Voids formed from bleeding of grout may result in loss of a protective environment that may lead to corrosion of prestressing steel. This test method is a tool to evaluate the bleed stability of a grout under static pressure and can be used to prequalify grout materials or for quality control.

What are the expected variations of a precast concrete panel? What is required to successfully detail finish materials on masonry? Updating and expanding on its popular first edition, the Handbook of Construction Tolerances, Second Edition remains the only comprehensive reference to the thousands of industry standard tolerances for the manufacture, fabrication, and installation of construction materials and components-- including all-important accumulated dimensional variations. Covering new materials and techniques developed since the book was first published, the Second Edition of this easy-to-use reference features: * More than 100 drawings illustrating the tolerance concepts * New sections on measuring compliance with tolerance standards; right-of-way construction; autoclaved aerated concrete; tilt-up concrete panels; interior stone wall cladding; structural insulated panels; decorative architectural glass; laminated architectural flat glass and bent glass * New guidelines on how to incorporate tolerance requirements in drawings and specifications * New information on how to apply tolerance information during contract administration With the Handbook, architects, engineers, contractors, interior designers, lawyers, and others involved in the construction industry will be armed with the information they need to design and detail more accurately, write better specifications, establish normal practice and standards of care, supervise construction, settle worksite disputes, and save time and money at every stage of building.

This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PCI-124-18 The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) first issued a manual for the design for fire resistance of precast/prestressed concrete in 1977. A second edition was prepared in 1989 and a third edition in 2011. The recommended design procedures in those three editions were based on fire test data and reports for precast/prestressed concrete dating back to the 1960s. Little has changed since then in fundamental design for fire resistance. While fire resistance is discussed in other publications as "calculated" fire resis- tance, those provisions have generally been prescriptive. That is, tables of information are used to select concrete mass or protection for steel. Since the first edition of the PCI manual, rational design, which is truly a fire resistance calculation procedure, has been demonstrated. Though not a standard, the first edi- tion of the International Building Code in 2000 referenced the procedures in the PCI fire design manual as being acceptable for prestressed concrete slabs not covered elsewhere. With the 2014 designation of PCI as an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Accredited Stan- dards Developer, the material for fire resistance of precast and precast, prestressed concrete was deemed important enough to the precast concrete industry that the newest edition of the provisions would be developed in a consensus standard form. Thus, the design procedures would be referenced in the 2021 International Building Code as a standard developed through an ANSI consensus process.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this publication is to show how precast concrete may be mixed in combination with other structural materials to maximise overall building performance. The other materials are: cast insitu concrete, reinforced and post-tensioned, structural steelwork, timber and glue-laminated timber, masonry in brickwork and blockwork, glass and glazing. The aim is to provide a companion volume to composite Floor Structures [FIP, 1998] and to show some of the many other ways that precast concrete can be used to advantage with other materials. The term mixed precast construction is used to describe these other combinations. The intention is not to discuss design calculations - that is for a future 'fib Guide to good practice'. Instead, the bulletin is meant as a 'State-of-art' publication showing photographs, sketches and details of precast concrete with other materials. There are no design equations, although some technical information on how to combine the materials, e.g. bearings, connections, tolerances, thermal and shrinkage effects, etc., is included if appropriate. Thus, the document focuses on the use of mixed construction in multistorey buildings, offices, housing, grandstands, parking garages, and industrial warehouses, etc. i. e. on precast concrete as the main construction material and looks at the manner in which other materials can be integrated. Chapter by chapter the strengths and weakness of each material studied are assessed as part of the total building design. In some cases it is obvious that the load carrying performance of one material outweighs another. In other cases aspects such as thermal, fire, vibration, fatigue, creep, acoustic, seismic and visual characteristics, and the geographical local availability of that material, may be critical. A world-wide survey, presented in Table 1.1, found that precast concrete is a universal building material, but mixed construction is limited mostly to developed countries where structural steelwork and types of timber, such as glue-laminated timber, is readily available. In addition there may be design, detailing, production, transportation, erection and maintenance limitations, which do or do not favour mixed construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The industry-standard guide to designing well-performing buildings Architectural Detailing systematically describes the principles by which good architectural details are designed. Principles are explained in brief, and backed by extensive illustrations that show you how to design details that will not leak water or air, will control the flow of heat and water vapor, will adjust to all kinds of movement, and will be easy to construct. This new third edition has been updated to conform to International Building Code 2012, and incorporates current knowledge about new material and construction technology. Sustainable design issues are integrated where relevant, and the discussion includes reviews of recent built works that extract underlying principles that can be the basis for new patterns or the alteration and addition to existing patterns. Regulatory topics are primarily focused on the US, but touch on other jurisdictions and geographic settings to give you a well-rounded perspective of the art and science of architectural detailing. In guiding a design from idea to reality, architects design a set of details that show how a structure will be put together. Good details are correct, complete, and provide accurate information to a wide variety of users. By demonstrating the use of detail patterns, this book teaches you how to design a building that will perform as well as you intend. Integrate appropriate detailing into your designs Learn the latest in materials, assemblies, and construction methods Incorporate sustainable design principles and current building codes Design buildings that perform well, age gracefully, and look great Architects understand that aesthetics are only a small fraction of good design, and that stability and functionality require a deep understanding of how things come together. Architectural Detailing helps you bring it all together with a well fleshed-out design that communicates accurately at all levels of the construction process.
