Book Synopsis Practicing Hospitality by : Pat Ennis
Download or read book Practicing Hospitality written by Pat Ennis and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2008-01-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a person or a home hospitable? Does hospitality call for a beautifully decorated home and a menu filled with gourmet foods, or can it be as simple as offering a friend a cup of tea? In Practicing Hospitality two longtime professors (and practitioners!) of home economics provide both the theological base and the practical knowledge to understand and implement God's plan for hospitality. They provide a blend of theologically sound content, real-life illustrations, and practical application. They focus on developing both the Christian character and practical skills so the act of hospitality is a joy for the host and hostess and a source of encouragement for the guest. Each chapter concludes with recipes and projects that provide readers with an opportunity to personally apply the book's content. Anyone seeking to grow in their knowledge of biblical hospitality will be richly rewarded by the biblical teaching and practical suggestions in this book.
Book Synopsis Mission as Ministry of Reconciliation by : Robert L Schreiter
Download or read book Mission as Ministry of Reconciliation written by Robert L Schreiter and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mission as Ministry of Reconciliation offers a valuable elucidation of the importance mission as ministry of reconciliation. It expounds on the practical implications of this understanding in a variety of settings. It brings together perspectives from different church traditions, including the Lausanne Movement and the Catholic Church, and also speaks about the socio-ethical implications of mission. In short, this rich book affirms that there is hope--even if it is hope in a fragile world, as the concluding chapter puts it. At the very heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ is a message of hope and reconciliation. Nothing could be more relevant or necessary in a broken world, and this book centers such a message at the heart of mission.

Book excerpt: This book explores the story of the presence of the gospel in many African communities, which the author asserts, starts from the people's cultural backgrounds and contours through the patterns of the insertion of the gospel to the challenges of the new change agent to the ingredients of the Igbo worldview, culture, and religious traditions. Beginning with a discussion of church historiography, the author explores the rejection of the Euro-centric position within historiography itself and critically examines the nationalist one. He also advocates an irenic, ecumenical history that searches the memory of the people and empowers their future.--amazon.com.

Book Synopsis Theological Education in Contemporary Africa by : Grant LeMarquand
Download or read book Theological Education in Contemporary Africa written by Grant LeMarquand and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2004 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part One addresses 'Theological Foundations.' The five essays in this section deal with the Bible, Theology and Ecumenism. The subjects of theological methods, contextual hermeneutics, and appropriate curriculum are given special attention. Of course even foundational issues cannot be discussed in a vacuum and so each of the essays addresses these foundational subjects in the light of African realities. Part Two deals with 'Contemporary Issues.' It is particularly in this section that the traditional themes in African theology have been somewhat displaced by concerns which are today very pressing indeed. Three essays are devoted to the question of HIV/AIDS. This disease, which has devastated the African continent, demands a theological and practical response from those who claim to follow Jesus Christ. If the churches do not respond to this crisis with energy and determination we should not be surprised if the next generation wonders whether the Gospel has the power which we claim that it has. Two essays address the question of Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa. The resurgence of Islam in the world today is a concern of many. For those who believe in Jesus, this is a challenge which demands much wisdom and love. How should we respond to our Muslim neighbours? What are appropriate and thoughtful ways to share the love of Christ? Two further essays appear under the title of 'The Marginalized.' This could, of course, be a much large section. Those who suffer from AIDS could be included in this number, and one might have expected to see at least one essay on the place of women. In this volume, however, the 'disabled' and youth are highlighted. Both groups are clearly in need of the attention of the churches, and both groups are clearly misunderstood and neglected. The final section of Part Two contains essays, which focus attention on 'Theological Paedagogy.' All of the other contributions to this volume make suggestions and arguments about curriculum, resources, and issues of concern for theological educators. The causal aim of this book is that these essays may help us to reflect in an intentional way on the implications of contemporary realities for the future of theological education.

Book excerpt: Through insightful introductions and the judicious editing of 60 selections, Christopher Dorn's Peace in Christian Thought and Life captures the great sweep and wide divergences in the two-millennium argument of Christians among themselves over peace, war, violence, and the imperatives of the gospel. From the unyielding idealism of the early Christians to the scarred skepticism of the nuclear era, the book traces the deepening appreciation of human complexity against the perennial vision and pursuit of peace. For those who are wrestling with the complex calculus of war and peace, violence and social justice, Dorn's reader provides both historical breadth and theological depth.
