Book excerpt: Studies have shown that addition of cationic groups to a segmented polyurethane can dramatically change physical attributes such as solution behavior, mechanical strength, and viscoelastic properties. However, the specific interactions responsible for these changes are not well understood. A series of polyether polyurethane cationomers were synthesized using chain extenders with pendant trialkylammonium groups. The morphology and properties of the cationomers were studied as a function of ion-related variables using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), tensile testing, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Ion content affected phase separation and mechanical properties the most; the alkyl group length was of secondary importance; and the type of neutralizing anion had essentially no effect. Further, a lamellar microstructure typical of conventional polyurethanes was evident, with no apparent aggregation of ionic groups.

Book excerpt: This volume describes in detail the mechanisms of the diisocyanates and polyols polyaddition process as well as its kinetic and process aspects important for obtaining linear polyurethanes. General kinetics of the process and its experimental verification, using GPC chromatography as well as NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-ToF spectrometry, are presented. Accompanied by over 400 references, the author presents synthesis methods, physicochemical properties of linear polyurethanes (analyzed with DCS, TG, DMTA, Rtg, AFM microscopy methods) as semiproducts for foams, elastomers, lacquers and coatings. Research results concerning free surface energy of the polyurethane coatings are also presented. Special attention is given to the latest polyurethane applications, such as ecological waterborne dispersions, biodegradation resistant elastomers and coatings used as medical implants and binders for ceramic powder materials. Moreover, the book contains information on urethane-isocyanate prepolymers applications, which are potential semifinished products for elastomers, foams, coatings, adhesives and interpenetrating polymer network composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers have achieved an enviable position as the class of materials having the highest volume of production, exceeding that of both metals and ceramics. The meteoric rise in the production and utilization of polymers has been due to advances in polymer synthesis which allow the creation of specific and well-defined molecular structures, to new knowledge concerning the relationships between polymer structure and properties, and to an improved understanding of how processing can be used as a tool to develop morphological features which result in desired properties. Polymers have truly become 'engineered materials' in every sense of the term. Polymer scientists and engineers are forever seeking to modify and improve the properties of synthetic polymeric systems for use in specific applications. Towards this end they have often looked to nature for advice on how to design molecules for specific needs. An excellent illustration of this is the use of noncovalent bonding (ionic, hydrogen, and van der Waals) in lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, where these noncovalent bonds, acting both intra and intermolecularly, precisely control the structure and thus the function of the entire system. The utilization of ionic bonding, in particular in man-made polymers has attracted widespread interest in recent years, since ionic interactions exert a similar strong influence on the structure and properties of these synthetic systems.

Book excerpt: Adaptive polymers include those which are responsive to different stimuli — namely physical, mechanical, chemical and biological — with controlled and/or predicable behavior. Many technological breakthroughs and scientific advances have been made in the last few decades and this volume aims to cover the most up-to-date studies and achievements in some adaptive polymers, in terms of principles of adaptiveness, properties, structure design and characterization with an emphasis on their applications, particularly in textiles, skin care, medicine and other related areas. Some versatile functional polymers, such as Chitosan, cylodextrin and dendrimer, and hyper-branched polymers are also introduced in order to provide a source for people in different professions when searching for knowledge and inspiration in the field of adaptive and functional polymers. One of the key features of this book is the fact that it is multi-disciplinary in nature, and so accessible to a wide variety of readers.

Book excerpt: The best papers from the three-day conference on Safe Drinking Water from Source to Tap June 2009 in Maastricht are published in this book covering the themes of challenges of the water sector and adaptive strategies, treatment, distribution, risk assessment and risk management, sensors and monitoring, small scale systems, simulation, alternative water supply & sources, consumer involvement, and future drinking water. Worldwide, the water supply sector is facing tremendous challenges. Every new emerging contaminants and pathogens and aging infrastructures that are vulnerable for deliberate contamination pose a threat to the quality of water supplies. Shortage of good quality and readily treatable resources is increasing due to global warming, urbanisation and pollution from agriculture and industry. Regulators and consumers are becoming more demanding. Techneau - the largest European project on drinking water - addresses these challenges by developing adaptive supply system options and new and improved treatment and monitoring technologies. Future system options to be studied are flexible, small scale and multi-source supplies, utilising non conventional resources like brackish ground water, treated wastewater and urban groundwater.
