Book excerpt: This publication serves as a protocol to be used by both manufacturers and users for the specification and acceptance testing of radiotherapy treatment planning systems (RTPSs). Recommendations are provided in this report for specific tests to be performed at the manufacturing facility and acceptance tests to be performed at the radiotherapy hospital. The protocol uses the IEC 62083 standard as its basis for defining the specifications and acceptance tests. The analysis of algorithm site testing does not only test for consistency with the factory type tests but will also help the user at the hospital to understand how well the algorithm works and what kind of results should be expected

Book excerpt: This publication serves as a useful guide for medical physicists in radiation oncology, radiation oncologists and radiation therapists, ensuring accuracy, safety and quality in radiation therapy. Record and verify systems (RVSs) were developed to reduce the risk of treatment errors in radiation oncology. These have recently evolved into complete radiotherapy information management systems that interface with imaging systems, treatment planning computers, and treatment delivery systems. To function as intended, RVSs must be subject to a comprehensive quality assurance (QA) program. This publication provides practical guidelines for a comprehensive QA programme and its implementation. It describes the QA program, including acceptance tests and the commissioning process that should be used in conjunction with the installation of a new RVS. It is also highlighted that some of the tests performed at installation must be repeated regularly as part of the periodic quality control checks.

Book excerpt: This book provides a first comprehensive summary of the basic principles, instrumentation, methods, and clinical applications of three-dimensional dosimetry in modern radiation therapy treatment. The presentation reflects the major growth in the field as a result of the widespread use of more sophisticated radiotherapy approaches such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy and proton therapy, which require new 3D dosimetric techniques to determine very accurately the dose distribution. It is intended as an essential guide for those involved in the design and implementation of new treatment technology and its application in advanced radiation therapy, and will enable these readers to select the most suitable equipment and methods for their application. Chapters include numerical data, examples, and case studies.
