Download or read book Bauern und Banker written by Thomas Ertl and published by Verlag Herder GmbH. This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Einführung in die Wirtschaftsgeschichte by : Sebastian Steinbach
Download or read book Einführung in die Wirtschaftsgeschichte written by Sebastian Steinbach and published by Kohlhammer Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many economic developments in Europe date back to the Middle Ages & for example, the emergence of the banking and insurance systems, and cashless payments. Issues of economic history, however, are usually given little space in introductions to medieval history. This third volume of a series of introductions to economic history, spanning several time periods, closes this gap. Sebastian Steinbach not only provides a concise overview of the economics of the Middle Ages in Europe, but also discusses research issues such as the commercial revolution, publishing, and the agricultural depression of the late Middle Ages. Lively and informative, it refutes the idea that the Middle Ages represented a period of economic stagnation. With interpretations of many different sources, Steinbach also indicates the way in which insights into economic history are obtained.

Book Synopsis The Specter of Capital by : Joseph Vogl
Download or read book The Specter of Capital written by Joseph Vogl and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his brilliant interdisciplinary analysis of the global financial crisis, Joseph Vogl aims to demystify finance capitalism—with its bewildering array of new instruments—by tracing the historical stages through which the financial market achieved its current autonomy. Classical and neoclassical economic theorists have played a decisive role here. Ignoring early warnings about the instability of speculative finance markets, they have persisted in their belief in the inherent equilibrium of the market, describing even major crises as mere aberrations or adjustments and rationalizing dubious financial practices that escalate risk while seeking to manage it. "The market knows best": this is a secular version of Adam Smith's faith in the market's "invisible hand," his economic interpretation of eighteenth-century providentialist theodicy, which subsequently hardened into an "oikodicy," an unquestioning belief in the self-regulating beneficence of market forces. Vogl shows that financial theory, assisted by mathematical modeling and digital technology, itself operates as a "hidden hand," pushing economic reality into unknown territory. He challenges economic theorists to move beyond the neoclassical paradigm to discern the true contours of the current epoch of financial convulsions.
Book Synopsis German Imperial Knights by : Richard J. Ninness
Download or read book German Imperial Knights written by Richard J. Ninness and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German imperial knights were branded disobedient, criminal, or treasonous, but instead of finding themselves on the wrong side of history, they resisted marginalization and adapted through a combination of conservative and progressive strategies. The knights tried to turn the elite world on its head through their constant challenges to the princes in the realms of both culture and governance. They held their own chivalric tournaments from 1479-1487, and defied the emperor and powerful princes in refusing to obey laws that violated custom. But their resistance led to a series of disasters in the 1520s: their leaders were hunted down and their castles destroyed. Having failed on their own, they turned to Emperor Charles V in the 1540s and the imperial knighthood was formed. This new status stabilized their position and provided them with important rights, including the choice between Lutheranism and Catholicism. During the Reformation era (1517-1648), no other German group embraced diversity in religion like the imperial knights. Despite the popularity of Protestantism in the group, they stood up to their princely adversaries, now Protestant, becoming champions of the Catholic Church and proved themselves just as staunch defenders of the Church as the Habsburg and Wittelsbach dynasties.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Study of Religion by : Michael Stausberg
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Study of Religion written by Michael Stausberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Study of Religion provides a comprehensive overview of the academic study of religion. Written by an international team of leading scholars, its fifty-one chapters are divided thematically into seven sections. The first section addresses five major conceptual aspects of research on religion. Part two surveys eleven main frameworks of analysis, interpretation, and explanation of religion. Reflecting recent turns in the humanities and social sciences, part three considers eight forms of the expression of religion. Part four provides a discussion of the ways societies and religions, or religious organizations, are shaped by different forms of allocation of resources. Other chapters in this section consider law, the media, nature, medicine, politics, science, sports, and tourism. Part five reviews important developments, distinctions, and arguments for each of the selected topics. The study of religion addresses religion as a historical phenomenon and part six looks at seven historical processes. Religion is studied in various ways by many disciplines, and this Handbook shows that the study of religion is an academic discipline in its own right. The disciplinary profile of this volume is reflected in part seven, which considers the history of the discipline and its relevance. Each chapter in the Handbook references at least two different religions to provide fresh and innovative perspectives on key issues in the field. This authoritative collection will advance the state of the discipline and is an invaluable reference for students and scholars.
