Book excerpt: For the most part, SPECIMEN DAYS lacks the somewhat rambling style of DEMOCRATIC VISTAS. For this reason it is easier to read than most of Whitman's prose. Composed primarily of a loosely kept diary, the work is a series of the poet's observations about his youth, the war years, and the last period of his life spent in Camden, New Jersey. Aside from containing some of the few examples of Whitman's beliefs stated clearly and laconically, it is also a worthy historical account of one facet of the war years, with occasional portraits of important political and literary figures of the time. But the most obvious value of the essay is in the portrait of Whitman himself. While it is by no means a complete account of all the events in the poet's life, it does give a vivid picture of his background, some moving reports of his reactions to the war, and his real enjoyment of nature during his later years. The organization of SPECIMEN DAYS is purely chronological. At his home Whitman had a collection of papers he had written during his career, and at a publisher's request he went there to "reel out diary-scraps and memoranda, just as they are, large or small, one after another, into print-pages, and let the melange's lackings and wants of connection take care of themselves." Whitman stated that if his book accomplished nothing more, he would at least "send out the most wayward, spontaneous, fragmentary book ever printed."

Robertson shows how modern election campaigning was born. Robertson discusses early political cartoons and electioneering speeches as he examines the role of each nation's press in assimilating masses of new voters into the political system. Even a decade after the American Revolution, the authors shows, British and American political culture had much in common. On both sides of the Atlantic, electioneering in the 1790s was confined mostly to male elites, and published speeches shared a characteristically Neoclassical rhetoric. As voting rights were expanded, however, politicians sought a more effective medium and style for communicating with less-educated audiences. Comparing changes in the modes of in the two countries, Robertson reconstructs the transformation of campaign rhetoric into forms that incorporated the oral culture of the stump speech as well as elite print culture. By the end of the nineteenth century, the press had become the primary medium for initiating, persuading, and sustaining loyal partisan audiences. In Britain and America, millions of men participated in a democratic political culture that spoke their language, played to their prejudices, and courted their approval. Book excerpt: Many leading American thinkers in the nineteenth century, who accepted the premises of Emersonian transcendentalism, valued the basic concept of pantheism: that God inheres in nature and in all things, and that a person could achieve a sense of belonging she or he lacked in society by seeking a oneness with all of nature. As Richard Hardack shows, however, writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville conceived of nature as everything "Other"--other than the white male Protestant culture of which they were a part. This conception of nature, then, became racialized, and the divine became associated with African American and Native American identities, as well as with femininity. In "Not Altogether Human," Hardack reevaluates transcendentalism in the context of nineteenth-century concerns about individual and national racial identity. Elucidating the influence of pantheism, Hardack draws on an array of canonical and unfamiliar materials to remap the boundaries of what has long been viewed as white male transcendental discourse. This book significantly revises notions of what transcendentalism and pantheism mean and how they relate to each other. Hardack's close analysis of pantheism and its influence on major works and lesser known writing of the nineteenth century opens up a new perspective on American culture during this key moment in the country's history.
