Oder neigen Menschen oft nur den Mangel zu sehen und die positiven Aspekte und Entwicklungen zu übersehen? Was ist ein Sozialstaat und was versteht man unter Sozialpolitik? Zuerst wird die Autorin einführend auf diese Fragen eingehen. Folgend erforscht sie die Funktionen der Sozialpolitik, um dann auf das Verteilungsproblem der Politik einzugehen. Kurz möchte sie auf die historische Entwicklung eingehen, um dazu die Verbindung zu den Prinzipien herzustellen. Dabei ist es der Autorin unmöglich, in die Tiefe der historischen Entwicklung einzugehen, sondern nur einen kurzen Einblick in die Ursprünge zu schaffen. Damit bewusst wird, wie die sozialen Strukturen und Entwicklungen die Sozialpolitik prägen, und welche Auslöser dazu beitragen, dass sich manche Gesetze ändern müssen. Danach folgt eine Definition dieser Prinzipien. Die Prinzipien werden auf die staatliche Verfasstheit in Deutschland im Jahr 2017 angewendet, anhand von frei gewählten Beispielen, um abschließend herauszufinden, welches Prinzip in diesem Jahr anhand des Beispiels mehr im Vordergrund stand.

So ist Deutschland nach Artikel 20 Abs. 1 Grundgesetz ein demokratischer und sozialer Bundesstaat und nach Artikel 28 Grundgesetz ein “...sozialer Rechtsstaat”. Doch welche Bedeutung hat diese vorgeschriebene Sozialstaatlichkeit und welche Rolle spielt die Sozialpolitik hierbei? Wie hat sich der Sozialstaat vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute entwickelt? Welche Prinzipien spielten und spielen eine große Rolle bei der Ausgestaltung des Sozialstaates? Wie werden diese Prinzipien in der Praxis angewandt? Diesen Fragen werde ich in meiner Ausarbeitung nachgehen. Hierzu wird einführend der Sozialstaat und die Rolle der Sozialpolitik als Instrument der Ausgestaltung definiert. Anschließend betrachte ich die historische Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland als Sozialstaat, hierbei geht es vor allem um die Frage, ob der Sozialstaat aus einem reinen Fürsorgegedanken gegenüber der Bevölkerung entstanden ist bzw. welcher historische Umstand zu dieser Entwicklung geführt hat. Soziale Gerechtigkeit als Hauptziel der Sozialpolitik wird anschließend näher erläutert und darauf aufbauend werden die drei wichtigsten Prinzipien der Sozialpolitik das Solidaritätsprinzip, das Subsidiaritätsprinzip und das Selbstverantwortungsprinzip vorgestellt und erörtert. Diese drei Prinzipien beeinflussen sich wechselseitig, sind voneinander abhängig und dem Hauptziel der Sozialen Gerechtigkeit zuträglich. Somit wird es auch Thema meiner Ausarbeitung sein, warum sich diese drei Prinzipien gegenseitig bedingen und wechselseitig beeinflussen. Abschließend werde ich am Beispiel der Agenda 2010, die bisher einschneidendste Änderung der modernen Sozialpolitik, genauer gesagt die Leistungen zur Sicherung des Lebensunterhaltes nach dem SGB II (Arbeitslosengeld II) auf die Einhaltung der Prinzipien (Subsidiarität, Solidarität und Selbstverantwortung) untersuchen. Hierbei wird das Augenmerk vor allem darauf liegen, welche Prinzipien hierbei im Vordergrund stehen und warum das Hauptziel der Sozialen Gerechtigkeit gerade unter der Agenda 2010 gelitten hat. Den Schluss bildet ein Fazit in dem die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse nochmals kurz und übersichtlich zusammengefasst werden.

Since then the book has gone through five more editions and has been translated into Spanish and Italian. The present English translation is based on the sixth German edition. The author was Professor of Economics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Professor Eucken was a student at a time when the Historical School dominated the teaching of econo mics at the German universities. Although, at the beginning of his career, he did some work along the lines of the Historical School, neither the ~ims nor the methods of historical research the field of economics as practised by the representatives in of the Historical School satisfied him; and the fact that the members of this school were unable to explain the causes of economic events such as the German inflation after World War I was an added reason for him to turn to economic theory. He became, among German economists, the foremost opponent of the Historical School, which he criticised in several publica tions. Through his wrItings and his teaching he contributed his share to the revival of interest in economic theory which was noticeable in the 'twenties. And he was one of the few economists left in Germany who helped to keep this interest alive during the 'thirties and during World War II. During this time he published Kapitaltheoretische Untersuchungen (1936), and the present volume, which immediately gave rise to an extensive discussion in German economic journals.

The resulting book sets a standard by which historians of the period will be measured in the future.

The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? Book excerpt: Developed countries, especially in Europe, face a number of issue related to migration: social and economic disruptions caused by the declining demand for unskilled labour and resulting unemployment, a shortage of skilled labour in many professions, increasing international competition for highly qualified human capital, radical demographic changes, and the forthcoming expansion of the European Union, which will trigger further immigration into major European countries and create new market opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe. This suggests a need for a deeper knowledge of the causes and consequences of increased labour mobility. This is especially important when it is associated with tension and fears among native populations. This book brings together analyses of migration issues in major European countries, and compares evidence with more countries that have traditionally seen the most immigration. First, it studies migration streams since World War II, and reviews major migration policy regimes. Second, it summarizes the empirical evidence measuring wages, unemployment, and occupational choices. Third, it investigates how migrants affects the labour markets of their host countries, and evaluates econometric studies into the wage and employment consequences of immigration. Surprisingly, there is wide evidence that immigration is largely beneficial for receiving countries. There might be phases of adjustment, but there is no convincing evidence that natives' wages are depressed or unemployment increases as a consequence of migrant inflow. However, there is a growing impression that migration does serve less and less the needs of the labour market. This suggests a stronger focus on economic channels of immigration, for which the book provides a conceptual basis and the required empirical facts and institutional background.
