Book excerpt: Unlike the many magazines that revolve around the architectural world, Ardeth concerns neither with outcomes (architecture) nor with the authors (architects). Ardeth concerns instead with their operational work, i.e. projects. The shift from subjects (their good intentions, as taught in Universities and reclaimed in the profession) to objects (the products of design, at work within the social system that contains them) engenders an analytical and falsifiable elaboration of the complex mechanisms that an open practice such as design involves. Through a process of disciplinary redefinition, Ardeth explores the falsifiability of design hypotheses as the object that allows the project to scientifically confront errors and approximations.

Book Synopsis Regionalism and Modernity by : Leen Meganck
Download or read book Regionalism and Modernity written by Leen Meganck and published by Universitaire Pers Leuven. This book was released on 2013 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex and shifting relation between regionalism and modernity With its search for purity, honesty, modesty, and ‘fitness of purpose', the late 19th and early 20th century concept of architectural regionalism is seminal to the modern movement. In later historiography, however, regionalism in Europe was neglected and even labeled ‘backward'. The origins of this drastic change of perception can be traced to the 1930s, when regionalism as a positive form gradually turned into a ‘closed' form of regionalism, a folding back on one's own region as a defence mechanism in an economically and politically turbulent decade.
Book Synopsis Architecture Form(s) Identity by : Greta Allegretti
Download or read book Architecture Form(s) Identity written by Greta Allegretti and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture form(s) identity. Spaces for the absence of memory is a collection of essays on the theme of memory, its possible loss, weakness, ability to build individual and collective identities, and on the way architecture inserts itself in this process, determining different spaces of reflection. These texts all arise from a common research ground, which saw the editors personally involved in an inter-doctoral Workshop (The Memory as Construction of the Subject. Designing for the Absence of Memory, 2018-19), with a collaboration between Politecnico di Milano (AUID) and the Universidad de Sevilla (HAC) Ph.D. schools, in which the theme of memory and the construction of a more holistic space that dialogues with it was at the center of the design reflection. These contributions, all built around that very rich relationship between memory and architecture, have led to a necessary desire to broaden the horizons and thematic limits reached by the workshop, considering them as a starting point for the collection of different perspectives able to investigate some issues in a more specific way.
Book Synopsis Writing Architecture in Modern Italy by : Daria Ricchi
Download or read book Writing Architecture in Modern Italy written by Daria Ricchi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Architecture in Modern Italy tells the history of an intellectual group connected to the small but influential Italian Einaudi publishing house between the 1930s and the 1950s. It concentrates on a diverse group of individuals, including Bruno Zevi, an architectural historian and politician; Giulio Carlo Argan, an art historian; Italo Calvino, a fiction writer; Giulio Einaudi, a publisher; and Elio Vittorini and Cesare Pavese, both writers and translators. Linking architectural history and historiography within a broader history of ideas, this book proposes four different methods of writing history, defining historiographical genres, modes, and tones of writing that can be applied to history writing to analyze political and social moments in time. It identifies four writing genres: myths, chronicles, history, and fiction, which became accepted as forms of multiple postmodern historical stories after 1957. An important contribution to the architectural debate, Writing Architecture in Modern Italy will appeal to those interested in the history of architecture, history of ideas, and architectural education.

This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, With(out) Trace: Inter-Disciplinary Investigations into Time, Space and the Body, unpacks many of the issues that surround the idea of trace: what we intentionally, an unintentionally, leave behind as well as how trace can help us to move forward. In particular this volume looks at how interdisciplinarity can suggest new ways of seeing and, subsequently, exploring interconnections between time, space and the body.
Book Synopsis Digital Draw Connections by : Fabio Bianconi
Download or read book Digital Draw Connections written by Fabio Bianconi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from the seminal work of Robert Venturi and aims at re-projecting it in the current cultural debate by extending it to the scale of landscape and placing it in connection with representative issues. It brings out the transdisciplinary synthesis of a necessarily interdisciplinary approach to the theme, aimed at creating new models which are able to represent the complexity of a contradictory reality and to redefine the centrality of human dimension. As such, the volume gathers multiple experiences developed in different geographical areas, which come into connection with the role of representation. Composed of 43 chapters written by 81 authors from around the world, with an introduction by Jim Venturi and Cezar Nicolescu, the volume is divided into two parts, the first one more theoretical and the other one which showcases real-world applications, although there is never a total split between criticism and operational experimentation of research.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Urbanization by : Mustafa Ergen
Download or read book Sustainable Urbanization written by Mustafa Ergen and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid urbanization that began with industrialization has begun to cause many problems. New approaches are emerging today to minimize these problems and make urban areas more livable. These problems include insufficient social facilities in urban areas for increasing populations due to migration and unbalanced use of green areas, water, and energy resources due to urbanization. Careless consumption and the pollution of natural resources will cause people many more problems in the future than they do today in urban development. Many professional disciplines have noticed this unbalanced development in urban areas. Urban areas have larger populations than rural areas today. Urban areas are developed neglectfully. Sustainability is needed as a criterion for urban areas to develop in a more livable and healthy fashion. Sustainable urban development approaches are seen in many fields, ranging from land use to the use of natural resources in urban areas.

Book Synopsis Not Ever Absent: Storytelling in Arts, Culture and Identity Formation by :
Download or read book Not Ever Absent: Storytelling in Arts, Culture and Identity Formation written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2015. Storytelling has always played a central role in the formation of cultures and communities. All cultures define themselves and their place in the world through their stories. Similarly, our identities are largely constructed as narratives, and it is with the aid of storytelling that we manage to conceive of ourselves – our selves – as meaningful wholes. Thus, storytelling is not ever absent: it is to be found in literature, social life, in the places we visit and the buildings we live in. This volume presents storytelling in various appearances: from ancient myths and oral history, to transmedia narratives and digital stories. Different forms of narrative are analysed, as is the use of storytelling as a method for e.g. counselling, education and research. Throughout twenty-five chapters, a compelling overview of recent research on the topic is provided, both stressing the omnipresence of storytelling and exploring what storytelling is and isn’t.
Book Synopsis (Re)Discovering Proximity by : Marika Fior
Download or read book (Re)Discovering Proximity written by Marika Fior and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the topic of proximity and its relations in the design of contemporary urban fabrics and public spaces. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and reflections on the future of cities have lately shed light on the concept of proximity, which is intended as the relationship between communities and urban functions and as relations among people, built spaces, and open spaces. The proximity is a historic and fertile field of interest for American and Northern European urban studies; it is a spatial and social program seemingly surpassed by the styles and rhythms of contemporary city life, but today it is back in vogue with different purposes. Meanwhile, the action research developed by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano for the Municipality of Milan reached its conclusion (2018–2020). The research work focused on contextualizing the new M4 Metro line stations under construction, and jointed mobility flows and places, long-range networks and local ones, boosting the idea of metro stations as regenerative urban thresholds and urban platforms for enabling environmental, sustainable settlement, and active mobility systems. In other words, the action research for Milan shows how to achieve the concept of proximity in the urban design practice in a dense, stratified, and complex urban context.
Book Synopsis Confronting the Machine by : Boris Magrini
Download or read book Confronting the Machine written by Boris Magrini and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artists who work with new media generally adopt a critical media approach in contrast to artists who work with traditional art media. Where does the difference lie between media artists and artists who produce modern art? Which key art objects illustrate this trend? The author investigates the relationship between art and technology on the basis of work produced by Edward Ihnatowicz and Harald Cohen, and on the basis of the pioneering computer art exhibition at Dokumenta X in 1997. His line of argument counters the generally held view that computer art straddles the gap between art and technology. Instead, he is seeking a genuine interpretation of the origin of media art, and to develop new perspectives for it.
Book Synopsis L'idea costruita by : Alberto Campo Baeza
Download or read book L'idea costruita written by Alberto Campo Baeza and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
