Book excerpt: Free radicals, weakly bound van der Waals complexes, and metal and semiconductor clusters are characterized by photodetachment of the corresponding negative ions using slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI), a recently developed, high-resolution (2-3 cm-1) variant of negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. The SEVI spectrum of a negative ion yields the electron affinity of the neutral, term values for excited states accessible via one-photon detachment, and accurate vibrational frequencies for the ground and accessible excited states. The combination of high energy resolution and the simultaneous measurement of photoelectron angular distributions provides a sensitive probe of adiabatic potential energy surfaces and vibronic coupling in neutral species formed by photodetachment. The SEVI experiments are complemented by infrared studies of size-selected negative ions and clusters using the free electron laser FELIX.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research concerns the study of the spectroscopy and excited state dynamics of a number of transient molecules containing either sulfur or oxygen. The identification and study of sulfur species which are analogs of important oxygen-containing combustion intermediates is important to our understanding of reactive intermediates. The oxygen-containing species chosen for study are new systems whose electronic spectra have not previously been identified. The major experimental technique used in this work was pyrolysis jet spectroscopy. Since many of the species have not been previously studied by laser techniques, much effort was devoted to determining methods for producing and observing them. We have been very successful in a number of cases and have developed some further experimental techniques.

Book excerpt: This book is a stop-gap contribution to the science and technology of carbon plasmas and carbon vapors. It strives to cover two strongly related fields: the molecular quantum theory of carbon plasmas and carbon nanostructures; and the molecular and atomic spectroscopy of such plasmas and vapors. These two fields of research are strongly intertwined and thus reinforce one another.Even though the use of carbon nanostructures is increasing by the day and their practical uses are emerging, there is no modern review on carbon plasmas, especially from molecular theoretical and spectroscopic viewpoints. The importance of the present book is therefore great from both educational and practical aspects. This review might be the first step towards bringing such textbooks into existence for university education. Similarly, for applied and engineering works in carbon nanostructures, the book provides a theoretical salient point for technologists in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of laser-based sources of ultrafast infrared pulses has extended the study of very fast molecular dynamics to the observation of processes manifested through their effects on the vibrations of molecules. In addition, non-linear infrared spectroscopic techniques make it possible to examine intra- and intermolecular interactions and how such interactions evolve on very fast time scales, but also in some instances on very slow time scales. Ultrafast Infrared Vibrational Spectroscopy is an advanced overview of the field of ultrafast infrared vibrational spectroscopy based on the scientific research of the leading figures in the field. The book discusses experimental and theoretical topics reflecting the latest accomplishments and understanding of ultrafast infrared vibrational spectroscopy. Each chapter provides background, details of methods, and explication of a topic of current research interest. Experimental and theoretical studies cover topics as diverse as the dynamics of water and the dynamics and structure of biological molecules. Methods covered include vibrational echo chemical exchange spectroscopy, IR-Raman spectroscopy, time resolved sum frequency generation, and 2D IR spectroscopy. Edited by a recognized leader in the field and with contributions from top researchers, including experimentalists and theoreticians, this book presents the latest research methods and results. It will serve as an excellent resource for those new to the field, experts in the field, and individuals who want to gain an understanding of particular methods and research topics.

Book excerpt: Spectroscopy, structure, and energy transfer of transient radicals in combustion Period: 4/15/04-12/31/06 PI: Hai-Lung Dai, Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104 [email protected] A newly developed approach based on nanosecond time resolved Fourier Transform IR Emission Spectroscopy (TR-FTIRES) has been applied to the investigation of the spectroscopy and structure of unknown transient radicals that are important in combustion processes. Several radicals including deuterated-vinyl, cyanooxomethyl (OCCN) and ketenyl (HCCO) whose vibrational structure has not been determined have been examined. The transient radical species is produced with high vibrational excitation through UV photolysis of a precursor molecule. The IR emission from the highly excited species through its IR active vibrational modes is detected with fast time resolution using the TR-FTIR technique. A new two-dimensional cross-spectra correlation technique has been developed for analyzing the time-resolved FTIR emission spectra. This analysis reveals the common set of emission bands from the same target radical in the emission spectra obtained using different precursors. The spectroscopic approach also allows the reactions of the excited radical and the photolysis reaction of the precursor molecules to be characterized. All these information are fundamentally important to the understanding of chemical dynamics of radicals as well as the combustion processes.

Book excerpt: This book contains the formal lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on. the Advances in Chemical Reaction Dynamics. The meeting convened at the city of Iraklion, Crete, Greece on 25 August 1985 and continued to 7 September 1985. The material presented describes the fundamental and recent advances in experimental and theoretical aspects of, reaction dynamics. A large section is devoted to electronically excited states, ionic species, and free radicals, relevant to chemical sys tems. In addition recent advances in gas phase polymerization, formation of clusters, and energy release processes in energetic materials were presented. Selected papers deal with topics such as the dynamics of electric field effects in low polar solutions, high electric field perturbations and relaxation of dipole equilibria, correlation in picosecond/laser pulse scattering, and applications to fast reaction dynamics. Picosecond transient Raman spectroscopy which has been used for the elucidation of reaction dynamics and structural changes occurring during the course of ultrafast chemical reactions; propagation of turbulent flames and detonations in gaseous· energetic systems are also discussed in some detail. In addition a large portion of the program was devoted to current experimental and theoretical studies of the structure of the transition state as inferred from product state distributions; translational energy release in the photodissociation of aromatic molecules; intramolecu lar and intraionic dynamic processes.
