agents and Mexican police often find her altars in the safe houses of drug smugglers. Yet Saint Death plays other important roles: she is a supernatural healer, love doctor, money-maker, lawyer, and angel of death. She has become without doubt one of the most popular and powerful saints on both the Mexican and American religious landscapes.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Lush with secrets, magic, and a past that won’t stay where it belongs, this novel is (quite fittingly) spellbinding.”—JODI PICOULT, author of Wish You Were Here A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: She Reads Emery Blackwood’s life changed forever the night her best friend was found dead and the love of her life, August Salt, was accused of murdering her. Years later, she is doing what her teenage self swore she never would: living a quiet existence on the misty, remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family’s business, Blackwood’s Tea Shoppe Herbal Tonics & Tea Leaf Readings. But when the island, rooted in folklore and magic, begins to show signs of strange happenings, Emery knows that something is coming. The morning she wakes to find that every single tree on Saoirse has turned color in a single night, August returns for the first time in fourteen years and unearths the past that the town has tried desperately to forget. August knows he is not welcome on Saiorse, not after the night everything changed. As a fire raged on at the Salt family orchard, Lily Morgan was found dead in the dark woods, shaking the bedrock of their tight-knit community and branding August a murderer. When he returns to bury his mother’s ashes, he must confront the people who turned their backs on him and face the one wound from his past that has never healed—Emery. But the town has more than one reason to want August gone, and the emergence of deep betrayals and hidden promises spanning generations threaten to reveal the truth behind Lily’s mysterious death once and for all.
