Download or read book The Grammar of Profit written by Andrea Finkelstein and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between the prevailing concept of "just profit" and contemporary reactions to the Sixteenth-Century Price Revolution by tracing the evolving meaning of "profit" in religious, political, and social discourse. Using the period's own macrocosmic-microcosmic analogy, the book examines family correspondence, wills, and court cases in addition to formal tracts to move outward from issues of spiritual profit to family values, employment relationships, and church and state. While England's experience provides a focal point, extensive use of continental sources reveals the problem's broader context. This study should prove particularly useful to those wishing to knit together the now particularized and separated strands of early modern economic, political, social, and religious history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speculi Britanniae Pars: An Historical and Chorographical Description of the County of Essex, by John Norden, 1594 The particulars of the life of John Norden, as far as we are acquainted with them, are few, and even those, as stated by his biographers, not all certain. Anthony a Wood assures us he was educated at Oxford, and takes him for the same person who was author of no fewer than fifteen devotional pieces, some of which went through many, and one, The Pensive Man's Practice, 120, 1591, through forty editions. Granger thought these books in divinity belonged to another person, possibly his father. The dates, however, as enumerated by Wood, exactly correspond with the period over which the topographical productions extend; and we have no actual knowledge of any other writer of both his names. To the genealogist, Fines are especially helpful in giving the names of many estate owners' wives and families. The volume contains nearly 3,000 separate property transactions and 7,000 references to persons, with data on estates, large and small, in every Essex Parish and many in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. There are numerous items concerning commons, openfields, dovecotes, minor place-names, fisheries, sheepwalks, mills, parks and warrens, and an extensive subject index.

This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late medieval and early modern Europe, textual and visual records of disaster and mass death allow us to encounter the intense emotions generated through the religious, providential and apocalyptic frameworks that provided these events with meaning. This collection brings together historians, art historians, and literary specialists in a cross-disciplinary collection shaped by new developments in the history of emotions. It offers a rich range of analytical frameworks and case studies, from the emotional language of divine providence to individual and communal experiences of disaster. Geographically wide-ranging, the collection also analyses many different sorts of media: from letters and diaries to broadsheets and paintings. Through these and other historical records, the contributors examine how communities and individuals experienced, responded to, recorded and managed the emotional dynamics and trauma created by dramatic events like massacres, floods, fires, earthquakes and plagues.
