This book was released on 1963 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experimental study was carried out at a free-stream Mach number of 0.6 and a Reynolds number per foot of 3.45 x 106. The magnitudes of the wall-pressure fluctuations agree with the Lilley-Hodgson theoretical results. Space-time correlations of the wall-pressure fluctuations generally agree with Willmarth's results for longitudinal separation distances. The convection velocity of the fluctuations is found to increase with increasing separation distances, and its significance is explained. Measurements with the longitudinal component of the velocity fluctuations indicate that the contributions to the wall-pressure fluctuations are from two regions, an inner region near the wall and an outer region linked with the intermittency.

This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A database obtained from direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow is analyzed to extract the propagation velocity V of velocity, vorticity, and pressure fluctuations from their space-time correlations. A surprising result is that V is approximately the same as the local mean velocity for most of the channel, except for the near-wall region. For y(+) is less than or equal to 15, V is virtually constant, implying that perturbations of all flow variables propagate like waves near the wall. In this region V is 55 percent of the centerline velocity U(sub c) for velocity and vorticity perturbations and 75 percent of U(sub c) for pressure perturbations. Scale-dependence of V is also examined by analyzing the bandpass filtered flow fields. Comprehensive documentation of the propagation velocities and space-time correlation data, which should prove useful in the evaluation of Taylor's hypothesis is presented. An attempt was made to explain some of the data in terms of our current understanding of organized structures, although not all of the data can be explained this way. Book Synopsis Non-perturbative Renormalization Group Approach to Some Out-of-Equilibrium Systems by : Malo Tarpin

This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the application of non-perturbative, or functional, renormalization group to study the physics of critical stationary states in systems out-of-equilibrium. Two different systems are thereby studied. The first system is the diffusive epidemic process, a stochastic process which models the propagation of an epidemic within a population. This model exhibits a phase transition peculiar to out-of-equilibrium, between a stationary state where the epidemic is extinct and one where it survives. The present study helps to clarify subtle issues about the underlying symmetries of this process and the possible universality classes of its phase transition. The second system is fully developed homogeneous isotropic and incompressible turbulence. The stationary state of this driven-dissipative system shows an energy cascade whose phenomenology is complex, with partial scale-invariance, intertwined with what is called intermittency. In this work, analytical expressions for the space-time dependence of multi-point correlation functions of the turbulent state in 2- and 3-D are derived. This result is noteworthy in that it does not rely on phenomenological input except from the Navier-Stokes equation and that it becomes exact in the physically relevant limit of large wave-numbers. The obtained correlation functions show how scale invariance is broken in a subtle way, related to intermittency corrections.
Book Synopsis Random Functions and Turbulence by : S. Panchev
Download or read book Random Functions and Turbulence written by S. Panchev and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Natural Philosophy, Volume 32: Random Functions and Turbulence focuses on the use of random functions as mathematical methods. The manuscript first offers information on the elements of the theory of random functions. Topics include determination of statistical moments by characteristic functions; functional transformations of random variables; multidimensional random variables with spherical symmetry; and random variables and distribution functions. The book then discusses random processes and random fields, including stationarity and ergodicity of random processes; influence of finiteness of the interval of averaging; scalar and vector random fields; and statistical moments. The text takes a look at the statistical theory of turbulence. Topics include turbulence with very large Reynolds numbers; emergence of turbulent motion; and energy spectrum in isothermal turbulent shear flow. The book also discusses small-scale and large-scale atmospheric turbulence and applications to numerical weather analysis and prediction. The manuscript is a vital source of data for readers interested in random theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ready access to computers at an institutional and personal level has defined a new era in teaching and learning. The opportunity to extend the subject matter of traditional science and engineering disciplines into the realm of scientific computing has become not only desirable, but also necessary. Thanks to port ability and low overhead and operating costs, experimentation by numerical simulation has become a viable substitute, and occasionally the only alternative, to physical experiment at ion. The new environment has motivated the writing of texts and mono graphs with a modern perspective that incorporates numerical and com puter programming aspects as an integral part of the curriculum: meth ods, concepts, and ideas should be presented in a unified fashion that motivates and underlines the urgency of the new elements, but does not compromise the rigor of the classical approach and does not oversimplify. Interfacing fundamental concepts and practical methods of scientific computing can be done on different levels. In one approach, theory and implement at ion are kept complementary and presented in a sequential fashion. In a second approach, the coupling involves deriving compu tational methods and simulation algorithms, and translating equations into computer code instructions immediately following problem formu lations. The author of this book is a proponent of the second approach and advocates its adoption as a means of enhancing learning: interject ing methods of scientific computing into the traditional discourse offers a powerful venue for developing analytical skills and obtaining physical insight.

Book excerpt: The Second European Turbulence Conference was held at the Technische Univer sitat Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany, from August 30th to September 2nd 1988 under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee. It was primar ily devoted to fundamental aspects of turbulence, and aimed at bringing together engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. The scientific committee - serving also as Sub-committee of the European Turbulence Conference - consisted of the following members: G. Comte-Bellot (Lyon), H.-H. Fernholz and H.E. Fiedler (both from Berlin) as co-chairmen of the conference, U. Frisch (Nice), J.C.R. Hunt (Cambridge), E. Krause (Aachen), M. Landahl (Stockholm), A.M. Obukhov (Moscow), and G. Ooms (Amsterdam). The conference programme comprised 6 invited lectures and 94 contributions, presented either orally or at poster sessions. There were 165 participants from 18 countries. All papers published in these conference proceedings were, with the exception of the invited ones, again refereed by the members of the scientific committee. The main research topics discussed at this meeting were stability and gener ation of turbulence, effects of rotation, stratification and buoyancy forces, novel instrumentation, manipulation and control, boundary layers with separation and reattachment, computer simulation, turbulent diffusion, image analysis and flow visualization, vorticity dynamics and turbulence, and large-scale structures. We have taken the liberty of regrouping some papers following the submitted final versions for this volume. Authors may therefore find their paper under a different heading from that in the conference programme.

Download or read book Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 2 written by William K. Blake and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 2: Complex Flow-Structure Interactions, Second Edition, enables readers to fully understand flow-induced vibration and sound, unifying the disciplines of fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, vibration, acoustics, and statistics in order to classify and examine each of the leading sources of vibration and sound induced by various types of fluid motion. Starting from classical theories of aeroacoustics and hydroacoustics, a formalism of integral solutions valid for sources near boundaries is developed and then broadened to address different source types, including hydrodynamically induced cavitation and bubble noise, turbulent wall-pressure fluctuations, pipe and duct systems, lifting surface flow noise and vibration, and noise from rotating machinery. Each chapter is illustrated with comparisons of leading formulas and measured data. Combined with its companion book, Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 1: General Concepts and Elementary Sources, the book covers everything an engineer needs to understand flow-induced sound and vibration. This book will be a vital source of information for postgraduate students, engineers and researchers with an interest in aerospace, ships and submarines, offshore structures, construction, and ventilation. Presents every important topic in flow-induced sound and vibration Covers all aspects of the topics addressed, from fundamental theory, to the analytical formulas used in practice Provides the building blocks of computer modeling for flow-induced sound and vibration
