Download or read book Spelling written by Rebecca Treiman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: are the findings that Wade-Woolley and Siegel obtained when they studied children for whom English was a second language. Although the second language speakers performed more poorly than the native speakers on tests of syntactic knowledge, phoneme deletion, and pseudoword repetition, the second language speakers were not worse than the native speakers in spelling. These results suggest that, even if children have not fully mastered the sound system of their second language, they need not be disadvantaged in spelling it. The findings appear to pose a challenge to views of reading and spelling that place primary emphasis on phonology. The Muter and Snowling study, together with the Nunes, Bryant and Bindman study, broadens the focus by examining aspects of spelling beyond phonology. Muter and Snow ling, in their longitudinal study of British school children, examined the degree to which various linguistic skills measured between the ages of 4 and 6 predicted spelling ability at age 9. The results support the idea that phonological skill plays an important role in spelling development, and further suggest that awareness of phonemes is more strongly related to spelling ability than awareness of rimes. In addition, grammatical awareness appears to predict spelling skill. Children who are able to reflect on meaning relationships among words may be in a position to understand how this information is represented in English spelling.
Download or read book Spelling Journal written by and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Logic of English Spelling Journal is a practical, student-created reference guide. This tool may be used with The Logic of English Curriculum or it may be used by anyone who wants to create a reference of difficult-to-spell words which include sounds that have multiple options for spelling in English. The fact that many sounds in English are spelled in multiple ways is one of the most difficult aspects for mastering English spelling. For example: do we use an AI, AY, EIGH, A, A with a silent E, or an EA to spell the long /a/ sound? Essentials provides a unique approach to teaching spelling that includes not only learning the sound(s) of the phonograms but learning the options for how to spell each sound, where each option is used, which spellings are rare, and which spellings must be memorized. The Spelling Journal is an ideal student created reference to track this vital information and to categorize words according to the sounds heard within the word.
Book Synopsis Uncovering the Logic of English: A Common-Sense Solution to America's Literacy Crisis by : Denise Eide
Download or read book Uncovering the Logic of English: A Common-Sense Solution to America's Literacy Crisis written by Denise Eide and published by Logic of English, Inc. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "English is so illogical!" It is generally believed that English is a language of exceptions. For many, learning to spell and read is frustrating. For some, it is impossible... especially for the 29% of Americans who are functionally illiterate. But what if the problem is not the language itself, but the rules we were taught? What if we could see the complexity of English as a powerful tool rather than a hindrance? --Denise Eide Uncovering the Logic of English challenges the notion that English is illogical by systematically explaining English spelling and answering questions like "Why is there a silent final E in have, large, and house?" and "Why is discussion spelled with -sion rather than -tion?" With easy-to-read examples and anecdotes, this book describes: - the phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words - how English words are formed and how this knowledge can revolutionize vocabulary development - how understanding the reasons behind English spelling prevents students from needing to guess The author's inspiring commentary makes a compelling case that understanding the logic of English could transform literacy education and help solve America's literacy crisis. Thorough and filled with the latest linguistic and reading research, Uncovering the Logic of English demonstrates why this systematic approach should be as foundational to our education as 1+1=2.

Book Synopsis American English Spelling by : D. W. Cummings
Download or read book American English Spelling written by D. W. Cummings and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1988-05 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the English language as it is spelled in America, D. W. Cummings demonstrates that behind the apparent disorder of spelling in American English lies a self-regulating and self-reorganizing system that is responsive to four kinds of imperative: phonetic, semantic, etymological, and systemic. Cummings offers a systematic theory of orthography and applies this theory to the American English vocabulary with numerous examples. Cummings also describes the explication of written words into their elements, particles, and processes, and he sets out the tactical and procedural rules that control the distribution and sequencing of vowels and consonants. In the largest section of the book, he provides an exhaustive description of the major and minor correspondences between the sounds of American English words and their spellings. An essential reference work, American English Spelling moves beyond questions of how words are spelled to an understanding of why they are spelled as they are.

Book excerpt: Spelling K-8 meets the needs of schools and districts that want to put systematic teaching in place without compromising the principles of constructivist learning. Recognizing the professional expertise of classroom teachers, the authors consistently urge teachers to consider the suggested plan in relation to their children's spelling needs. Children are actively engaged in spelling explorations, being guided by their teachers, forming generalizations that reflect their current understanding about how written English works. Specific suggestions are also offered for children whose first language is not English. Spelling K-8 addresses the issues that administrators and parents are concerned about - especially phonics and learning high-frequency words - and offers teachers a wealth of strategies and resources to draw on. Spelling K-8 assists teachers in:understanding current beliefs about teaching and learning and means of translating these into classroom practice;implementing specific types of spelling investigations, such as sounds, spelling patterns or suffixes, by clearly outlining the general process involved in spelling explorations;identifying the possible spelling focuses for children in each grade level, taking into consideration their needs and the explorations they have been introduced to in previous years;relating the teaching of spelling to reading and writing experiences in a variety of curriculum areas;knowing the generalizations children need to learn to enable them to understand how written English works. Spelling K-8 will help you plan the teaching of spelling at a whole-school level and at each grade level.
Book Synopsis Spelling Morphology by : Dorit Diskin Ravid
Download or read book Spelling Morphology written by Dorit Diskin Ravid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Hebrew is a highly synthetic Semitic language—its lexicon is rich in morphemes. This volume supplies the first in-depth psycholinguistic analysis of the interaction between morphological knowledge and spelling in Hebrew. It also examines how far this model can be applied to other languages. Anchored to a connectionist, cognitive, cross-linguistic and typological framework, the study accords with today’s perception of spelling as being much more than a mere technical skill. Contemporary psycholinguistic literature views spelling as a window on what people know about words and their structure. The strong correlation between orthographies and morphological units makes linking consistent grammatical and lexical representation and spelling units in speaker-writers a key research goal. Hebrew’s wealth of morphological structures, reflected in its written form, promotes morphological perception and strategies in those who speak and write it, adding vitality and relevance to this work.
