Download or read book Lens Implantation written by P. Leonard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book are busy practical men with no particular barrow to push. The text of the book includes a comprehensive review of all aspects of intraocular lens surgery including details of the design, optics chem istry and sterilization of intraocular lenses. Its value is enhanced by excellent illustrations and extensive tabulated references to the litera ture. Accounts of patient acceptability are balanced against candid discus sion of complications and their management. The historical introduction recalls that in the early stages of develop ment of the art, over a period of 10 years, two dozen different lens designs were proposed, most claiming elimination of problems which had arisen with their predecessors. Eventually nearly all disappeared from the scene. In an age where every cataract surgeon has to determine a personal position on intraocular lens implantation the author's reflections on these matters are timely. Intraocular lenses are neither a miracle nor a menace, provided that personal decisions and preferences are carefully thought through and put into practice upon the basis of known facts and not upon the basis of fickle fashion and fad. This book provides a background upon which the reader can eva luate in his own mind the validity of information provided by the manufacturers of various lens designs.

Book Synopsis Lens Epithelium and Posterior Capsular Opacification by : Shizuya Saika
Download or read book Lens Epithelium and Posterior Capsular Opacification written by Shizuya Saika and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to summarize the current knowledge of the cell biology of lens epithelial cells in relation to and in the development of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). PCO remains the most common long-term complication of modern cataract surgery, occurring months or years after cataract surgery, unlike most other complications that tend to arise during or soon after the procedure. Opacification of the posterior capsule appears to be linked to lens epithelial cells that are left behind in the eye during cataract removal. These cells proliferate, migrate across the posterior lens capsule, and undergo changes that result in fibrous or pearl-type opacities in the capsule. The first section of the text explains the molecular mechanism and biology of lens epithelial cells that lead to the incidence of PCO. In the second part, in addition to a description of the mechanism and pathological condition of PCO, surgical methods and devices for preventing PCO are discussed in detail. Lens Epithelium and Capsular Opacification will benefit not only young clinical residents and junior researchers, but also established faculty in the clinical or basic academic field.

Download or read book GLUED IOL written by Amar Agarwal and published by JP Medical Ltd. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implanting an intraocular lens (IOL) in a patient without adequate support for a posterior chamber (behind the iris of the lens) IOL is a complex procedure for ophthalmic surgeons. In the past, if an anterior chamber IOL was not possible, the only surgical option was suturing a posterior IOL. This book discusses the new technique of ‘glued intrascleral haptic fixation of a posterior chamber IOL’ (Glued IOL). Beginning with an introduction, the following chapters describe different surgical processes for glued IOL, for both common and less common conditions. The final section examines complications and imaging, and compares the techniques and results of glued IOLs and sutured IOLs. With contributions from recognised ophthalmic surgeons in the UK, USA, Canada and Asia, this book features more than 460 colour photos and illustrations. A DVD demonstrating glued IOL surgical procedures is included. Key points Guide to glued IOL for ophthalmic surgeons Covers different procedures for both common and less common conditions Discusses complications and imaging and compares glued and sutured IOLs Includes DVD of glued IOL surgical procedures Authored by internationally recognised ophthalmic surgeons

Book Synopsis Assessing Ocular Toxicology in Laboratory Animals by : Andrea B Weir
Download or read book Assessing Ocular Toxicology in Laboratory Animals written by Andrea B Weir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocular toxicity is routinely assessed in toxicology studies conducted for regulatory purposes. Ocular anatomy and physiology and the assessment of ocular toxicity itself can be challenging to scientists involved in the safety assessment of pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other agents. Anatomical and physiological differences between species can impact the nature of ocular effects observed following intended or unintended exposure of ocular tissues to xenobiotics. Ocular Toxicity in Laboratory Animals provides a concise reference addressing ocular anatomy and physiology across species that will enhance the design and interpretation of toxicology studies conducted for regulatory purposes. The book provides an overview of routine and advanced techniques that are used to assess ocular toxicity including slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, electrophysiology and imaging methods for the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Additionally, the book defines the regulatory expectations for pharmaceuticals intended to treat ocular diseases and for other non-pharmaceutical regulated chemicals. With contributions from experts in the field, Ocular Toxicity in Laboratory Animals is an authoritative, accessible guide for toxicologists and other scientists involved in conducting toxicology studies for regulatory purposes and/or reviewing data from such studies.
