Address Before The Ohio Wesleyan University At DelaWare, Ohio, June 20, 1893. Mr. President, Members Of The Board Of Trustees, MemBers Of The Faculty, Ladies And Gentlemen: Rutherford Birchard Hayes, nineteenth President of the United States, born in this city on October 4,1822, was a great and good man--great in all that was good; good in all that was great. He was a fortunate man; fortunate in his ancestry; fortunate in his noble mother; fortunate in all the influences of a Christian home; fortunate in his early training and higher education; fortunate in the happiest of marriages; fortunate in his professional experience, in his service as a volunteer soldier, in the uncertain paths of politics; fortunate in every public and private relation. He was fortunate, and he deserved to be. He improved his opportunities; he accepted every responsibility as a sacred trust for which true account must be rendered. He received his earliest education in the Delaware public schools. From here he went to the Academy at Norwalk, Ohio, and later to the preparatory school at Middletown, Conn., to prepare for college. He entered Kenyon College at Gambier, Ohio, in the fall of 1838. He was a close student, one of the best debaters in the literary societies of that college, and at his graduation was probably one of the most popular men of his class--that of 1842. He graduated at the head of his class and delivered a valedictory which even now is remembered as one of the best of such productions. After leaving Kenyon, young Hayes studied law with Sparrow and Matthews at Columbus, and completed his professional studies at Harvard Law School in January, 1845. He entered the practice of his profession in May, 1845, at Lower Sandusky, or...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses of William McKinley: From His Election to Congress to the Present Time In this volume are presented sixty-five of the speeches and addresses of Hon. William McKinlby, Governor of Ohio, late Representative in Congress, and one of the prominent public men of the country. It has been compiled by Mr. Joseph P.Smith, Librarian of the Ohio State Library, and revised by Mr. McKinley himself, so far as the opportunities of a busy public life would admit. The selections have been made from several hundred speeches, delivered in all parts of the country, and indicate the wide range of topics on which Mr. McKinley has spoken. Especial attention is called to the care and ability with which he has discussed the tariff question. All his more important tariff speeches are here collected in a single volume, and it is believed that his arguments in advocacy of the doctrine of protection will prove peculiarly acceptable at this time, when the matter of adhering to or abandoning our present economic policy is the principal question at issue between the two great political parties of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed historian Robert Merry resurrects the presidential reputation of William McKinley in a “measured, insightful biography that seeks to set the record straight…a deft character study of a president” (The New York Times Book Review) whose low place in the presidential rankings does not reflect the stamp he put on America’s future role in the world. Republican President William McKinley transformed America during his two terms as president (1897 – 1901). Although he does not register large in either public memory or in historians’ rankings, in this revealing account, Robert W. Merry offers “a fresh twist on the old tale…a valuable education on where America has been and, possibly, where it is going” (The National Review). McKinley settled decades of monetary controversy by taking the country to a strict gold standard; in the Spanish-American war he kicked Spain out of the Caribbean and liberated Cuba from Spain; in the Pacific he acquired Hawaii and the Philippines; he developed the doctrine of “fair trade”; forced the “Open Door” to China; forged our “special relationship” with Great Britain. He expanded executive power and managed public opinion through his quiet manipulation of the press. McKinley paved the way for the bold and flamboyant leadership of his famous successor, Teddy Roosevelt, who built on his accomplishments (and got credit for them). Merry writes movingly about McKinley’s admirable personal life, from his simple Midwestern upbringing to his Civil War heroism to his brave comportment just moments before his death by assassination. “As this splendid revisionist narrative makes plain….The presidency is no job for a political amateur. Character counts, sometimes even more than charisma” (The Wall Street Journal). Lively, definitive, and eye-opening, President McKinley resurrects this overlooked president and places him squarely on the list of one of the most important.

"This is by all odds the best study of the coming of the war, the war itself, and the aftermath of the conflict."—Paul S. Holbo, University of Oregon. "According to the author, McKinley's enhancement of presidential power and his personal leadership in war-making and diplomacy made him 'the first truly modern president.' This thesis is carefully developed and effectively argued. . . . The book's brevity, readability, and interpretive insights make it attractive for the classroom. . . . Faced in the general election by the well-respected and highly touted orator William Jennings Bryan, Republicans adopted their "Front Porch Campaign." Thousands of citizens from across the country were brought to McKinley's home in Canton for a handshake and a few words. Hanna arranged for this $3.5 million campaign to be paid for by big business, with oil baron John D. Rockefeller writing the largest check. McKinley's military service and his support among veterans were significant factors in his campaign. He became the first presidential candidate in a generation to win a majority of the popular vote." "This extensively revised and expanded edition of H. Wayne Morgan's William McKinley and His America will be an important resource for historians and scholars."--BOOK JACKET.
