Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of technologies affects the demands of industries at the present time. Thus, automatic control has played a vital role in the advance of engineering and science. In today's industries, control of DC motors is a common practice. Therefore, implementation of DC motor controller is required. There are many types of controller that can be used to implement the elegant and effective output. One of them is by using a PI controller. PI stands for Proportional and Integral Controllers which are designed to eliminate the need for continuous operator attention thus provide automatic control to the system. Cruise control in a car and a house thermostat are common examples of how controllers are used to automatically adjust some variable to hold the measurement (or process variable) at the set-point. This project is focusing on implementing PI controller to control speed of a dc motor. The overall project is divided into two parts. The first part is concern on the simulation using MATLAB simulink where the dc motor is modeled and PI controller is tuned using Ziegler-Nichols rules and software tuning. The second part is implementing the simulation. This part is divided into another two parts, Graphical User Interface (GUI) development and hardware interfacing. GUI is built using National Instrument LabVIEW software with implementation of PI controller. An oscilloscope also had been build there. Hardware interfacing part is built with Mitsumi dc mini-motors, M31E-1 Series, speed sensor and analog to digital converter, DAC8032. As the result, PI controller is capable to control the speed of dc motor followed the result from simulation.

The main objective is to design and develop GUI software for speed control experiment, where PID controllers' design approaches has been applied. The controllers have been designed and the system is simulated using MATLAB to analyze their initial performance. The computer is connected to DC Motor via data acquisition card (DAQ Card) and Visual Basic is used to conduct the experiment. Field-testing is implemented to compare the results between the original and modified system with the PID controller. Finally, the performance of the system is analyzed and validation is done in terms of time response, robustness and percentage of error.

When used in speed applications, speed feedback control the DC motor's speed or confirms that the motor is rotating at the desired speed. To maintain the speed, it requires the speed feedback at all times. The objective of this project is to use the algorithm of Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller to control the speed of the DC motor using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) implementation. The used of PLC in this project will help to reduce complexity and easy to troubleshoot. The model of PLC which is used in this project is OMRON (CQM1H-CPU51) and the program for this controller system is in ladder diagram (CX programmer). The PID is implemented in the PLC program so that the system has a better response and less error. Finally, analysis of the response is made after the PID is implemented into the system.

Book excerpt: The ultimate goal of this paper is to control the angular speed, in a model of a DC motor driving an inertial load has the angular speed, as the output and applied voltage, as the input, by varying the applied voltage using different control strategies for comparison purpose. The comparison is made between the proportional controller, integral controller, proportional and integral controller, phase lag compensator, derivative controller, lead integral compensator, lead lag compensator, PID controller and the linear quadratic tracker design based on the optimal control theory. It has been realized that the design based on the linear quadratic tracker will give the best steady state and transient system behavior, mainly because, the other compensator designs are mostly based on trial and error while the linear quadratic tracker design is based on the optimal control theory which can give best dynamic performance for the controlled system.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: In this paper we describe a technical system for DC motor speed control. The speed of DC motor is controlled using Neural Network Based Model Reference and Predictive controllers with the use of Matlab/Simulink. The analysis of the DC motor is done with and without input side Torque disturbance input and the simulation results obtained by comparing the desired and actual speed of the DC motor using random reference and sinusoidal speed inputs for the DC motor with Model Reference and Predictive controllers. The DC motor with Model Reference controller shows almost the actual speed is the same as the desired speed with a good performance than the DC motor with Predictive controller for the system with and without input side disturbance. Finally the comparative simulation result prove the effectiveness of the DC motor with Model Reference controller.

Accuracy and the dynamic responses are better in a closed loop system. In the closed loop system, acceleration and the deceleration of the motor can be controlled according to the requirement. In order to regulate drives automatically, the controlled variables are measured. A tachogenerator is used for this purpose. The output of the tachogenerators is compared with a preset reference voltage. The differences between these two signals are fed as an actuating signal to control the elements of the system. Control amplifiers are used as both comparators and amplifiers. As a small change in the voltage can cause a large change in the motor current and lead to a particular drive control feature. There are two closed paths in the dc control scheme. One is the outer speed control loop and the other is the inner current control loop. Both the loops are controlled with the help of P-I controllers having their own gains and the time constants according to the requirement of the system. The output of the speed P-I controller which is the function of the speed error is used to command for current P-I controller and compared with armature current. The current P-I controller output control the triggering circuit of the converter. The armature current tends to increase to a large value when the motor is accelerating. A current limit can be obtained in this system by limiting the maximum current command voltage. If the motor speed drops below the set point, the resulting error signal causes the gate pulse generator to advance the firing pulses, and increase the rectifier output voltage. Consequently the speed rises to the desired level.

Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to design a simulation model of Brushless dc motor and to control its speed at different values of load torques. In this light, new control schemes should be devised for a better solution of a non linear system. Recently, work has been started toward the development of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based intelligent controllers. The ANN has several key features that make it highly suitable for BLDCM speed applications. The ANN based PID controller is used for the speed control of BLDCM at different values of load torque and its comparison is done with the conventional controllers like PID and PI controllers.

Book excerpt: Motor controller is an equipment that been use to determine the movement of an electric motor in a desired way. The speed control of motor is very difficult to be implemented by using conventional control techniques, as it quires a very complex mathematical model. The purpose of this project is to describe the research of PID controller design based on programmable logic controller (PLC) in order to control the speed of the motor. The model of the PLC that has been used in this project is OMRON CJIG-CPU42P where this PLC has a build in loop control that can be made the ladder diagram quite simple using function block in CX-process tools. In this project, the system without controller shows that is an open loop control. Hence, when break is applied there is no feedback for the system to increase the voltage in order for the motor to maintain the desired speed output. Compare by using the PID controller, when the breaking is applied there is a feedback for the system to increase the voltage to get the desired output. Analysis done and it shows that the Proportional-Integral controller with fine tuning is much better performance compare to the Proportional, Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller with and without fine tuning and without controller in the system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast majority of automatic controllers used to compensate industrial processes are of PI or PID type. This book comprehensively compiles, using a unified notation, tuning rules for these controllers proposed over the last seven decades (1935OCo2005). The tuning rules are carefully categorized and application information about each rule is given. The book discusses controller architecture and process modeling issues, as well as the performance and robustness of loops compensated with PI or PID controllers. This unique publication brings together in an easy-to-use format material previously published in a large number of papers and books. This wholly revised second edition extends the presentation of PI and PID controller tuning rules, for single variable processes with time delays, to include additional rules compiled since the first edition was published in 2003. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (17 KB). Contents: Controller Architecture; Tuning Rules for PI Controllers; Tuning Rules for PID Controllers; Performance and Robustness Issues in the Compensation of FOLPD Processes with PI and PID Controllers. Readership: Control engineering researchers in academia and industry with an interest in PID control and control engineering practitioners using PID controllers. The book also serves as a reference for postgraduate and undergraduate students."
