Book excerpt: Israel is a small country. With about 9,000,000 citizens, it falls somewhere between Belgium and Denmark in terms of population. Remarkably, though, it is hard to meet anyone who has not heard about Israel. And everyone seems to have an opinion about this tiny piece of land and its people.For dozens of years, I used to travel, visiting altogether over 90 countries. Those were business trips, and I had a great opportunity to meet lots of different people and talk to them. And it was always the same - people somehow felt that they knew and understood Israel. Indeed, in the West, most of the people are Christians, Muslims and Jews, and the knowledge of the Holy Land comes from the Holy Books. At the same time, understanding is created by the media, which is always looking for breaking news and hottest stories.Following those meetings, I often had a chance to invite my partners and customers to visit my country. And then I became their tour guide, taking them wherever we had time to go. Business travelers don't usually have time for extensive excursions, so I had to limit our travels to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Galilee, the Dead Sea, and some of the other, most popular places. And every time, I heard the same - how different everything was from whatever people could imagine. The usual stereotypes simply did not work, and every place they visited was a great surprise.And so, after a long international business career, I've finally decided to make guiding a profession. And now, instead of me trotting the world, people come to Israel to meet me, and I take them around the country. And the old miracle works again and again - after the tour, and sometimes even almost at its beginning, people usually tell me - "this is not a country which I expected to meet".Why is this so? First, Israel is much more modern from what people usually think the Holy Land would be. But at the same time, the country manages to keep huge green areas, reserved for nature reserves and National Parks.And, indeed, history and nature are everywhere. Altogether, there are over 250 nature reserves and National Parks in the country. Needless to say, an "average tourist" who comes to Israel for a week or two has no time to see even a small part of all that.To become a tour guide in Israel, one has to study for over two years, a few times a week. And every year, more in-depth dedicated studies are requested to achieve the Tour Guide license. Every year, new excavations uncover new layers of history and bring more surprises. Sometimes, basic things, which seemed to be obvious, become obsolete, and new horizons are opened. It is enough to dig underground parking in Jerusalem and find the Ancient Greek Citadel, Acra, which many people thought was just a legend. Or start building a new road in Judea Hills to find Khirbet Qeiyafa - a town dating back to King David times. But even those places, which seem to be well-known, usually hide some fascinating stories. And this is why I've decided to put some of these stories together into this book. I've tried to keep it short and simple, as this is not a scholarly composition book. This is also definitely not a guide book either, as I've tried to avoid those "must hear" clichés about "must-see" places. For that, there are thousands of good and detailed Travelers Guide books.Instead, I want to tell you some short stories of great places in this fascinating country. My target is to bring the inner levels of each great site's background and open a "secret door" for my readers to the mystics of the Holy Land and to ensure that you feel at home there.I've also added lots of photos, most of them I took myself, to bring a real vision of these places.
