Book excerpt: Conferences on technical and engineering ceramics are held with increasing frequency, having become fashionable because the potential of ceramics in profitable growth industries is an urgent matter of considerable debate and discussion. Japanese predictions are that the market value of ceramics will grow 10 at about 10% per annum to reach at least $10 by the end of the century. Seventy per cent of this market will be in electroceramics, applications for which include insulating substrates in integrated circuits, ferroelectric capacitors, piezoelectric oscillators and transdu cers, ferrite magnets, and ion-conducting solid electrolytes and sen sors. All these are oxides, and so are excluded by the title of the Limerick Conference. Why 'Non-oxide'? The other major ceramics potential is in struc tural engineering components and engine applications. Here, the greatest impetus to research and development has been the attempt to produce a ceramic gas turbine. Heat engines become more efficient as their working temperature increases, but nickel-base superalloy en gines have about reached their limit. Compared with metals, ceramics have higher strengths at high temperatures, better oxidation and corrosion resistance, and are also less dense. In general, ceramics have better properties above about 1000°C except in one respect-their inherent brittleness. The work of fracture is therefore much smaller than for metals and so the permitted flaw size is also smaller.

Book excerpt: Examines the latest processing and fabrication methods There is increasing interest in the application of advanced ceramic materials in diverse areas such as transportation, energy, environmental protection and remediation, communications, health, and aerospace. This book guides readers through a broad selection of key processing techniques for ceramics and their composites, enabling them to manufacture ceramic products and components with the properties needed for various industrial applications. With chapters contributed by internationally recognized experts in the field of ceramics, the book includes traditional fabrication routes as well as new and emerging approaches in order to meet the increasing demand for more reliable ceramic materials. Ceramics and Composites Processing Methods is divided into three sections: Densification, covering the fundamentals and practice of sintering, pulsed electric current sintering, and viscous phase silicate processing Chemical Methods, examining colloidal methods, sol-gel, gel casting, polymer processing, chemical vapor deposition, chemical vapor infiltration, reactive melt infiltration, and combustion synthesis Physical Methods, including directional solidification, solid free-form fabrication, microwave processing, electrophoretic deposition, and plasma spraying Each chapter focuses on a particular processing method or approach. Collectively, these chapters offer readers comprehensive, state-of-the-science information on the many approaches, techniques, and methods for the processing and fabrication of advanced ceramics and ceramic composites. With its coverage of the latest processing methods, Ceramics and Composites Processing Methods is recommended for researchers and students in ceramics, materials science, structural materials, biomedical engineering, and nanotechnology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ceramics have been known to mankind literally for millennia, research has never ceased. Apart from the classic uses as a bulk material in pottery, construction, and decoration, the latter half of the twentieth century saw an explosive growth of application fields, such as electrical and thermal insulators, wear-resistant bearings, surface coatings, lightweight armour, or aerospace materials. In addition to plain, hard solids, modern ceramics come in many new guises such as fabrics, ultrathin films, microstructures and hybrid composites. Built on the solid foundations laid down by the 20-volume series Materials Science and Technology, Ceramics Science and Technology picks out this exciting material class and illuminates it from all sides. Materials scientists, engineers, chemists, biochemists, physicists and medical researchers alike will find this work a treasure trove for a wide range of ceramics knowledge from theory and fundamentals to practical approaches and problem solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered by Edward G. Acheson about 1890, silicon carbide is one of the oldest materials and also a new material. It occurs naturally in meteorites, but in very small amounts and is not in a useable state as an industrial material. For industrial require ments, large amounts of silicon carbide must be synthesized by solid state reactions at high temperatures. Silicon carbide has been used for grinding and as an abrasive material since its discovery. During World War II, silicon carbide was used as a heating element; however, it was difficult to obtain high density sintered silicon carbide bodies. In 1974, S. Prochazka reported that the addition of small amounts of boron compounds and carbide were effective in the sintering process to obtain high density. It was then possible to produce high density sintered bodies by pressureless sintering methods in ordinary atmosphere. Since this development, silicon carbide has received great attention as one of the high temperature structural ceramic materials. Since the 1970s, many research papers have appeared which report studies of silicon carbide and silicon nitride for structural ceramics.

Book excerpt: This book explores how social trust impacts the Chinese economy. Due to the profound social changes brought by rapid urbanization, China's traditional social trust system gradually weakens. How to rebuild and enhance social credit remains as a key and difficult project. Exploring case studies from the real estate market, private banking, and urban financing, this book explores the value of informal social links to the economic functions of a society and how to rebuild them when they erode. This is of interest to scholars of China's economy and society.
