Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenya is one of the most politically dynamic and influential countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, it is known in equal measure as a country that has experienced great highs and tragic lows. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kenya was seen as a ''success story" of development in the periphery, and also led the way in terms of democratic breakthroughs in 2010 when a new constitution devolved power and placed new constraints on the president. However, the country has also made international headlines for the kind of political instability that occurs when electoral violence is expressed along ethnic lines, such as during the "Kenya crisis" of 2007/08 when over 1,000 people lost their lives and almost 700,000 were displaced. The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics explains these developments and many more, drawing together 50 specially commissioned chapters by leading researchers. The chapters they have contributed address a range of essential topics including the legacy of colonial rule, ethnicity, land politics, devolution, the constitution, elections, democracy, foreign aid, the informal economy, civil society, human rights, the International Criminal Court, the growing influence of China, economic policy, electoral violence, and the impact of mobile phone technology. In addition to covering some of the most important debates about Kenyan politics, the volume provides an insightful overview of Kenyan history from 1930 to the present day and features a set of chapters that review the impact of devolution on regional politics in every part of the country.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on a range of geospatial applications for environmental health research, including environmental justice issues, environmental health disparities, air and water contamination, and infectious diseases. Environmental health research is at an exciting point in its use of geotechnologies, and many researchers are working on innovative approaches. This book is a timely scholarly contribution in updating the key concepts and applications of using GIS and other geospatial methods for environmental health research. Each chapter contains original research which utilizes a geotechnical tool (Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, GPS, etc.) to address an environmental health problem. The book is divided into three sections organized around the following themes: issues in GIS and environmental health research; using GIS to assess environmental health impacts; and geospatial methods for environmental health. Representing diverse case studies and geospatial methods, the book is likely to be of interest to researchers, practitioners and students across the geographic and environmental health sciences. The authors are leading researchers and practitioners in the field of GIS and environmental health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and empirical analyses of whether open innovations in international development instrumentally advantages poor and marginalized populations. Over the last ten years, "open" innovations--the sharing of information without access restrictions or cost--have emerged within international development. But do these practices instrumentally advantage poor and marginalized populations? This book examines whether, for whom, and under what circumstances the free, networked, public sharing of information and communication resources contributes (or not) towards a process of positive social transformation. The contributors offer both theoretical and empirical analyses that cover a broad range of applications, emphasizing the underlying aspects of open innovations that are shared across contexts and domains.

Book Synopsis An Evolutionary and Sustainability Perspective on Public Space in Nairobi by : Teckla Muhoro
Download or read book An Evolutionary and Sustainability Perspective on Public Space in Nairobi written by Teckla Muhoro and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public open spaces play a significant role in the life, form, and experience of cities. The growth of towns and cities results in greater urbanization within countries. Urban growth means increased numbers of people in cities who require access to social amenities. These social amenities include public open spaces in cities such as Nairobi, Kenya. In Nairobi’s case, multiple public open spaces in its Central Business District (CBD) are under-utilized, and do not fully perform their role as publicly accessible areas for commerce, transportation, transit, and recreation. There is, therefore, a dichotomy comprising an increased demand for public open spaces on one hand and a non-optimal use of such existing spaces on the other. Through an analysis of the spatial evolution of public open spaces and components of sustainability, this book establishes factors that contribute to spaces that are better utilized and more suitable for their users. It employs a systematic, comparative analysis of spatial changes in Nairobi’s CBD. Through comprehensive data, it provides information on the shifts in sustainability of the city’s public open spaces over time. For Nairobi, the connection between spatial evolution and sustainability regarding its public open spaces has required greater evidence-based articulation. This book, therefore, serves to fill a knowledge gap through its investigation of urban spatial elements as they relate to social, economic, environmental, and governance aspects of sustainability. By presenting statistical models of sustainability, it also highlights the drivers of sustainability of public open spaces in the CBD.
