Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SPEAK SOME SPANISH is ideal for an informal class or for self-study. It provides a solid grammatical foundation within a useful context, extensive vocabulary, much presented in a unique way, and avenues for developing communication skills. While grammar is explained throughout, the book is designed around communication needs, language usage, useful topics, such as greetings, coping in a conversation, weather, telling time, directions, descriptions, and ways to speak of past, present, and future actions. Verbs, often a source of dismay for language learners, are presented in a unique way. Their mastery is made much simpler; no longer is there the challenge or tedium of memorizing conjugations. Following the regular chapters are nine EXTRA sections covering verb charts for and additional uses of the present subjunctive as well as other important verb forms, tenses, and their uses that are not covered in the chapters: commands; the two simple past tenses - the imperfect (indicative) and the preterite - their forms, their uses, and their use together; and the future (indicative.) These sections are for reference for anyone wishing to expand the SOME of the book title, SPEAK SOME SPANISH. The book concludes with present indicative verb charts and vocabularies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgetting about Spain’s civil war (1936–9) and subsequent dictatorship was long seen as a necessary safeguard for the democracy that emerged after General Francisco Franco’s death in 1975. Since the early 2000s, however, public discussion of historical memory has awakened efforts to remember this past through the personal testimonies of Spaniards who experienced it firsthand. Untold Stories expands accounts of twentieth-century Spain by presenting an ethnography of an ignored population: the impoverished men and women who fled Franco’s dictatorship in the 1960s, participating in a wave of labour migration to northern Europe. Now in their eighties, they were born around the time of the civil war and came of age during its repressive aftermath before leaving Spain as young adults. The book features a community of such Spaniards, who gather regularly at a senior centre on the outskirts of Paris. Drawing on concepts from linguistic anthropology, David Divita analyses conversational encounters recorded among the seniors to demonstrate how a turbulent past shapes mundane moments of social interaction in the present. Documenting what is said as well as what is not, Divita reveals through detailed textual analysis how silence can pervade the creation of social meanings – such as belonging, authority, and legitimacy. Untold Stories illuminates the impact of a harrowing historical period on some of Spain’s most marginal citizens in the early years of the dictatorship.

Praise for Weed Mom “An excellent compendium of cannabis information. If you're curious about how cannabis might fit into your life as a parent, Weed Mom has the answers for you . . . Timely, fun, and educational. It makes a great conversation starter for moms, dads, and anyone else who loves the healing herb!” —Mary Jane Gibson, journalist, actress & host at Weed+Grub “Brand is refreshingly frank about sticky topics like overuse, how to talk to kids about cannabis, and what to do when things go wrong. She also includes an incredibly useful buying guide for those (like me) who feel overwhelmed by the dizzying array of specialized products on the market today.” —Alia Volz, author of Home Baked: My Mom, Marijuana, and the Stoning of San Francisco “Just how Brand becomes one of weed’s most knowledgeable and ardent crusaders is a story you’ll have to follow in the book, but that she’s been to hell and back—with cannabis riding shotgun—makes her wisdom all the more hard-won and reliable. This is an honest, unapologetic book for real women.” —Melinda Misuraca, Project CBD

In this learner-centered introductory program, the authors’ commitment to a methodology based on true-to-life experiences brings Spanish to life. Pura vida is the discovery of a Spanish-speaking world through the experiences of real people who share anecdotes and reflections on those experiences. Students relate to these people and make deeper, more meaningful connections between language and culture, and acquire Spanish with an unparalleled sense of personal engagement. In this 12-chapter introductory program, students don’t only learn Spanish for real life, but also from real life. They discover that there is not just one homogeneous Hispanic culture, but rather that each Spanish-speaking country has its own rich, unique culture and that the people who live in these countries speak one common language with different accents, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies. The program offers truly seamless integration of cultural notions and language instruction and features 100% contextualized and personalized activities.

Book excerpt: What if a brachiosaurus needed braces? If a tyrannosaurus used toothpaste, would it squash the tube? A young child on the way to a dental checkup wonders if dinosaurs ever had cavities and if they had to brush their teeth, floss, get braces, and use fluoride or mouthwash. This whimsical picture book includes eleven common terms related to dental and oral health, along with a glossary of name pronunciations and fun, scientific facts about each of the eleven dinosaurs mentioned in the story. It takes an imaginative, humorous look at dinosaurs' dental health and eases children's fears about going to the dentist, while cleverly encouraging them to take care of their own teeth.
