Book excerpt: Tallgrass prairie streams and their fauna are understudied, due in part to their rarity. The composition of prairie stream communities differs geographically due to regionally and locally determined environmental characteristics and varies over time due to disturbance events. This research focused on expanding the current knowledge of temporal and spatial variation in the macroinvertebrate communities of Missouri prairie streams. Intra-seasonal variation in the macroinvertebrate community of one prairie stream was correlated with changes in the stream environment and resulted in three relatively short-lived but significant community groupings. These intra-seasonal community shifts also affected functional feeding group structure and led to significant differences in biomonitoring measures over the course of weeks. For situations in which small, dynamic stream systems need to be monitored, sampling should be conducted at frequent intervals to capture changes in communities that may occur within seasons. The regional diversity and community structure of prairie headwater stream communities is in part driven by both the intermittent nature and the relative scarcity of prairie stream habitat. The macroinvertebrate communities of the headwater networks from five prairies in Missouri were unique. Differences in their taxonomic composition led to differences in biomonitoring metric values. The distinct community compositions of the headwater prairie streams studied and the high regional diversity documented are likely driven by geographic isolation rather than local environmental factors. Each of these prairie stream systems is an important contributor to species diversity at a regional level. Conservation and restoration efforts must work to preserve the biotic diversity in prairie streams to support existing macroinvertebrate communities that remain. For lotic insects to maintain stable populations across fragmented prairie patches and their intermittent streams in Missouri, dispersal must occur between patches to enable recolonization of streams after disturbance. Leptophlebia konza Burian was thought to be restricted to its type locality of Konza Prairie, Kansas; however, a population was discovered at Hi Lonesome Prairie in Missouri during an extensive search of 54 prairies. DNA sequence data from cytochrome oxidase subunit 1, CO1, show that both populations of L. konza lost genetic diversity during a recent bottleneck, either because of habitat fragmentation or competition from other species, including Leptophlebia johnsoni McDunnough. The rarity of L. konza populations across Missouri when taken into consideration with DNA sequence data suggest that L. konza populations are unstable and unable to disperse between remaining prairie patches. Water quality monitoring and research activities taking place in prairie streams must take into account spatial and temporal variation in both community structure and genetic diversity across these landscapes.

Book excerpt: Author's Abstract: River floodplain habitats of the Southeastern United States are sites of high biological productivity that rely on a predictable flooding event as a keystone process. This study took place in a river-floodplain area of the Altamaha River, an unimpounded large-order river in the Coastal Plains region of the US. This study aims to investigate how aquatic macroinvertebrate communities changed over the course of the annual flood pulse. I predicted that the communities would be different and that the differences would be driven by hydrology at the main stem and organic matter standing stock availability. I took quantitative samples of benthic macroinvertebrates monthly from December 2011-April 2012 and from December 2012- April 2014. Invertebrate abundance was assessed and biomass was obtained using published length-mass regressions. Year 1 (2011-2012) was characterized by severe drought. And Year 2 was characterized by a large flooding event. There was a significant difference between the communities. In year 1 the community was influenced by hydrology and high FBOM standing stocks. In year 2 the community was influenced by hydrology and low CBOM standing stocks. This study shows the importance of a flooding event in river floodplain systems and supports the idea that floodplains act as a source of organic matter to the main stem and are sites of high biological productivity especially from aquatic macroinvertebrates. As unimpounded rivers are becoming increasingly rare, it is important to understand how these systems function in both normal and abnormal (i.e., drought vs. flood) conditions.

Book excerpt: Patter and processes in macroinvertebrate communities are scale dependent, yet few studies incorporate a series of spatial scales into their research. This thesis focuses on the examination of macroinvertebrate communities at different spatial and temporal scales. Two contrasting catchments, Kilworth and Araglin were studied over a two year period to investigate how different land uses influenced macroinvertebrate communities. Within each catchment, each study stream was examined longitudinally for spatial change and within each site samples were taken seasonally over a two year period to investigate temporal variation. Lower altitudes sites in both catchments were found to be quite similar in water chemistry and in macroinvertebrate community metrics, despite differing land uses. Higher altitude sites at three of the four study streams differed substantially to all other sites in terms of macroinvertebrate community structure, lower pH and lower invertebrate density. The principal factors influencling macroinvertebrate composition were a combination of longitudinal variation, altitude and differences in land use all of which varied along the same gradient. Seasonal differences in macroinvertebrate composition were also found. Macroinvertebrate trophic structure (e.g. functional feeding groups) varied in a predictabel manner longitudinally, largely in accordance with the River Continum Concept. A secondary aim of the study was to examine the effects of disturbance on macroinvertebrate communities. Invertebrate recolonisation was studies at one stream in each catchment following two flood events. Macroinvertebrates recolonised both catchments in a similar manner following flooding at both a community and individual taxa level, although similarity between catchments was strongest at the lower altitude sites. Individual taxa showed a strong preference for particular recolonising strategies (i.e. opportunistic, secondary or late colonisers) irrespective of catchment, longitudinal position or year. The effect of a multiple disturbance on macroinvertebrate communities seen during the 1995 disturbance study where a second flooding event occurred. This reverted the macroinvertebrate communities to their initial disturbed state. Lower altitude sites appeared to be more affected by the multiple disturbance and this may be due to the higher shear stress and the greater unpredicitability of floods at lower altitude sites.

Book excerpt: The assessment of the ecological integrity of running waters is a prerequisite to an understanding of the effects of human alterations. The evaluation of degradation processes provides key information on how to avoid further negative impacts. The success of future conservation, mitigation and restoration activities will rely on sound assessment methodologies and their ecological relevance and applicability. Assessment methodologies are therefore an integral part of sustainable river management. This book synthesizes and discusses state-of-the-art experiences in assessment methodologies. Including the latest knowledge on structures, processes and functions of running waters as a fundamental basis for developing adequate assessment methods, the book focuses on method development, application, and in particular on integrated assessment methods. This book is directed at scientists and managers with the aim of more effective preservation, restoration and maintenance of the ecological integrity of running water ecosystems.

They provide water for diverse human uses and ecosystems. Growing water demands as well as climate change will lead to ever-increasing pressure on mountain waters. Overcoming water-use conflicts and maintaining the ecological functioning of mountain waters presents a highly challenging task and is indispensable for sustainable development. This book extensively portrays the highly diverse attributes of mountain waters and demonstrates their paramount importance for ecological and societal development. The extensive summaries on the scientific basics of mountain waters are supplemented with considerations on the diverse water uses, needs for management actions, and challenges regarding sustainable water management. This overview concerns not only the mountain areas themselves but also downriver reaches and their surrounding lowlands, and, therefore, the relationship between mountain and lowland water issues.
